May 5th - Cinco de Mayo Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken as Mexican independence day, but, in fact, the 5th of May commemorates the day that the small Mexican army defeated the large invading French army in 1862. Mexico declared independence from Spain in 1810 (though it took a while for Spain to finally get the hint). In 1862, France, led by Napoleon III and in an attempt to capture land near the United States, decided to invade Mexico and take it for themselves. France hated the United States and was hoping that they could then move on to take U.S. land (which they thought should be pretty easy since America was preoccupied with their own Civil War at the time). The French also thought that they would have no problem invading a small country like Mexico. After defeating Mexico, their plan was to supply aid to the Confederate army and thus help split the United States in two – that way they would have an easier time fighting against an America that was divided against itself.

A Brief History of Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo which means Fifth of May in Spanish is a celebration commemorating a single historic victory of the small, ill-equipped Mexican army over the French force at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. However, the French ultimately conquered Mexico ruling the country until 1867, at which time they withdrew due to continued resistance of the Mexican people and pressure from the United States. You may wish to include some activity handouts, such as maps, puzzles or coloring pages.

Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, is a national holiday for Mexicosecond only to September 16, Independence Day. It was on this day, in 1862, that a small group of poorly trained Mexican peasants, under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, bravely and fiercely fought for their freedom against a regiment of 6,000 French soldiers under the command of Napoleon III.
Historical Background
"After Mexico gained it's independence from Spain in 1821, it faced internal power struggles that left it in a volatile state of rebellion and instability for years." (Internet: Pasmanick, 1992) In 1846, the Mexican government, under the dictator Santa Anna, went to war with the United States. As an outcome of that war, Mexico lost a large amount of landthe land we now know as Texas. In 1854, Juan Alvarez and his troops led a successful revolt to drive Santa Anna out of power. One of Alvarez's strongest supporters was a man by the name of Benito Juarez, a Zapotec Indian leader. In 1855, Juarez became the minister of Justice under the new regime and issued two new controversial laws. One denied the right of the church and military courts to try civilian cases and the other made the sale and distribution of church lands legal. Many people disagreed with these laws and for three years a civil war raged between the two sides.

So, where is a GOOD restaurant?
A welcome addition to the very hip northern section of “Quinta Avenida” (5th Ave.) in Playa del Carmen is JOHNNY CARIO’S new restaurant. We caught up with the owners John Gray and George Cairo for a chat about their history and an up-date on their new location. George and John joined forces in 1989, having first crossed paths at the Ritz- Carlton’s Laguna Niguel property. At the ripe old age of 18 John had already traveled extensively and worked with some of the finest chefs in the world. George had been in the restaurant business for years and wanted to open a place of his own. After they both absorbed everything the Ritz could teach them George encouraged John to team up with him and move to the Yucatan to open the first Johnny Cairo’s. Since Cancun was already saturated with restaurants they decided to open their new venue in the small fishing village of Puerto Morelos, @15 minutes south of Cancun. It was a recipe for success and soon became the toast of the town. Travelers were blown away by the fantastic flavors of special dishes created by John, and the impeccable service and personal touch provided by George and the staff.

Fiesta Ranchera
Music will highlight Falfurrias celebration By Brendan Walsh
Caller-Times
Around area parks, in local taverns and at countless backyard barbecues, South Texans will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend.
The Fiesta Ranchera celebration in Falfurrias is held in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo, though it won't be the only focus of the event. There will be carnival rides, pinata-bashing games, a Saturday parade, a horseshoe tournament, bingo and a sock hop. Those now participating in any of those activities will no doubt want to check out the plethora of food booths offering standard South Texas carnival fare.
Part of the celebration of Latino culture will be conjunto music Friday and Saturday night, ballet folklorico on Friday, and the traditional rancheras music of Amanda Hoffsetter on Friday and Saturday.
Cinco de Mayo's roots
Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican victory against the French in the town of Puebla on May 5, 1862. At that time, France was in the process of invading Mexico because of a dispute over debts owed by the Mexican government. General Ignacio Zaragoza, who was born near what is now the town of Goliad, assembled an army of campesinos, or field workers, to stave off the invasion. Though the French captured Mexico City the next summer and Mexico lost the war, the victory at Puebla is still considered a point of pride.

Remarks at a Cinco de Mayo Celebration
May 5, 1992 I was pleased earlier to see Jose Nino and Raul Yzaguirre, two American leaders who do so much for strong relations between Mexico and the United States. And, of course, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate President Carlos Salinas for preserving this remarkable historical landmark and for creating the institute to strengthen the ties of friendship between our two nations. Relations between the United States and Mexico are tremendously important to both our countries. It's exciting to note, and I would note and I'd say with some pride, that relations between Mexico and the United States have never been better than they are now. And I take great pride in that, as I say, but I commend especially Carlos Salinas for the role that he's played in strengthening this special friendship that benefits both our peoples. The Mexican President has done an awful lot to hold out his hand to us, to emphasize the importance to Mexico of the U.S.-Mexican relationship. And he's done a wonderful job. I want to thank all of you for letting me share this special day, a day made even more meaningful because 1992 marks 500 years of Hispanic heritage in this hemisphere. And this heritage is a wonderful, rich tapestry that our kids, Barbara, and I were lucky enough to first experience during our west Texas years. I remember our Cinco de Mayo festivities out there, exploring the ties between our countries, ties of family, friendship, and faith. So, my exposure to Cinco de Mayo started in the year 1949 out in west Texas, and it's been a part of us ever since.
