The lesson is designed to assist teachers in the illumination of middle school and high school learners in the workings of Connecticut local and state political institutions. The program’s generic format is designed for teachers to borrow, amend, edit, and enlarge, as they deem necessary, for their classrooms. With adaptations and modifications the activities are appropriate for use in Middle School 7th and 8th grade Social Studies and American History courses and for High School Civics and United States History at all levels. Teachers utilizing the program or designing additional materials should address the Connecticut Framework K-12 Curricular Goals and Standards for Social Studies and the curriculum standards below, taken from the National Council for the Social Studies ten themes. Individual activities should also reflect Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences approach to the development of materials and Benjamin Blooms’ Taxonomy of higher level thinking skills. This interactive writing and discussion activity will engage students in the study of bias as it is used in political debate and decision making, and enable them to evaluate the presentation of material and its importance in making informed decisions. This activity is also a good CAPT practice.
    Class Decision Making

While viewing a CT-N videotaped Legislative session students, in a group setting, will determine how both Democrats and Republicans conceptualize the key points of a bill. The activity is intended to help students understand and evaluate the key points of a piece of legislation and then produce a persuasive product designed to gather support for their argument.
    How To Watch Your Legislators

While viewing a CT-N videotaped Legislative session of a proposed legislative bill, students will identify key arguments between Democrats and Republicans and then as a class reach a consensus (majority rules) position on whether the bill should pass.

    NEW PRESIDENT PLANS CIVICS LESSON

Greco Launches Commission Designed to Teach Americans About Separation of Powers BY STEPHANIE FRANCIS WARD Titled "Civics Education," the study was released Monday morning at a press conference led by Michael S. Greco, who formally became ABA president later in the day. According to the telephone survey, 82 percent of the 1,002 adults polled felt that separation of powers is important, but only 45 percent correctly identified the concept. And only 48 percent of respondents correctly identified the role of the federal judiciary. The poll was conducted in July by Harris Interactive. In addition, only 55 percent of respondents correctly identified the three branches of government, and 36 percent could not identify the principle of checks and balances. The poll shows that most Americans understand that different branches of government have distinct roles, Greco said, but the numbers also demonstrate a need for more public education on how the principles work.

Comparing Second Step objectives and the corresponding objectives and competencies of Terra Nova

Recently, many of you have asked about setting up a "peace corner" in your classrooms. Following are some questions and answers about the concept. If you already have a peace corner in your classroom, please e-mail (preferable) or fax (615) 884-5004 me with information that you'd like to share and we'll run it in the next edition of the newsletter. Such information might include who, what, why, and where or it could consist of anecdotes of your experiences.
What is a "Peace Corner?" A peace corner is a little spot in your room, as free as possible from distractions, that is setup specifically to promote classroom peace and harmony.
What happens in a peace corner and who goes there? The purpose of such a spot is to provide a quiet place where students can go to cool down, reflect on their behavior or participate in a negotiation or mediation. Students who use the corner are those who need to take a "time-out," either verbal or written for disruptive behavior; those who need to get away to cool down from a confrontation or those who need to negotiate with a fellow student or participate in a mediation.

By Kris Axtman Settled by the Payaya Indians more than 300 years ago, San Antonio was originally named Yanaguana, or "place of refreshing waters," because of the richness of the resource. In those abundant waters, local developers recently saw the potential for emerald golf greens and 800 permanent jobs in recreation. But here, where water has always been fiercely protected, the idea of building a huge golfer's paradise atop the Edwards Aquifer was controversial from the get-go.
