Part 1: The History of the Holiday Cinco de Mayo celebrates a victory by the Mexican Army over the French Army in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It was a great victory because it was unexpected. France at that time was still very powerful and had many troops in Mexico. Why were French troops in Mexico? Let's go back a few years. Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1810. But the Mexican War with the United States and the Mexican Civil War almost entirely wiped out the Mexican Treasury. During these wars, Mexico had borrowed heavily from European countries, including France. In the early 1860s, Mexico stopped paying France back. France's answer was to invade Mexico.

From the site:
"After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." (Internet: Pasmanick, 1992) In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of landthe land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader.
In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides.

I have been teaching with music since 1965, and have been formally researching the use of music by regular classroom teachers to teach language, culture, and other classroom topics since 1985. The greater part of my research and creative productivity has gone into this focus since then resulting in grants, exhibits, creative works, volumes of instructional materials, conference presentations, articles, and many presentations in schools. Since I am not a member of any of the language minority groups that I serve, I have developed a strategy which allows me a role in these communities: music. I am very visible and accepted as a musician. I believe that the time I spend tuning pianos composing , performing with various instruments in *musical groups, and story telling in the schools contributes to my aesthetic perspective , and my ability to connect to the community and the local students. Tips For Surviving Cinco De Mayo
It's time once again to pretend we're Mexican... Cinco de Mayo is here, and contrary to popular belief, it is NOT Mexican Independence Day. It is, in fact, a celebration of Fernando Valenzuela's debut with Major League Baseball in 1980. But if THAT isn't a reason to party, what is?
In keeping with a proud St. Patty's Day tradition, white boys the nation over will try to convince people that they're Mexican, and if THAT isn't an amusing picture, you need your sense of humor checked. Being Mexican is tough work, however, and we at prolefeed are here to help with some pointers to get you through it safe enough to see Seis de Mayo.
  • Do not spring for top-shelf tequila on Cinco de Mayo. Good tequila is best enjoyed in a quiet setting, where you have plenty of time to savor the unique flavors of the agave plant. What you will be doing on this day is more along the lines of shot-for-shot competitions, licking it off the flat stomachs of cute co-eds, and eventually, barfing it up in a parking lot somewhere. The French don't drink the good wine on Bastille Day, and neither should you. Cheap and nasty is the way to go here.
Do not expect to be served in anything short of a reasonable time if you decide to go to a Mexican restaurant for Cinco de Mayo. It's a stupid thing to do. I've done it myself a couple of times, some of my friends are doing it today, and it's STILL a stupid thing to do. If you show up at 4:00 in the afternoon, you can expect to be seated sometime in the 5:00 hour. Granted, it's the 5:00 AM hour the next day, but still. To that effect...

ANTI-IMMIGRANT GROUP STAGES PROTEST ON CINCO DE MAYO
By Jeremy Kohler
Of the Post-Dispatch
Illegal aliens should be sent home, the United States should guard its southern border, and a freeze should be placed on immigration, 30 demonstrators [ There were actually about fifty - Webmaster's ed. ] said Monday night outside the West County shopping center.
Members of the Council of Conservative Citizens said they were educating motorists on Manchester Road about how the world exploits loose U.S. borders to the detriment of Americans. Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday, offered the group an excuse to put its cross hairs on illegal Mexicans, members said.
"Our open border with Mexico has become a conduit for drugs and unskilled workers who take jobs (for less pay) and force incomes to ratchet downward," said organizer Earl Holt of St. Louis, who wore a sombrero.
The difference between the immigration of a century ago and that of today is that previous waves brought Europeans "with whom we share a common cultural ethos, rather than the dregs of the Third World who have turned their own countries into cesspools and will do that to our country if we let them," Holt said.
