Description
The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home, 'Tis summer, the people are gay; the corn top's ripe and the meadow's in bloom, while the birds make music all the day. Lyrics and music from "My Old Kentucky Home," by Stephen Foster
The French first arrived here in the early 1700s, and like all visitors to follow, they found a fertile, fragrant land, of green hills, mountains, valleys, and mighty rivers.
In the late 1770s, settlers began to arrive for two main reasons: The Ohio River was an easy highway to navigate, but it was Daniel Boone's bravery and exploration of Kentucky, and his subsequent legend, that inspired many journeys, and brought settlers in great numbers.
Farmers were quick to benefit from the state's rich soil, and local tobacco, corn and wheat crops put it into economic overdrive.
Then came the Civil War, and boom turned to bust. After the war the Southern states couldn't afford its farm products, and the marketing of its coal and timber resources lagged across the north.
Eventually, the mining of vast coal deposits, oil and gas production, and natural tourism attributes, put Kentucky back on the economic map.

Description
Purchased from the Narragansett Indians by religious exiles from Massachusetts, their first permanent settlement was built in Providence in 1636.
During colonial times, large shipping fleets - sailing from Newport - traded goods for African slaves. They sold their cargo in the West Indies for molasses, sugar, wine, and more.
Eventually the tariffs and restrictive rules levied upon the colonies by England reached a boiling point, and Rhode Island was the first to declare independence.
It's the smallest U.S. State (in land size), but played a major role in the building of America, as the textile industry began here with the invention of the water-powered spinning machine. Huge factories produced the fabric, mill towns developed, and great wealth came to Rhode Island.
In addition, it was the country's manufacturing hub for files, machine tools, precious-metal industries, rubber goods, steam engines, and much more.
Closely associated with the sea, it's a favorite summer vacation area for boaters, fisherman and nautical history buffs.

    Music History Bulletin Boards
Show-Me Music This bulletin board to showcase the music and musicians of Missouri. Use clip art of our state instrument, the fiddle, our state folk dance, square dancing, the instrument mentioned in our state song (the banjo) and photos of various Missouri musicians. Add an explanation to these pics and post them on construction paper. Use large music notes and simple versions of the Missouri Map to make the bulletin board more attractive. Other ideas for information to post: Missouri University fight songs, local composers or musicians, a copy of the “Missouri Waltz”, songs about Missouri or with the word “Missouri” in them (think “Shenandoah” or “St. Louis Blues”…I’m sure you can brainstorm others) Dress this bulletin board up by using a Missouri state map as a background. If your bulletin board is too large or too small to do this easily try cutting the map into strips about 3 inches wide and using it as border instead.
Boy Oh Boy Some of the groups that I used were The Jackson Five, Boys 2 Men, 98 Degrees, etc.

    http://eduscapes.com/seeds/media/civilwar.htm
The Civil War: An Annotated Mediagraphy The Civil War was an important part of American history. State curriculum dictates that the topic is studied in high school American history classes and at the 8th grade level and provides strict standards and objectives that must be followed. Most history books do an excellent job of teaching the dates, facts, and people involved in the Civil War, but todayÕs students need more to capture their attention. By adding audio and video sources to this curriculum, the Civil War can be a topic of study that can captivate students. The purpose of this Civil War Mediagraphy is to provide teachers with resources that provide students with images, music, sounds, information, and analytical activities that carry on where textbooks leave off. Audio and video can enrich the study of the Civil War. A textbook might include a passage that describes how a drummer helps soldiers keep time during a march, or a bugle player plays taps at a funeral for lost comrades. A CD of both of these examples can provide concrete examples that brings this to life for students. Students might read how Antietam was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, but this knowledge only becomes significant to them when they see a DVD reenacting the battle.
