183. Radio Netherlands Child Soldiers Of Liberia
Provides information about the use of child soldiers in the Liberian civil war (19891997).
http://www.rnw.nl/en/liberia/index.html
by Eric Beauchemin The West African nation of Liberia is still picking up the pieces after a brutal 7 year civil war which left 150-thousand people dead and forced one in two to flee. It's estimated that 20% of the combatants in Liberia's civil war were children. They were among the most brutal fighters: many of them killed, raped, tortured and even practiced cannibalism. Since the return of peace two years ago, efforts have been made to help these children come to terms with their wartime past and to give them back their childhood. You can hear the documentary ``Faceless Warriors" here on the web at the top of this page. And further down, you can listen to an interview with the missionary Chet Lowe. CHILD SOLDIERS IN THE WORLD There are an estimated 300,000 child soldiers in some 30 countries around the world. The 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child defines childhood as below the age of 18 years, although it currently recognises 15 as the minimum age for voluntary or compulsory recruitment. With new weapons that are lightweight and easy to fire, children are more easily armed, with less training than ever before. During the past two decades, child soldiers have played an important role in countries such as El Salvador, Nicaragua, Iran, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sudan, Angola, Afghanistan and Cambodia.
Since 1994, a United Nations' working group has been trying to develop new international standards that would protect children from the horrors of war. It is lobbying to raise the minimum age for military recruitment to 18, but it has encountered strong opposition from the United States.

THE CHILDERS AND CHILDRESS CIVIL WAR RESEARCH CENTER I heard my brothers call... distant, from the grave...
it called like the long roll...
summoning us to a place and time we had nearly forgotten...
We will not turn away...
Was it really so long ago?
I will be as faithful in death as he was in life and I will remember...
not because someone told me that I should,
but because I could be no other way and he would do this for me.
Ever faithful and evergreen...
Only those who die young... may remain that way forever.
They live only because I refuse to let them die. One hundred and fourty some years ago, our Childers/Childress forefathers heard the the call to defend their homeland. Hundreds of our family answered the  call, as they have in every war since the founding of our nation. Yet, this was a different war. A war not against a foreign invader, or to defend the freedoms of  another nation. This was a war of brother against brother, north fighting south. It has many names, the war of the rebellion, the war for southern independence the war against northern aggression, or the most common the Civil War.

THOMAS McMANUS PLAQUE
Barry Square
657 Maple Avenue
Hartford, CT
Dimensions: Heights: Plaque, 48"; stele, 7', 6" Dedicated: September 1, 1923 Type: Bronze plaque on granite stele Sculptor: John G. Hardy Foundry: Gorham Company Historical Significance: McManus served in the Union Army, 1862-1863, as a major in the 25th Connecticut Regiment. He saw active service in Louisiana and commanded his regiment at Port Hudson. After the war he was active in veterans' organizations and reunions, being a chief organizer for the erection of the nearby GRIFFIN A. STEDMAN MONUMENT . The 25th Regiment Veterans Association was responsible for THOMAS McMANUS PLAQUE. McManus served as a judge, member of the General Assembly, and director of the Connecticut State Prison at Wethersfield. At the September 1, 1923, ceremonies the memorial was unveiled by his daughter, Ellen McManus Dooley. The Reverend John J. McCook made remarks, on the traditional subjects of liberty, law, and Union 58 years after the war was over. Artistic Significance: THOMAS McMANUS PLAQUE is significant artistically because it is in the tradition of realistic memorial sculpture. Realistic memorial sculpture, such as THE McMANUS bust, continued in favor in America through the early 20th century, when abstract non-representational art influenced much work in the wider field of sculpture. John G. Hardy, sculptor, is not listed in the standard directories. The Gorham Company of Providence, Rhode Island, cast many bronze plaques and figures for memorials in the early 20th century.

