Introduction
It is June 1, 1865, and the war has been over for about a month. You are newspaper reporters working for the finest paper in your state, the Herald . The publisher of your newspaper has called a meeting the newspaper staff. He said, “We do not want people to forget what has happened during the past fifteen years. We must record the truth as we know it about the war and what led up to it so that others will remember.” Task
Your class will form different groups representing the staffs of newspapers in various cities. Some newspapers will represent the Southern point of view and others will represent the Northern point of view.
Your newspaper staff must research, write and edit a “Commemorative Issue" of your Herald newspaper about the issues, events and people surrounding that critical event called the Civil War by some people, the War Between the States by others. The time period covered by this commemorative issue will be 1850-1865. The newspaper staff members will have various assignments.
You will be using your textbook, library resources, and the Internet to find the information that will help you write your articles. Some specific Internet links have been listed with each assignment. However, you may search any of the

Introduction You are a team of newspaper reporters, living in the civil war era. Battles are raging all around you: brother pitted against brother; father against son; neighbor against neighbor. Golden meadows and rolling hills you and your friends once played in are becoming soaked in crimson with the blood of a nation's most valued resource; it's citizenry. What was once a courageous new union is now being torn apart before your own eyes. Task Your team is assigned the task of researching, writing, and editing a single edition of your newspaper that focuses on a specific battle during the civil war. Include in this edition: a news article about the battle, an editorial, and at least three of the following additional items: an advertisement, a political cartoon, an obituary, or a human interest story. Process
  • Establish the needed roles for each member of your group in order to get an edition of the paper published. For example: editor, news reporter, social or feature writer, a political cartoonist, a photographer, a obituary writer, or subscriber. Decide as a group if you are to be a Union or a Confederate newspaper.

The power this conflict still holds over us are testified to by the sheer number of Civil War resources on the Internet. This Civil War site offers an overview, geared largely for younger students. It also differs by comparing the Civil War to another Civil War the United States fought in—the war in Vietnam. The comparison is extended to the Vietnamese people, who experienced the full weight of the war, just as so many Americans were crushed by war one hundred and fifty years ago. This project began with a Civil War quiz featuring a question for each of the 50 states and linked to my North America site. This illustrates the fact that the Civil War touched all of today’s fifty states in one way or another. Even Alaska and Hawaii. More information is available for each state at Geobop’s North America. American Civil War Obsession

Summary:
The four years of the American Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, has managed to inspire and nurture a deep, romantic nostalgia for this period which, if anything, seems to be growing. At last count the number of books devoted to the civil war exceeds 60,000.
Today, the enthusiasm for civil war nostalgia is maintained not only in the passionate re-enactment of Civil War battles in full regalia, but also in museums, memorials, Confederate trivia quizzes and enduring organisations such as the Union of Confederate Daughters and Children of the Confederacy.
Now this obsession has spawned an imaginative book on the Civil War by an Australian with no formal connections to the war at all. Peter Minack is a teacher from Melbourne who's just published "Campaigning with Grant" a fictionalised account of the civil war seen through the eyes of John A. Rawlins, Chief of Staff to General Ulysees S. Grant. And one of the best accounts yet of reportage from the American South into this phenomenon is Tony Horwitz's "Confederates in the Attic".

There could be as many as 60,000 war memorials in the UK
In nearly every city, town or village in the UK there is a monument to the war-dead. No one really knows how many there are, but current estimates place the number at more than 60,000. Hundreds of volunteers and a few dedicated staff at Britain's Imperial War Museum are working on a 10- year project to catalogue them all for posterity. Lost landmarks Often pictures of war memorials were made into postcards
Many war memorials have become decaying local landmarks that hardly draw a second glance. In 1988 the museum's director-general, Alan Borg, became concerned that the monuments could one day be lost forever and no record of them would exist. He started the National Inventory of War Memorials, which is expected to be completed by 2001. Nick Hewitt, who has been running the project for the past couple of years, says that so far around 27,000 memorials have been recorded. When the whole project is finished it is hoped the results will be available on the Internet.

Indiana Battle Flag Collection On Civil War battlefields, regimental colors or flags provided an important means for soldiers to mark the positions of their regiments and for their officers to convey instructions to the men under their command. Each regiment had a color company or a color guard, whose assignment was to bear the colors into battle and protect them. Each member of a color guard or company was selected for this position based on his courage and steadiness under fire, by the Regimental Commanders. The flags were carried by unarmed color sergeants, and accompanied by armed color corporals, who were instructed not to engage in combat unless the flags were in immediate danger of capture, The flags became the physical symbol of a units pride and courage, a rallying point in combat and the source of many heroic deeds in their defense Click below to see full image, view flag inventory or obtain photo order form

Lew Wallace and the Indiana Zouaves, 11th Indiana Regiment Infantry
The 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment was organized at Indianapolis on April 25, 1861, for a three month term of service, then reorganized and mustered-in for the three years' service on August 31, 1861, with Col. Lewis Wallace as its commander. In the early days of the war many regiments assumed identities to distinguish them from others being organized. The 11th was recognized as a Zouave regiment similar to famous regiments of the same name that fought in the French armies. Zouaves wore distinctly colorful uniforms that clearly set them apart from their counterparts. At the war's start, Lew Wallace was appointed by Governor Oliver P. Morton as the Adjutant General of Indiana. The son of a former Indiana governor, Wallace was a gifted Hoosier. He was a lawyer, veteran and statesman. All of this long before he would be known as the author of Ben Hur. He resigned his post to command the 11th Indiana Infantry Regiment that was one of the first six regiments raised by the state for the war.

The Battle of Prairie Grove: Civilian Recollections of the Civil War
(Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park) D ecember the 7th, 1862, will long be remembered especially by those of us who lived here and witnessed the battle of Prairie Grove. It was a beautiful, cold, frosty Sunday morning.... About 10 o'clock the cannonading began and about noon war began in earnest. When it seemed everyone would be killed. Mrs. Julia West Pyeatt
Witness to the Battle of Prairie Grove, as a child Julia West was fourteen years old when she viewed the carnage and destruction of the battle at Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Yet, the images of that day and those that followed were vividly etched in her memory forever. She was not the only young spectator at the battle, but she did have one of the best views of the conflict. Looking south from her home on West Hill, Julia beheld the splendor and horror of battle when the men of the Union Army of the Frontier encountered the Confederate Army of the Trans-Mississippi. The southern troops waited atop the heavily-wooded Prairie Grove ridge stretching from the large yellow two-story Borden House on the east end to the small log Morton House on the west end of the ridge. The only rebels visible were those in the clearings around the homes and the Fayetteville-Cane Hill road which bisected the ridge. Footsore Yankees advanced across open corn, wheat, and hay fields in the valley to face the Southern foe. While none of the original houses remain, the valley fields continue to produce hay and wheat. Descendants of the West family still live on their hill. On the east end of the ridge stands the second Borden House; built in 1868 to replace the one burned the day after the battle. Only memories remain as testament to a battle that changed many families' lives forever.
