Cinco de Mayo What is Cinco de Mayo? The holiday of Cinco De Mayo, The 5th Of May , commemorates the victory of the Mexicans over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, but is also celebrated in other parts of the country and in U.S.cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day , which is actually September 16. For the most part, the holiday of Cinco de Mayo is more of a regional holiday in Mexico, celebrated most vigorously in the state of Puebla. Though there is recognition of the holiday throughout the country with different levels of enthusiasm, it's nothing like that found in Puebla.
Celebrating Cinco de Mayo has become increasingly popular along the U.S.-Mexico border and in parts of the U.S. that have a high population of people with a Mexican heritage. In these areas the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food, music, beverage and customs unique to Mexico.
Commercial interests in the United States and Mexico have also been successful in promoting the holiday, with products and services focused on Mexican food, beverages and festivities, with music playing a more visible role as well. Several cities throughout the U.S. hold parades and concerts during the week following up to May 5th, so that Cinco de Mayo is becoming a bigger holiday north of the border than to the south, and adopted into the holiday calendar of more and more people every year.

(CBS) If you're looking for an excuse to throw a Mexican-inspired fiesta, next week is your chance.
Thursday is Cinco de Mayo, the Mexican holiday that's become increasingly popular in the U.S.
Scott Linquist, executive chef of Dos Caminos, prepares authentic Mexican cuisine with a modern touch in the New York City restaurant.
The Saturday Early Show asked him to prepare a special party menu for eight people on an entertaining budget of $80. The menu includes Guacamole and Salsa with Homemade Corn Chips; Chorizo, Potato and Goat Cheese Sopes; Plantain and Black Bean Empanadas; Roasted Pork Tamales; Bunuelos with Vanilla Honey; and White Wine Sangria. Linquist has loved Mexican food since he was young. He was born and raised in Los Angeles and had access to great, flavorful Mexican food. Linquist is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. He worked at Boulevard in San Francisco, and Lutece and Gotham, both in New York City. Eventually, Linquist returned to California to cook Mexican-influenced food at the Border Grill.

Cinco de Mayo: a Mexican-American Holiday
By Jennifer S., BeBeyond.com USA I am writing this column on May 5th, or "Cinco de Mayo" (the 5th of May, in Spanish), a holiday with an interesting history. By the time you read it, the day will be past, but at least you'll know a little more about it in case you come across Cinco de Mayo again in the future. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the defeat of the French army by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. The 1850s and 60s were a very chaotic time for the country of Mexicothe nation had gained its independence from Spain in 1810, but was then engaged in external and internal war for the next several decades, leaving its economy in ruins. Mexico was unable to pay the foreign debts that it owed, so Napoleon III, emperor of France at the time, sent troops to Mexico to set up a government there. Initially, Napoleon III sent about 6,500 soldiers: they encountered strong resistance from the Mexicans of the Puebla region of Mexico, and were decisively

Cinco de Mayo Games and Activities
Remember, most games can be adapted to all ages of children with a bit of creative thinking. Also, if you choose to play a game that requires teams, and you have an odd number of children, one person will need to go twice. Ask for a volunteer and if one doesn't surface you might want to leave it up to the team to choose who they think will be the fastest.
Benito Juarez Says
How To Play: Before playing explain to the children that Benito Juárez, a Zapotec Indian, was born and raised in extreme poverty. With hard work, determination, and strong love for his country, Juárez became the president of Mexico and defeated the French, who had occupied the country for five years. Played similar to Simon Says. The player up is "Benito Juarez". Player will say "Benito Juarez says hop on one foot". The children will hop on one foot. Player will say "Stop". The children are to keep hopping on one foot until player says "Benito Juarez says stop". Repeat for additional activities such as take one baby step forward, step backwards, turn around, sit down. Sometimes Benito Juarez will say "Benito Juarez says" and sometimes he won't. It's a fun game to play with young children.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Every year, May 5th is reserved for the biggest and baddest Cinco de Mayo fiesta that anyone has ever seen. The bar crowds get larger, the party decorations multiply and become more colorful, and the margaritas get tastier. With all of this partying happening, we tend to forget why we're celebrating. On the 5th day of May, in 1862, the Mexicans defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. The holiday Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration and celebration of the victory of the smaller Mexican army over the larger and more modern French army. Although it is celebrated and recognized as a holiday in all areas of Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated most heartily in the state of Puebla where the French were defeated. It is, however, becoming more common to see the celebration stretch to other states within the U.S. and along the border of Mexico where many people with Mexican ancestry are living.

Celebration's coming of age
Articulo en el Periodico TriCity Herald
publicado el 2 de Mayo del 2005 By Andrew Sirocchi, Herald staff writer Vanessa Gomez tugged the hem of her quinceanera gown level with her high heels to keep the rose-dotted dress from hitting the ground and leaned to the side while her grandmother fixed one of her straps.
The fitting capped a busy few weeks for Gomez, trying on dresses and formal wear.
"I never had my quinceanera," said the 19-year-old recent transplant from Los Angeles, adding that her family didn't adopt the Latino tradition of celebrating a girl's 15th birthday as a day of blossoming into adulthood.
On Saturday, she'll get another chance.
This year, during Pasco's Cinco de Mayo celebration, Gomez and a half-dozen other girls will commemorate their womanhood during a first-ever fashion show at the event.
Not only will the festival celebrate the day when a ragtag army of Mexican peasants and farmers beat the French in the May 5, 1862, Battle of Puebla. It also will celebrate 15 consecutive years that the cultural event has been held in the Tri-Cities.
"Cultural awareness is part of Cinco de Mayo, not only for the Latino community but also for other cultures," said Gloria Garcia, who has helped organize the Tri-Cities' celebration for nine years.