Women Were There
The War Between the States was also a war between brothers, cousins, friends and neighbors - and some of them were women. We know from certain military records, antique books, and lately some newer books, that women served as nurses, vivandieres, sutlers, and as Union and Confederate soldiers, and even spies. A vivandiere, by the way, is a French army term applied to women who provided food, provisions, and liqueurs to soldiers. For more about them please visit History of Vivandieres. Sutlers were peddlers who sold goods to military units in the field. One woman served without pay as a physician, acted as a spy, and was a prisoner of war.
Dr. Mary Walker
Many stories have been written about unique Civil War women, including Sarah Emma Edmonds, alias Franklin Thompson. In Nurse and Spy in the Union Army, 1865, which is subtitled The Adventures and Experiences of a Woman in Hospitals, Camps, and Battle-Fields, the author chronicles her adventures and escapades as she gathers information and nurses the wounded. Some say that this book is a mix of fantasy and fiction. The original is in my personal collection and it is a delightful book to read. Historians have verified that Emma Edmonds, as Franklin Thompson, did serve in the units she mentioned at the times she said.

Another fairly well known story is that
of Jennie Hodgers who served and fought
for three years as Albert Cashier.

The Civil War Defenses of Washington, D.C.

With the outbreak of the American Civil War, Washington, DC turned into the training ground, arsenal, supply depot, and nerve center for the Union cause. Newly formed regiments encamped in every quarter, and streets reverberated under the wheels of cannons. Cattle for meat grazed on the National Mall; sacks of flour, stacked against siege, surrounded the U.S. Treasury. To protect the city and vital supply routes from enemy hands, Union armies built a ring of earthen fortifications.
Capital Without Defenses
In the spring of 1861 the city lay open to attack by states that withdrew from the Union. Virginia, just across the Potomac, seceded in April. Maryland, a slave state, had many southern sympathizers. They answered President Lincoln's call for volunteers by burning bridges and tearing tracks to prevent Union soldiers from reaching the capital. In spite of hostile acts, enough regiments arrived to seize and fortify footholds across the river in Virginia, occupying points from below Alexandria to hills above Chain Bridge, including the Arlington plantation of the Robert E. Lee family. This move placed offices of the federal government beyond the reach of Confederate cannons.

Regular issue US coinage was hoarded during the Civil War restricting merchants ability to make small change. Some merchants had tokens made to give out as change in their stores. If you ordered the least expensive tokens you would receive a combination of two existing dies, usually of a patriotic nature or similar to a US cent, these are called Civil War Patriotic Tokens Civil War Sutler Tokens were a special kind of Store Card that was issued by sutlers who supplied the Union Army. If you had more to spend you could have one or two dies custom made for you with information specific to your business (i.e. location, occupation, specialties, etc.) these are Civil War Store Cards RARITY RATINGS:
The rarity scale for Civil War tokens is listed below. Most collectors collect by town, merchant or die. Very few try to get one of each die combination and metal composition. So value is determined more by supply and demand than by individual rarity. Additionally, more than a few pieces have incorrect rarity ratings (both over and under rated) in current references due to outdated information, hoards, mistakes or typo's.

Important Notice - New Law Concerning Eligibility for Headstones and Markers
The history of government headstones has an identity of its own apart from development of the National Cemetery Administration. The original standard grave marker precedes the establishment of national cemeteries in 1862 and actually has its origin in the frontier days of this country prior to the Civil War. In the normal course of events, soldiers died and garrison commanders were compelled to bury their dead, mainly in cemetery plots within post reservations. Those not so fortunate were buried where death occurred. In the course of time, a fairly uniform method of marking burials came into being. A wooden board with a rounded top and bearing a registration number or inscription became the standard. No centralized system for recording burials existed. Although the system may have been adequate for frontier forces, it could scarcely meet the needs of the national army that came into being at the beginning of the Civil War. Two months after the first battle of Manassas, the War Department issued General Orders number 75, Sept. 11, 1861, which made commanders of national forces responsible for burials and marking graves. In the same General Orders, the Quartermaster General of the Army was directed to provide headboards as well as blank books and forms for the preservation of burial records. War Department General Orders number 75 created the first organized system of marking graves.

California Notes, published in 1876. The young men who settled San Francisco at the time of the gold rush to California were enthusiastic advocates of ideas, but not so old that their ideas had become inflexible crystallized. They had come from all parts of the world and the long journeys had thrown them into close touch with others with varying ideas and ideals. During these months of intercourse, of mutual dangers and privations, a broad spirit of humanity and tolerance had been born. San Francisco has been a most cosmopolitan community since its name was given to the little settlement of Yerba Buena. At the outbreak of the Civil War nationals and those from different states of the American republic had not assembled in groups and sections of the city. Contact was closer.
