A Critical History, Part 1 by DR O'Connor Lysaght, 1976
In considering any sort of historical analysis of Irish Stalinism two things must be made clear. Firstly, to give an accurate account of what really happened, an ex-Stalinite is needed, since at least half the real history of the Party is never exposed to the light. All that can be presented is a certain list of published facts, most recently the official History of the CPI. However, the real ore of information is to be quarried with greater difficulty.
Having said this, the statement must be qualified further. The Stalinism of the CPI cannot be denied. However, its expression thereof is distinguished in two ways. Firstly, its philistinism is linked closely not only to the British connection but to the fact that is has rarely been challenged by any grouping with a superior grasp of the application of Marxist theory. (Irish Trotskyism has been, until recently, itself a weak and somewhat philistine growth). Accordingly, the CPI has been able to approach matters in a cooler fashion than its comrades abroad; to treat issues in a manner which is not only non-theoretical but also, because of this, formally non-sectarian. It is unlikely this will last.

http://flag.blackened.net/revolt/spain/ruta.html
A history of Spanish libertarian youth paper 'Ruta'
Inside Spain the Libertarian Youth had always had a number of mouthpieces, outstanding among them the peninsular organ 'Juventud Libre' (Free Youth) and the organ of the Catalan region 'Ruta'. Among the youth, we find the same mushrooming growth of libertarian papers as among adults. In his 'La Ciudad de la Niebla' that great observer of the Spanish character, Pio Baroja, pointed out that wherever there were three anarchists together, they would found a paper. 'Juventud Libre' which adopted the title Ruta in October 1936, was founded well before the July revolution of 1936 when the Libertarian Youth of Catalonia were the "Cultural and Propaganda Section of the FAI" something which was to bring them into conflict with the rest of the Libertarian Youth of Spain until the revolution was already a few months old. The latter had grouped themselves into the FIJL (Iberian Federation of Libertarian Youth) completely independent of the Libertarian movement's other two branches, the CNT (National Confederation of Labour) and the FAI (Iberian Anarchist Federation) in 1932. The Libertarian Youth of Catalonia (JJ.LL) were reluctant to break away from the FAR, whereby they appeared to refuse to leave the nest, though they were exceptionally well equipped in terms of experience in struggle and propaganda to do so. Unity of the youth wing was finally achieved by rallying around the FIJL and its supreme body, the Peninsular Committee in Madrid. Until this unity became a fact, of course, the pages of 'Ruta' devoted many a column to defending the stand of the Catalan youth. It is possible that, but for the war and the unitarian spirit it brought, the Catalan JJ.LL would have stuck to their guns and their original positron which was, remember, one of dependence on the FAI.

in history in the midst of the Bolshevik Revolution and ensuing civil war . As he scribbled his odds and ends, he made a note reaffirming his belief
http://www.rjgeib.com/thoughts/fate/fate.html
ART SHOULD SERVE BEAUTY
"...he made a note reaffirming his belief that art always served beauty, and beauty is delight in form, and form is the key to organizing life, since no living thing can exist without it, so that every work of art, including tragedy, expresses the joy of existence."
"[The artist] speaks to our capacity for delight and wonder, to the sense of mystery surrounding our lives; to our sense of pity, and beauty, and pain; to the latent feeling of fellowship with all creation - and to the subtle but invincible conviction of solidarity in dreams, in joy, in sorrow, in aspirations, in illusions, in hope, in fear... which binds together all humanity - the dead to the living and the living to the unborn."
Joseph Conrad "...he made a note reaffirming his belief that art always served beauty, and beauty is delight in form, and form is the key to organizing life, since no living thing can exist without it, so that every work of art, including tragedy, expresses the joy of existence. And his own ideas and notes also brought him joy, a tragic joy, a joy full of tears that exhausted him and made his head ache."
from Doctor Zhivago
by Boris Pasternak In the below passage from "Doctor Zhivago," Yuri Zhivago is drinking vodka and neglecting himself as he desperately mourns the forceful removal of Lara, the love of his life. In a stupor of pain from a broken heart, Zhivago contemplates the meaning of Life and man's place in History in the midst of the Bolshevik Revolution and ensuing civil war.

