It is the invention of Carole Smart. Cut a number of large size circles (big enough to stand on) out of various colors of construction paper and have them laminated. The students remove their shoes before this activity in order to preserve the circles for future use. While the music is playing, students move from circle to circle. (They cannot stay on one circle; they must keep moving as long as the music is playing.) When the music stops, the teacher calls out a color in the target language. Anyone standing on that color is eliminated. This continues until there is only one color left. The different colors are then redistributed (equal to the number of remaining participants) and the cycle is repeated until there is only one person standing.

Problem Statement
There is a need for teaching culture when learning a foreign language. In accordance with the Colorado Model Content Standards (#2), students need to develop an understanding of the cultures in which the language is spoken and the ability to function in an appropriate manner. The students will gain a better understanding of the language they are learning by studying the target language's culture. A problem in teaching culture in a classroom setting is the limited resources and realia in providing a real life effect of the cultual aspect. A possible answer is to use the Internet with its vast resources and technological capabilities to bring the cultural aspect to life.
Analysis of Situation
The student population will consist of Spanish Level II students. This assignment will be worked on outside of class, and there will be specific times the students may access the labs at school if they do not have an accessible computer at home. From previous online lessons the students have the hardware accessibility and the necessary Internet skills to complete the assignment. The main objective is for the students to gain a general understanding of the Battle of Puebla: Cinco de Mayo. Each student will complete an online lesson that will contain three activities to complete regarding Cinco de Mayo within a specific timeframe. When all activities are complete the students will participate in a classroom discussion regarding what they learned about Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo: Celebrating the Triumph
of Freedom
By Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (OH-15) On May 5, 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza led a group of four thousand Mexican soldiers into victory against a French army that was better armed and twice as large. This battle, the Battle of Puebla, and Cinco de Mayo continue to serve as a testament of courage and determination to freedom loving people everywhere. President Abraham Lincoln, like the people of Mexico, understood that freedom often came at a high price. He told the world that American troops would come to the aid of Mexico if the French did not leave the country and respect the principles of liberty. The Mexican leader Benito Juarez and Lincoln saw eye to eye when it came to securing freedom and ensuring peace. Juarez once said, “Between individuals as between nations, respect for the rights of others is peace.” All good relationships are built on respect and such is the case of the relationship between the United States and Mexico. The high esteem that has grown between the two nations is largely because of our shared values. First and foremost, Americans and Mexicans place a high value on the faith that sustains us during the peaks and valleys of our lives. Both nations also place high importance on family and community because this is where we pass on traditions and teach character and morals. And finally, both nations value the right to freedom.

Mexico: Meet the Neighbors!
Mexico and the United States share a border and a history. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by introducing your students to their neighbors to the south! Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla , in which a few thousand ill-equipped Mexican citizens defeated a much larger army of highly trained French soldiers. Although the victory did not result in the immediate end of French occupation, many historians believe it indirectly affected the outcome of the American Civil War and led to Mexico's eventual independence. Today, people in both the United States and Mexico celebrate Cinco de Mayo the Fifth of May as a day of freedom and goodwill. A brief description of each activity appears below. Using Information Technology to Foster Cultural Knowledge and Awareness:
An Interview with Award-Winning Teacher Cheryl Cox Larry Miller

Previous articles in the International Perspectives department of Reading Online have focused on projects and people outside of the United States; however, many educators within the United States have a deep interest in multiculturalism and in the role information technology (IT) can play in enhancing knowledge about and understanding of different cultures. In this article, I interview one such educator Cheryl Cox, a Grade 2 teacher who created the Web site for the Hatch Elementary School in Hatch, New Mexico. I first learned of Cheryl's work more than a year ago through participation in RTEACHER, the listserv associated with the International Reading Association's print journal The Reading Teacher and moderated by Don Leu, a professor at the University of Connecticut. One of the unique features of RTEACHER is the Miss Rumphius Award, Hatch Elementary School Web site . When I visited the site I was particularly impressed by this WebQuest , which combines subject matter content with the arts and language arts. I was so enamoured with the manner in which Cheryl used IT as a conduit for learning that I shared the Web site with the preservice teachers in my courses at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada. Their positive response supported my belief that Cinco de Mayo indeed was a useful resource that transcended cultures and borders.
