CIVIL WAR RECORDS IN THE FLORIDA STATE ARCHIVES Florida Confederate Pension Files Online
The Florida State Archives has digitized its collection of Confederate pension records with over 13,000 pensions available online.
Florida played an active, if less than prominent, role in the American Civil War. Once derisively called the "Smallest Tadpole in the Dirty Pool of Secession," Florida had joined the Union only fifteen years before its January, 1861 secession, and the state's population was the smallest by far of any in the Confederacy. Florida nonetheless provided an estimated 15,000 troops for Confederate service, as well as several thousand black and white Union volunteers. The state's coastline harbored blockade runners and Florida beef, pork, sugar, molasses, and salt helped feed the armies of the South. A number of military engagements occurred in the state, most importantly the February 20, 1864 battle of Olustee, which ended in a decisive Confederate victory. At the close of the war, Tallahassee was the last state capital east of the Mississippi River to remain in Confederate hands.
The Florida State Archives maintains a number of collections documenting Florida's role in the War Between the States, as well as some material from other states. Listed in this pamphlet are the most significant of these collections.

Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields
Technical Volume II: Battle Summaries
Prepared for the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, United States Senate; Committee on Natural Resources, United States House of Representatives; and the Secretary of the Interior 1993 (updated 1997) Foreword The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission was established by public lawon November 28, 1990, because of national concern over the increasing loss of Civil War sites. The 15-member Commission, appointed by Congress and by the Secretary of the Interior, was asked to identify the nation’s historically significant Civil War sites; determine their relative importance; determine their condition; assess threats to their integrity; and recommend alternatives for preserving and interpreting them. The Report on the Nation’s Civil War Battlefields presents the Commission’s findings.
Acknowledgements The battle summaries were researched and written by Dale E. Floyd and David W. Lowe, staff members of the Civil War Sites Advisory Commission and historians with the National Park Service. Edwin C. Bearss, Commission member and retired Chief Historian of the National Park Service, served as technical advisor. Editing and publication oversight was provided by Rebecca Shrimpton, Historic Preservation Planner, and Tanya M. Gossett, Historic Preservation Planner, both with the American Battlefield Protection Program (through a cooperative agreement with the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers).

    29. The War For State's Rights
factual history of the war for states rights commonly known as the civil war.the truth about the battles, generals Lee and Grant and Abraham Lincoln.
    http://civilwar.bluegrass.net/
First of all, I feel the need to point out that there never was a civil war in the USA. By definition, a civil war is where 2 or more factions are fighting for control of the same government. The War For States' Rights was not about control of the US government, but about our desire to govern ourselves as an independent nation. That desire still remains strong with us. That having been said, I have put down as much information about the War For State's Rights as I have on hand, and will continually add to it as I get more. Information about Battles and Campaigns, Distinguished Military Units, Statesmen, Soldier's Lives during "the conflict", Officers, Weapons, Prison Camps, Blockade Runners, Spies, Slavery Issues, and many other categories. I am a Confederate all the way to the bone and would love nothing better than to list only triumphs by our Glorious Nation, but this would not be fair to history. All of my information can be easily verified by anyone who disputes any of it. Those who have actually studied history (or at least paid attention in history class, assuming they had a good teacher like I did - thank you Mr. Simms) know that the War For State's Rights was not about slavery (as the occupational government would like you to believe), but about where (at its most basic level) governing laws, and regulations should come from. This site will, undoubtedly, go through many updates and revisions as time goes on, though I will ONLY post truthful and accurate information. I am not a racist, skinhead, hate-monger, or any of the other labels usually associated with those who dispute the distorted Yankee version of this period in the history of our two countries usually are.

    32. Causes Of The Civil War - The Relation Of Slavery, State's Rights, Sectionalism,
A brief look at slavery, States Rights, and sectional issues that led to theAmerican civil war.
    http://www.swcivilwar.com/cw_causes.html
The Civil War was caused by a myriad of conflicting pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences and pride, and set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. At the root of all of the problems was the institution of slavery, which had been introduced into North America in early colonial times. The American Revolution had been fought to validate the idea that all men were created equal, yet slavery was legal in all of the thirteen colonies throughout the revolutionary period. Although it was largely gone from the northern states by 1787, it was still enshrined in the new Constitution of the United States, not only at the behest of the Southern ones, but also with the approval of many of the Northern delegates who saw that there was still much money to be made in the slave trade by the Yankee shipping industry. Eventually its existence came to color every aspect of American life. At the Constitutional Convention there were arguments over slavery. Representatives of the Northern states claimed that if the Southern slaves were mere property, then they should not be counted toward voting representation in Congress. Southerners, placed in the difficult position of trying to argue, at least in this case, that the slaves were human beings, eventually came to accept the three-fifths compromise, by which five slaves counted as three free men toward that representation. By the end of the convention the institution of slavery itself, though never specifically mentioned, was well protected within the body of the Constitution.

A civil war is a war in which the competing parties are segments of the same country or empire . Civil war is usually a high intensity stage in an unresolved political struggle for national control of state power . As in any war, the conflict may be over other matters such as religion ethnicity , or distribution of wealth . Some civil wars are also categorized as revolutions when major societal restructuring is a possible outcome of the conflict. An insurgency , whether successful or not, is likely to be classified as a civil war by some historians if, and only if, organised armies fight conventional battles . Other historians state the criteria for a civil war is that there must be prolonged violence between organized factions or defined regions of a country (conventionally fought or not). Ultimately the distinction between a "civil war" and a "revolution" or other name is arbitrary, and determined by usage. The successful insurgency of the 1640s in England which led to the (temporary) overthrow of the monarchy became known as the English Civil War . The successful insurgency of the 1770s in British colonies in America, with organised armies fighting battles, came to be known as the

    January 1861 The South Secedes.
When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas and the threat of secession by four more Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America.
February 1861 The South Creates a Government.
At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, a document similar to the United States Constitution, but with greater stress on the autonomy of each state. Jefferson Davis was named provisional president of the Confederacy until elections could be held.

Yesterday at a conference in Baghdad, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, a prominent Shia leader who is also the head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq announced, “In gratitude to the efforts, sacrifices and heroic positions of our brothers and brave sons from the Badr Organization.” “We must give them the priority in bearing administrative and government responsibilities especially in the security field,” he added, while the “President” of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, listened on. The Badr Organization (formerly known as the Badr Brigade) was formed by al-Hakim’s brother in the ‘80’s to fight Saddam Hussein. It has long since received funding and other “support” from Iran. While civilians in Fallujah, Mosul, Ramadi, Baquba, Baghdad, Haditha and other cities in Iraq continue to complain of being beaten, looted and humiliated by the members of the Iraqi Army who are members of both the Badr Organization and Kurdish Peshmerga, these militias now have the overt backing of the interim Iraqi “government.” It is also being reported that members of the Badr Organization, who are essentially running much of the “security” in southern Iraq at this point, have been instituting Sharia law. Thus, women are reporting being threatened with death or rape if they attend university, and more conservative clothing rules are being enforced.
