Becker, Paul J. States Tackle Hate Crimes. State Government News , vol. 44, no. 3, March 2001, pp. 22-24.
Hate crimes laws have been around since 1981, when the Anti-Defamation League drafted a model hate-crime statute that called for enhancing the penalty for crimes motivated by bias and requiring states to keep a database about such crimes. To date, forty states and the District of Columbia have enacted hate-crime laws based on the ADL’s model statute. Hate crime laws generally have two parts, one that identifies the groups protected and one that identifies the offenses. The author, a professor of criminology at Morehead State University, examines the arguments for and against hate-crime laws, noting that they will continue to evolve as they are tested in court. Black, Amy E. African American and White Elites Confront Racial Issues. Society , vol. 39, no. 4, May/June 2002, pp. 39-45.
Amy Black and Stanley Rothman conducted a major study of African American and white elites (The Study of Leadership Characteristics) to find out how they view the United States - as a nation divided by color, or a country moving towards greater integration. Here they present the study's findings - opening with a discussion of some recent works on race relations in the United States. They then assess elite views of the state of race relations in America, comparing and contrasting African American and white leaders views on racial issues, and how black and white elites view one another. The results, they say, provide evidence for both optimism and pessimism in the future of race relations.

No requirement for the major may be taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory. Study Abroad Department policy is that students majoring in sociology generally study abroad only one semester, preferably fall semester of their junior year, and receive credit toward the major for only one course per semester, if that course is approved in advance by the department. To be approved, a course must be one that might be (or is) offered in the Colby sociology department; that is, no course focusing on another country or culture or without specified theoretical content will be granted elective credit toward the major. No core course requirements can be met by coursework taken elsewhere. Students majoring in sociology are urged to seek approval for a range of courses, in advance, to be prepared for possible cancellation of an approved course in any non-Colby-sponsored program abroad.

Now that curb cuts, braille elevator buttons, and closed caption television are commonplace, many people assume that disabled people are now full participants in American society. This book tells a rather different story. It tells how America's disabled mobilized to effect sweeping changes in public policy, not once but twice, and it suggests that the struggle is not yet over. The first edition of From Good Will to Civil Rights traced the changes in federal disability policy, focusing on the development and implementation of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Richard K. Scotch's extensive interviews with policymakers, leaders of the disability rights movement, and other advocates, supplemented the sketchy official history of the legislation with the detailed, behind-the-scenes story, illuminating the role of the disability rights movement in shaping Section 504. Charting the shifts in policy and activist agendas through the 1990s, this new edition surveys the effects and disappointments associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act, passed in 1990, in the context of the continuing movement to secure full civil rights for disabled people.

72. CATHOLIC LEAGUE For Religious And Civil Rights
The Catholic League is the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organization In 1980, Bill was awarded his Ph.D. in sociology from New York University
http://www.catholicleague.org/faqs.htm
What is the Catholic League?
The Catholic League is the nation’s largest Catholic civil rights organization. Founded in 1973 by the late Father Virgil C. Blum, S.J., the Catholic League defends the right of Catholics – lay and clergy alike – to participate in American public life without defamation or discrimination.
Motivated by the letter and the spirit of the First Amendment, the Catholic League works to safeguard both the religious freedom rights and the free speech rights of Catholics whenever and wherever they are threatened.
Is the Catholic League Necessary?
Absolutely. Harvard professor Arthur Schlesinger, Sr. once observed that prejudice against the Catholic Church was "the deepest bias in the history of the American people." Yale professor Peter Viereck commented that "Catholic baiting is the anti-Semitism of the liberals."
And today’s brand of anti-Catholicism is more virulent and more pervasive than ever before in American history. While it is true that Catholics as individuals have made progress in securing their rights, the degree of hostility exhibited against the Catholic Church is appalling. Quite simply, Catholic bashing has become a staple of American society.

Stanford Report, Oct. 8, 2003 Proposition 54 fuels three days of race relations debates on campus BY LISA TREI Slavery and Jim Crow may have been relegated to history but despite the achievements of the civil rights movement racism and inequality continue to pervade American society, speakers argued last week at a national conference co-sponsored by the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity (CCSRE). Ignoring deep fissures caused by racism will only worsen underlying problems in this country, said Harvard sociology Professor Lawrence Bobo. Referring to the words of Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, Bobo stated: "In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race."
