Monocacy Maryland (345K) Pea Ridge Arkansas (223K) Horseshoe Bend Alabama (230K) DVDs Before Ken Burns, Glory, and Gettysburg, the Civil War proved an effective backdrop for this 1982 miniseriesavailable complete and uncut on this three-disc setabout two families divided by the War Between the States. John Hammond stars as John Geyser, a Southerner caught "betwixt and between" when he becomes a war correspondent for the Northern newspaper published by his uncle. Like a Civil War-era Forrest Gump, he finds himself "where history's in the making," from the Battle of Bull Run to the scene of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Stacy Keach costars as an Army scout who takes the "fresh off the farm" Geyser under his wing. Julia Duffy is the schoolmarm who loves Keach. The ham-handed dialogue is a guilty pleasure ("What's wrong with this land that produces such a bitter fruit?" asks the embittered Geyser). The meticulously mounted battle scenes, though, are a Civil War reenactor's dream.

Database of Illinois Civil War Veterans
This database of Illinois Civil War Veterans indexes the first eight volumes of the nine volume publication, Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois . (The ninth volume lists veterans of Black Hawk, Mexican, and Spanish-American Wars.) This 1900-1901 publication, originating from the rosters maintained during the Civil War by the Illinois Adjutant General, is the result of an 1899 Illinois statute mandating that a corrected version of these records and subsequent publications be printed. The names of approximately 250,000 men, organized into 175 regiments, are found in its pages. The work includes a roster and history for each regiment.

State by State: Special Features Back to section
Reconstruction Timeline: 1863-1866 January 1: President Abraham Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation , declaring that the majority of the nation's slave population "henceforth shall be free." July: In New York City, opposition to the nation's first military draft triggers a riot, the largest in American history, as poor white Northerners protest being forced to fight to end slavery. Over four days, the insurrection develops into wholesale violence, with an uncounted number of victims. December 8: President Lincoln announces the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction. It offers pardon and restoration of property except slaves to Confederates who swear allegiance to the Union and agree to accept emancipation. Known as the 10 Percent Plan, it requires only 10% of a former Confederate state's voters to pledge the oath before the state can begin the process of readmission into the Union. Early 1864: President Lincoln begins Reconstruction in the Union-occupied former Confederate state of Louisiana. Lincoln's lenient 10 percent policy upsets Radical Republicans, who expect the South to do more to gain readmission, and believe Lincoln's approach does not provide enough protection to ex-slaves. July: In response to Lincoln's plan, Congress passes its own, the Wade-Davis Bill. It ups the allegiance requirement from 10% to a majority of a state's voters, limits many former Confederates from political participation in state reconstruction, demands blacks receive not only their freedom but equality before the law, and imposes a series of other requirements on the states. Lincoln does not sign the Wade-Davis Bill; his pocket veto means the bill does not pass into law.
