Reformed Churches
The name given to Protestant bodies which adopted the tenets of Zwingli and, later, the doctrinal principles of Calvin . This distinctive title originated in 1561 at the colloquy of Poissy. Initiated in Switzerland, the movement from which the Churches sprang gained ground at an early date in France, some German states, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Hungary, and Poland. Later, emigration and colonization secured a still wider diffusion of the Calvinistic system. Some of the denominations which adopted it go to-day under a special name, e.g. Presbyterianism: they receive separate treatment in this work. Others became national churches and are mentioned under the name of the country in which they exist. (See Z WINGLIANISM C ALVINISM R EFORMATION ... RMINIANISM ; H OLLAND ; N ETHERLANDS ; H UGUENOTS ; S COTLAND ; etc.). The following bodies are here considered: I. UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA AND HOMOSEXUALITY Click Here to Visit our Sponsors. Depending on how church size is defined, the United Church of Canada is either the largest or next to largest Protestant denomination: About 3.1 million Canadians identify themselves with the United Church of Canada The church reports 684,000 confirmed members. Fewer (about 2.2 million) Canadians identify themselves as Anglicans, However, the church reports 737,000 confirmed members more than the United Church. This is the most liberal of the larger Protestant denominations in Canada. It is exceeded in size only by the Roman Catholic church . It was formed in 1925 by a merger of most congregations of the Association of Congregational Churches in Canada , the Methodist Church and the Presbyterian Church in Canada . Some Presbyterian congregations remained part of a separate mainline religious organization; some Methodists split off to form the very conservative Free Methodist church. From its birth, it has had to accommodate a diversity of theological beliefs. It has had a history of tackling publicly the really tough social issues. Some cynics might say that they have a continual urge to shoot themselves in the foot, or to form a circular firing squad. It can be argued that they lose membership whenever they enter into one of these debates. But they have also gained members, partly because of the respect that Canadians have for the Church's courage, openness, and inclusiveness. Less courageous liberal and mainline denominations often follow where the United Church has led.

John Ashcroft
Much like the Nazis in Casablanca, John Ashcroft enjoys a good song as long as people remember their place. Even before September 11 , Attorney General John Ashcroft was a disaster waiting to happen. An evangelical fanatic with an agenda, Ashcroft was a man with a dream, or perhaps we should call it a vision, or perhaps it would be more accurately described as an undeniable mandate from God. After sitting Senator Ashcroft lost his seat to a dead man, Mel Carnahan the first time in history this has ever happened President George W Bush decided to elevate Ashcroft from his indignity. The collective cringe could be heard all across America, from women, gays, blacks, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, supporters of civil rights, doctors, people who enjoy having sex, Methodists... And if there's anything worse than an attorney general with an apocalyptic messiah complex, it's an attorney general with an apocalyptic messiah complex at a time when infidels have declared a holy war on America.

Religion and Organ and Tissue Donation
If you save one life, it is as though you save the world.
What follows is an overview of the positions and statements of various religions with regard to organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
Organ and tissue donation is viewed as an act of neighborly love and charity by these denominations. They encourage all members to support donation as a way of helping others.
Amish
The Amish will consent to transplantation if they believe it is for the well being of the transplant recipient. John Hostetler, world-renowned authority on Amish religion and professor of anthropology at Temple University in Philadelphia, says in his book, Amish Society, "The Amish believe that since God created the human body, it is God who heals. However, nothing in the Amish understanding of the Bible forbids them from using modern medical services, including surgery, hospitalization, dental work, anesthesia, blood transfusions or immunization."
Assembly of God
The Church has no official policy regarding organ and tissue donation. The decision to donate is left up to the individual. Donation is highly supported by the denomination.

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH IN SCOTLAND
Introduction
Reformed and Presbyterian, national but free - that in a nutshell is the modern Church of Scotland. How it grew into its present shape is a story over 1500 years old... The early years
The Middle Ages

Reformation

Covenanters
...
The Church of Scotland today
The early years
As long ago as about 400AD St Ninian began the first large-scale Christian mission to Scotland from Whithorn in the far south-west, converting many Pictish people to the new faith, long before Scotland was a single country.
Iona Abbey, on the Island of Iona - credited as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland The great heroic figure of the early story is St Columba, the Irish prince-in-exile who crossed to the island of Iona off the west coast of Scotland later in the fifth century. He established a community of monks who spread the Gospel far and wide through Scotland and the north of England.

Marine Gen. Peter Pace, vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
(CBS/AP) A top Pentagon general has requested an investigation of his church speeches casting the war on terrorism in religious terms, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday.
Several Islamic and religious freedom groups and foreign officials criticized Army Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin last week when reports surfaced of his comments during several speeches at evangelical Christian churches. Boykin said the enemy in the war on terrorism was Satan, that God had put President George W. Bush in the White House and called one Muslim Somali warlord an idol-worshipper. As CBS News Nationsal Security Correspondent David Martin reported last week, Boykin had raised eyebrows with remarks he had made to church groups.
