Civil War Battles and Campaigns
Part 2. Western Theater
[This item added to Web February, 1998.]
Scope and Content Note
The Civil War has been regarded by scholars, students, and history buffs as one of the most important, influential, and compelling events in American history. Individually and collectively, these battle and campaign histories and personal narratives constitute a source of great historical value. These accounts, compiled both during the war and afterward (through 1930), chronicle the "first modern war" and its legacy of "war is hell" and war for a "noble cause." Civil War Battles and Campaigns encompasses the official and literary battle and campaign histories and personal narratives (of specific battles) listed in Charles E. Dornbusch's Military Bibliography of the Civil War, Volume III. UPA has included a large number of items gleaned from a variety of other sources, including the National Union Catalog, other Civil War bibliographies, and Civil War holding lists and card files from various libraries and institutions. Authors of these histories and narratives consist of veteran officers and private soldiers-turned-writers, espousing their perceptions of the battlefield for local veterans organizations and/or small-town publishers; and scholars and "distinguished men" of the era, writing justifications and indictments of the war, its battlefields, barbarism, and memorials. In addition, histories relating to the Western Theater include a variety of accounts on "riverine" warfare. This unique form of warfare, mastered by Union forces, led to the fracturing of the Confederacy along the Tennessee, Mississippi, Cumberland, and Red rivers.

"The American Civil War is one of the most momentous and controversial periods in American history. This site was founded with the intent of collecting copies of or links to as many primary documents from the period of the secession crisis as is reasonably possible, with the goal of shedding light on the causes of secession, hence of the war. There is one document from outside this time frame (Lincoln's Second Inaugural) and while I will consider others, I want to focus the site on primary documents from the time of the secession crisis."

http://www.cr.nps.gov/history/categrs/mili2.htm
Military: Civil War This historical theme focuses on the epic struggle between the North and the South that eliminated both slavery and the right of secession as a consequential political theory. Included are all military, political, and diplomatic activities related to this first of the "total" American wars, and all other political and social activities of this era not related to the war. Subthemes include the following aspects of the Civil War: The Nation Divides, 1860-1861; War in the East; War in the West; Naval Action; and Political and Diplomatic Scene.
Gettysburg National Military Park Located 50 miles northwest of Baltimore, the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was the site of the largest Civil War battle ever waged in the Western Hemisphere. The Battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 and closed two days later with the climactic "Pickett's Charge". It resulted in a Union victory for the Army of the Potomac which successfully turned back the second invasion of the North by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Over 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or captured making it the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It was also a major turning point in the war. Historians have referred to the Battle of Gettysburg as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy." It was the last major effort by Lee to take the fighting out of Virginia and into northern states.

Civil War:
Memorials Series by A.E. Mathews Portrait prints Portfolios
  • "Battle of Pea Ridge, Ark. March 8th. 1862."
An attractive battle scene. Identifications along the bottom, left to right, for: Sigel, Curtis, Osterhaus and Asboth. The images of these generals are the same as on the individual prints from the portrait series, so the same source (photograph) was probably used. This print also appeared with a title in German, cf. below.
  • "Bird's Eye View Of Camp Chase Near Columbus, Ohio."
Shows a Civil War encampment with number keyed captions in bottom margin.
  • "Genl. Sigel in der Schlacht bei Pea Ridge, Ark. Mærz 8, 1862." This is the same print, from the same stones, as "Battle of Pea Ridge" (cf. above), but with the title in German.
  • 1863. 14 x 10. Chromolithograph. [LOC] A Civil War certificate that includes various scenes (including an attack on Fort Sumter in bottom right) and an image of Columbia with an eagle. The certificate states, "This certifies that…." followed by four ruled, blank lines.
Soldiers' Memorials
  • "12 Independent Battery, Ohio Volunteers."
