Twenty years before founding the American Red Cross, Clara Barton came to the aid of soldiers fighting in the Civil War. At the war's outbreak, Barton worked as a U.S. Patent Office clerk and collected provisions and medical supplies for the Union Army. Restless with her limited role and undeterred by War Department regulations and prevailing stereotypes, Barton became known as the "Angel of the Battlefield" as she distributed supplies and tended to the wounded and dying. Barton kept these notes during the course of the war, which documented the appalling carnage and medical conditions of the wounded transported to Fredericksburg from the Wilderness campaign. although I am a Bush supporter (mainly because he is Pro Life), I do agree that those maps are a bit disconcerting. In many instances I favor a more liberal agenda such as helping the homeless, education etc. I don'tmuch care for the corporate culture of greed, corruption, explotatin and sleaze that many Bush supporters just adore.....DJR Posted by: Dennis i think the only thing this really shows is that this cultural/geographical division is nothing new. this country has been split along these lines for quite some time and over many different issues.

The Civil War . . .A time that tore our nation apart, when brother fought against brother This site is an attempt to tell the story of the Men and Women from New Hampshire who served in the Civil War. While history books, period newspapers, printed biographies and the Official Records have provided an outline of the events of the war, the real "story" is found in the letters and diaries of those who served and those whose lives were most affected.
To help us achieve our goal, we would like to encourage you to contribute information — about your ancestor and his/her service to the country, genealogy or links to your personal pages. We are especially interested in copies of rosters, photos, diaries, letters or papers which refer to New Hampshire men and women who served in the Civil War.
Please send copies of any material you wish to share to the addresses below

...and they [Yankees] are marked ... with such a perversity of character, as to constitute, from that circumstance, the natural division of our parties Thomas Jefferson Some say simplistically that the Civil War was fought over slavery. Unfortunately, there is no "simple" reason. The causes of the war were a complex series of events, including slavery, that began long before the first shot was fired. Competing nationalisms, political turmoil, the definition of freedom, the preservation of the Union, the fate of slavery and the structure of our society and economy could all be listed as significant contributing factors in America's bloodiest conflict. Complaints of Georgians Many of the problems Georgians saw more than one hundred fifty years ago are being reiterated today. The "oppressive" federal government. High taxes(tariffs before the war). A growing government unwilling to listen to law abiding citizens. Sound familiar? They were complaints levied from 1816 on in Georgia. Constitutional Questions People argued about the meaning of the Constitution since its infancy. From a legal standpoint, the document defines the relationship between the people of the United States and the federal government, detailing the powers and responsibilities of each. The latest exhibit at the Delaware History Museum, Delaware in the Civil War , tells the story of one such period. The Civil War tore Delaware apart just as the United States of America as a whole was torn asunder. Delawareans anxiously watched the storm clouds of war grow ever darker throughout the fateful election year of 1860. G eographically and philosophically, the second smallest state found itself caught up in the hostile debate that pitted north against south, abolitionist against slaveholder, and nationalist against states-rights advocate. S lavery remained legal in Delaware and some Delawareans wanted to keep it that way. Others thought that it was an outdated institution that would die if left alone. A minority of Delawareans thought slavery was morally wrong and should be immediately abolished.
