Milledge ville
Milledgeville's Civil War history falls into two categories: the political activities which occurred here when it was Georgia's Civil War capital, and the occupation Nov. 22-25, 1864 by Gen. W.T. Sherman's split Left Wing, which came together here briefly from Eatonton and Shady Dale to cross the Oconee River. Milledgeville, a planned town inspired by Savannah and Washington, D.C., was the state capital from 1803-68. When the capital was moved to Atlanta in 1868 during Reconstruction, the town experienced economic decline but later rebounded in the early 20th century. Today, Georgia's antebellum capital boasts a wealth of well-preserved Federal-style architecture, enhanced by Greek Revival, Victorian, and Classic Revival houses. Easy to tour on foot and beautiful in the spring, a map and guide to 37 significant sites is available from the Welco me Center at 200 W. Hancock Street, 912-452-4687.

Causes
The Virginia civil, better known as Bacon's rebellion, was largely attributable to economic malaise in the colony looking for a scapegoat. Declining prices for local products such as tobacco were compounded by natural disasters (floods, hurricanes, drought), rising prices for manufactured goods from England, and English losses in the Dutch wars . Apparently unable to understand the complexity of economic reality, many colonists blamed the local Indians for their plight. In July 1675 Doeg Indians raided the plantation of Thomas Mathews in retaliation for non-payment on some trade goods he had obtained from them. The dispute escalated out of control when colonists retaliated in turn against the wrong tribe, the Susquehanaugs. Governor William Berkeley, who had been restored to his pre-English Civil War appointment with the restoration of the British monarchy in 1660, sought to defuse the crisis by calling a concliatory meeting of the offended parties. Several colonists, including Nathaniel Bacon, Jr., Berkeley's cousin by marriage, refused to listen to Berkeley's appeals for restraint, and murdered several tribal chiefs.

"The Council Of War." Ca. 1864. 8 x 12. Mezzotint. Excellent condition. A striking mezzotint showing a "Council of War" between Grant and Sherman. This very realistic image, with its camp scene and excellent portraits of the generals, is a fine example of the patriotic prints issued during and just after the war.
Louis N. Rosenthal. "The Soldier's Dream of Home." Philadelphia: William Smith, 1864. Lithograph. 16 1/2 x 22 1/4. Repaired tears in margins and old stains at top just touching image. Otherwise, very good condition. Louis N. Rosenthal was one of four brothers who emigrated from Poland around the middle of the century and worked in lithography in Philadelphia. The Civil War, not surprisingly, offered Louis and his brothers an opportunity of producing prints with a ready market. This stirring image shows a soldier sleeping in an encampment, over which flies the American flag, while dreaming of coming home to his family. A sad print which would have rung a familiar note with its intended audience of those who stayed at home and dreamed of their sons, husbands and fathers away at the front.

The Civil War is the single most significant event in all of U.S. history, and Americans continue to struggle to come to terms with the Civil War's relationship to American politics, nationhood, and race relations. Well over 65,000 books have been written on the subject and new ones appear every year. There are Civil War Societies throughout the world. Battlefield reenactments draw participants from many countries as far away as Germany and Japan. The venerable statesman Sir Winston Churchill wrote, "The American Civil War has given me my only two heroes: Abraham Lincoln and Robert E. Lee." From 1861 through 1865, the Potomac River divided the United Stated into two nations at war, making Virginia and the Washington, D.C., area the center of the storm that ravaged and remade the nation.
The Civil War Institute is a week-long special summer program designed to introduce you to the key causes and consequences of the Civil War by exploring the remnants and remembrances of the era that remain in the nation's capital. The institute combines morning lectures with afternoon thematic study tours to important historical sites in the D.C. area, providing students with a sense of history as it was lived. Institute Co-Directors Alan Kraut, professor, Department of History, and Ed Smith, professor of anthropology and Director of American Studies, in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University, will lecture, lead discussions, and guide thematic tours of local sites.

Why Americans are still fighting over who was right and who was wrong in the Civil War BY ANDREW CURRY
Who won the Civil War? You'd have a hard time finding out at Gettysburg. Sure, there are plenty of artifacts in the dilapidated vistor center: cases full of gray and blue uniforms, fading regimental flags, and rows of shining rifles. Step outside, and you'll learn about the flanking movements and angles of fire, the storied charges and tactical gambits that decided the momentous three day battle. The 1,320 monuments, markers, and memorials that dot the fields of Gettysburg National Military Park pay special attention to troop movements and casualty lists, emphasizing the valor and courage of those who fought. Only a few mention the preservation of the Union; none celebrate the end of slavery.
For almost 2 million visitors each year, the Pennsylvania battlefield confirms everything they know from documentaries, Hollywood, and popular fiction: that the war was America's epic, a heroic conflict both sides fought for freedom. The same tale is told at battlefields across the country. And it's wrong. Gettysburg is the fight's most prominent battlefield, traditionally described there as "the high-water mark of the Confederacy," with the spotlight on Robert E. Lee's audacious generalship and the bravery of the Confederate charges. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, and its "new birth of freedom," are relegated to a small monument across the street from the visitor center. That part of the story was "almost ignoredÊ...Êbecause it didn't agree with the older version of the battle" as a morally neutral conflict between two equally honorable foes, says Columbia University historian Eric Foner.

O n to Richmond" was the battle cry of Northern politicians, military leaders and newspapermen as the war began. A quick, powerful thrust would cast aside Southern resistance, topple the Confederate capital and end the war. So went the promise. Maps made it look easy. Only 100 miles or so separated the two warring capitals. But maps don't show the quality of the resistance. Maps don't show the ineptness and genius of leaders. The most direct road to Richmond was straight south. Northern armies under Gens. McDowell, Burnside, Hooker and Meade tried that road and found it blocked, most times by determined Confederates under Robert E. Lee. Finally, in the spring of 1864, U.S. Grant took command and drove relentlessly south. His soldiers marched into Richmond nearly a year later. The countryside west of the Tidewater and east of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Washington and Petersburg is the most bloodsoaked in the country. Thousands died fighting at places no one had heard of before, places like Cold Harbor, Chancellorsville, Malvern Hill, Spotsylvania, Brandy Station and the North Anna River. More fell during encounters at places that had no name.