Spec / BX 9869 / .P3 / F8 / 1874
Parker, a Unitarian minister, was a noted abolitionist. His involvement with other New England abolitionists led him directly into the Kansas conflict over slavery. Although Parker was too old to move to Kansas to participate in the struggles against slavery here, he lectured and raised a great deal of money for those who were trying to make Kansas a free state (including John Brown). Remarkably, this is the only copy of a first edition available in Kansas.

Andres Nin wa s born in Spain in 1892. He held left-wing political views and for a while he was secretary to Leon Trotsky In 1935 Nin joined with Joaquin Maurin to form the Workers Party of Marxist Unification (POUM). This revolutionary anti-Stalinist Communist party was strongly influenced by the political ideas of Leon Trotsky . The group supported the collectivization of the means of production and agreed with Trotsky's concept of permanent revolution. As a result of Maurin's involvement, POUM was very strong in Catalonia. In most areas of Spain it made little impact and in 1935 POUM is estimated to have only around 8,000 members. After the Popular Front gained victory Nin became councillor of justice. He supported the government but his radical policies such as nationalization without compensation, were not introduced. During the Spanish Civil War the Workers Party of Marxist Unification grew rapidly and by the end of 1936 it was 30,000 strong with 10,000 in its own militia.

The complete collection is organized into three "General Correspondence" series. This release, which includes 2,200 annotated documents (about 6,500 images), comprises series one and contains correspondence dated from March 1829 through June 1864 that was originally gathered by Robert Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son. Users can browse the collection chronologically or search by keyword. Advisory Panel to Assess Domestic Response Capabilities for Terrorism Involving Weapons of Mass Destruction
also known as the Gilmore Commission

http://www.rand.org/nsrd/terrpanel/

The Gilmore Commission has released the fifth and final report. The commission says that by providing long-term guidance to federal, state, and local government officials, an improved homeland security strategy can help create a “new normalcy” that acknowledges the threat of terrorism will not disappear, but still preserves and strengthens civil liberties.
“There will never be a 100 percent guarantee of security for our people, the economy, and our society,” Gilmore writes in the report’s cover letter. “We must resist the urge to seek total security—it is not achievable and drains our attention from those things that can be accomplished.”
The commission also calls on the president to create an independent, bipartisan oversight board to provide counsel on homeland security efforts that may impact civil liberties, even if such impacts are unintended. The commission says the board is needed because of the potential chilling effect of government monitoring conducted in the name of homeland security.

http://www.civilwarguns.com/9201b.html
I'd like to start off this month's column with a brief mea culpa . When covering dealers in parts and supplies for Civil War shooters in my December column, I inadvertantly left out William V. Osborne (Lodgewood Mfg., Dept. CWN, 151 Oak Street, Berlin, Wisconsin 54923.) Bill Osborne maintains one of the largest inventories of parts for original and reproduction Civil War guns in the country. If you need an original or quality reproduction part for a Maynard, Smith or Burnside carbine or Springfield, Fayetteville or Richmond musket, a sear spring for your reenactment gun, a high front sight for your "shooter," or need parts to create your own custom piece, check out Bill's advertisement in the ±Civil War News ± or send an SASE for his catalog. If you need something esoteric, drop him a line. If he doesn't have it, he'll put you on his waiting list. On a recent visit to Monocacy National Battlefield in Maryland, I noted a small group of bullets on display at park headquarters. The selection was diverse, and included both .58 and .69 minie balls, conical .36 and .44 caliber revolver slugs, several "picket" or "sugar loaf" bullets asociated with mid- nineteenth century hunting or target rifles and a couple of buckshot. One projectile appeared to be from a British made Whitworth sniper rifle, a weapon most often associated with Confederate sharpshooters. According to site superintendent Susan K. Moore, the bullets were uncovered near the visitor center during preparations to open the park. The center is located in an area known as Gambrill's Mills at the time of the July 9, 1864 battle of Monocacy.

Throughout the year, Canadians will celebrate, honour, remember, and teach our youth about the contributions and sacrifice of our veterans. “Today, we ask a new generation of Canadians to surrender their time, volunteer their hearts, and take one year to fully remember a century of sacrifice. That year is 2005 - The Year of the Veteran.” - Minister Guarnieri Every year is an important year to honour veterans and their service and 2005 is especially meaningful because it marks the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War; and the Government of Canada is developing a new Veterans Charter that will better support releasing Canadian Forces members and their families who are re-entering civilian life. http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/general/sub.cfm?source=feature/yearofveteran05
