132. To Remember Spain / After Fifty Years: The Spanish Civil War
A history of the Spanish libertarian and anarchist movement with a look back at the Spanish civil war.
http://www.spunk.org/library/writers/bookchin/sp001642/fifty.html
After Fifty Years:
The Spanish Civil War
Between myth and reality there lies a precarious zone of transition that occasionally captures the truth of each. Spain, caught in a world-historic revolution fifty years ago, was exactly such an occasion a rare moment when the most generous, almost mythic dreams of freedom seemed suddenly to become real for millions of Spanish workers, peasants, and intellectuals. For this brief period of time, this shimmering moment, as it were, the world stood breathlessly still, while the red banners of revolutionary socialism and the red-and-black banners of revolutionary anarchosyndicalism floated over most of Spain's major cities and thousands of her villages. Taken together with the massive, spontaneous collectivization of factories, fields, even hotels and restaurants, the oppressed classes of Spain reclaimed history with a force and passion of an unprecedented scope and gave a stunning reality in many areas of the peninsula to the ageless dream of a free society. The Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 was, at its inception, the last of the classical European workers' and peasants' revolutions not, let me make it clear, a short-lived "uprising," a cadre-controlled "guerrilla war," or a simple civil conflict between regions for national supremacy. And like so many life-forms that appear for the last time, before fading away forever, it was the most far-reaching and challenging of all such popular movements of the great revolutionary era that encompasses Cromwellian England of the late 1640s and the working-class uprisings of Vienna and Asturias of the early 1930s.

http://www2.lhric.org/pocantico/civilwar/cwar.htm
The Civil War for Kids The students in Mrs. Huber's class at Pocantico Hills School in Sleepy Hollow, New York have been learning about the Civil War. We read about this important time in our nation's history and wrote about it. We made a t imeline of important events from 1860 to 1865. Our bar graphs contain data about the North and the South in 1861 when the Civil War began. Each graph compares the resources of the two regions. We looked at Civil War battle victories , used our mapping skills to examine the nation in detail, and made both Confederate and Union flags . We have drawings of Civil War uniforms , short biographies of Civil War leaders , images of other leaders links to other Civil War Sites, and activity sheets for you to do. We hope you enjoy our work! Timeline

Civil War (1860-1865)
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863
Conflict over issues of how much control the federal government should have over the states, industrialization, trade, and especially slavery had increased tension between Northern and Southern states. After Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, 11 Southern states seceded (or withdrew) from the Union and set up an independent governmentthe Confederate States of America. These events led to the outbreak of the Civil Wara brutal, bloody, four-year conflict that left the South defeated and ended slavery at the cost of more than half a million lives.
