Grades 4-5. When salt supplies were cut off by the war, salt production became a crucial endeavor for citizens of Florida. In many respects, Florida remains the forgotten state of the Confederacy. Although the third state to secede, Florida’s small population and meager industrial resources made the state of little strategic importance to either side. However Florida’s 13000 mile coastline proved invaluable for the production of salt, made by boiling sea water in large kettles or evaporating it in man-made tidal pools.

42. The Civil War In Louisiana
Twenty major civil war battles and engagements were fought in Louisiana. and at times glamorized the war Between the States, or the civil war.
http://www.crt.state.la.us/crt/tourism/civilwar/civilwar.htm
Between April 17,1862 and May 18, 1864 20 major Civil War battles and engagements were fought in on Louisiana soil. Lives were upturned and destroyed. Tragedy and bravery gave way to bittersweet success and failure grand beyond imaginings. The Prize: Control of the mighty Mississippi River. The Cost: Immeasurable.
Ballads, poems, novels, historical accounts and screen-plays have described, explained and at times glamorized the "War Between the States," or the Civil War. They can only partially succeed in helping us to understand the Cruel War. On both sides, young and old alike, confident of a rapid victory, enthusiastically joined the cause, fighting bravely for what they believed. From generals and privates to those left behind, no one anticipated the long years of fighting suffering and mourning which lay ahead. Contents

"What has occured in this case must never recur in similar cases. Human nature will not change. In any future great national trial, compared with the men of this, we shall have as weak and as strong, as silly and as wise, as bad and as good. Let us therefore study the incidents of this, as philosophy to learn the wisdom from, and none of them as wrongs to be revenged." Abraham Lincoln RETURN to Louisiana Office of Tourism Page

The American Civil War Homepage
"Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history."
The American Civil War Homepage gathers together in one place hypertext links to the most useful identified electronic files about the American Civil War (1861-1865). The page opens a gateway to the Internet's multi-formatted resources about what is arguably the seminal event in American history. Not only was the War the occasion for the abolition of slavery, but by conflict's end the re-United States had emerged as a modern, industrialized power. It is this sense of history, transcending the stale recitation of dates and facts and alive with meaning, to which Lincoln referred when he wrote in 1862, "Fellow citizens, we cannot escape history." The links gathered in this Homepage are a metaphor for the interconnections of the War's past with our present and future. Thus, technology reveals the deep-structure of the human experience and helps to explain the continuing American fascination with the struggle between North and South, free and slave.

Civil War As in all other conflicts in which fighting manpower was needed, Texas furnished more than its share during the Civil War. The State was predominantly on the Confederate side and the majority of the men donned the grey uniform to fight for Jeff Davis. The Secession Convention in February, 1861, commissioned Colonels John S. Ford and Henry E. McCulloch , both old Indian fighters and Rangers, to each enlist a regiment for border service for short periods, six or 12 months. McCulloch's and Dalyrimple's forces were consolidated and afterwards reorganized and enlisted for 12 months in the Confederate service as the First Texas Mounted Rifles This command was succeeded by an organization first known as the Frontier Regiment organized as State troops in 1862, and afterwards known as the 36th Texas Cavalry in the Confederate service. In the spring of 1864, Governor Murrah transferred the regiment to the Confederate service and it was sent to the coast. In 1863-64, another regiment was on the frontier commanded by Colonel James Bourland , which had several engagements with Indians. The last

And welcome to Augusta, Maine: June 1865! On your right, lined up along State Street, is the 19th Maine Infantry, home at last from three years in the Army of the Potomac. On the balconies and porticoes of the famed hotel "The Augusta House" are various dignitaries including the Governor, the Adjutant General, the Mayor and their wives and guests. We don't know who the guy on the roof is. In the center is a little band of musicians who played for every regiment that left for the war out of Augusta; and for every regiment that returned here. Off in the distance you can see the dome of the original Capitol Building of the State of Maine. Hala Jaber, Amman
NI_MPU('middle'); Tension has increased in the past two weeks following the return of Abu Musab al- Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born head of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Zarqawi left the country in May to seek medical treatment for a chest wound suffered in an American airstrike, but has now recovered sufficiently to resume his activities. However, he is preparing for a comeback in elections scheduled for December. His supporters believe he will be helped in part by the increasing impact of Iraqi gunmen and suicide bombers since Ibrahim Jaafari became prime minister in April. More than 1,400 people have since been killed, and many Iraqis who regarded Allawi as a ruthless leader now speak wistfully of the relative calm enjoyed under his rule. Allawi is in intense negotiations to create a new multi-ethnic secular coalition before the general election.
