Establishment Clause:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..." The Establishment Clause has generally come to mean that government cannot authorize a church, cannot pass laws that aid or favor one religion over another, cannot pass laws that favor religious belief over non belief, cannot force a person to profess a belief. In short, government must be neutral toward religion and cannot be entangled with any religion.
Religion in public schools
Minersville v. Gobitis, 310 U.S. 586 (1940) - Supreme Court rules that a public school may require students to salute the flag and pledge allegiance even if it violates their religious scruples. West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) - Court overturns Gobitis but is broader in its scope. No one can be forced to salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance if it violates the individual's conscience. McCollum v. Board of Education

The essay that formerly was on this page was published as a part of a chapter of my The Ethics of Belief: A Bio-Historical Approach, 2 vols. (Lima, OH: CSS Publishing Co., 2001). A brief summary follows.
The question of religion and politics is not the same as the question of church and state. Failure to make this distinction results in confusion. The problem of church and state has to do with institutions and the spheres of action that are appropriate for each. Here the concept of separation is valid. Thorny problems arise in two particular areas. 1. The first involves trying to steer between avoiding an establishment of religion and permitting its free exercise. Prayer in public schools and is among the most contentious. 2. A second range of problems arises when religious belief and practice conflict with secular law. The problem of religion and politics defines another set of issues. Church and state deals with the relationship of institutions that are independent of each other. Religion and politics has to do with two spheres of activities in the life of the same persons. Citizens who belong to religious groups are also members of the secular society, and this dual association generates complications. Religious beliefs have moral and social implications, and it is appropriate for people of faith to express these through their activities as citizens in the political order. The fact that ethical convictions are rooted in religious faith does not disqualify them from the political realm. However, they do not have secular validity merely because they are thought by their exponents to be religiously authorized. They must be argued for in appropriate social and political terms in harmony with national values.

WCC and UN general secretaries discuss Iraq, Israel/Palestine, role of religion Annan welcomes proposal to mark International Day of Peace with prayer
Free photo available, see below

Churches' concern over the situation in Iraq and the Israel/Palestine conflict, the role of religion in conflict, and working relations between the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the United Nations Organization were the focus of a first meeting between the UN secretary-general Kofi Annan and the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia. Annan welcomed Kobia's initiative to invite the Council's member churches to mark the International Day of Peace with prayer services.
This first meeting between the two general secretaries took place at UN headquarters in New York yesterday afternoon in a friendly atmosphere despite pressures created by the killing that morning of the head of Iraq's US-appointed Governing Council, Ezzedine Salim.
"On behalf of WCC member churches, I expressed admiration to Annan for his leadership role at a time when multilateralism is threatened and under attack," Kobia said after the meeting. The UN secretary-general acknowledged that both organizations' agendas are intertwined, and praised the partnership between them.

International Religious Freedom Report 2004
Released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
The Constitution provides for freedom of religion, and the government generally respects this right in practice. Government respect for religious freedom has improved. The Ministry of Justice and Religion relaxed administrative controls on church activities and the formation of new churches by established denominations. However, the Government remains sensitive to criticism by religious groups. The generally amicable relationship among religions in society contributed to religious freedom. The U.S. Government discusses religious freedom issues with the Government during periodic visits to the country as part of its overall policy to promote human rights. Section I. Religious Demography Foreign missionary groups operate in the country, both on Bioko Island and the mainland. These include Baptists, Seventh-day Adventists, Assemblies of God, and Jehovah's Witnesses. Nondenominational evangelical Christian groups are also present. Section II. Status of Religious Freedom

The Archbishop of Brisbane, Phillip Aspinall; Dr Andrew McGowan, Director of the Theological School of Trinity College. Program Transcript This week we’re previewing the General Synod of the Anglican Church in Australia that will be held in Perth in October. Women bishops is one of the main issues on the agenda, and we’ll be speaking to the Archbishop of Brisbane, Phillip Aspinall. When the Anglican church holds its General Synod in Perth next month, high on the agenda will be the question of whether it’s time for Australian Anglicans to have their own women bishops. The first women priests were ordained in Australia in 1992. If women bishops gets the nod, there will also be the question of what to do about those Anglicans who feel they can’t accept such leadership from a woman. Should the church allow flying or floating bishops, to give those people separate oversight? I spoke to Archbishop Phillip Aspinall late yesterday, and began by asking whether he thought the General Synod in October looked like being more fiery and interesting than usual.

M any states were as explicit about the need for a thriving religion as Congress was in its thanksgiving and fast day proclamations. The Massachusetts Constitution of 1780 declared, for example, that "the happiness of a people, and the good order and preservation of civil government, essentially depend on piety, religion and morality." The states were in a stronger position to act upon this conviction because they were considered to possess "general" powers as opposed to the limited, specifically enumerated powers of Congress. Congregationalists and Anglicans who, before 1776, had received public financial support, called their state benefactors "nursing fathers" (Isaiah 49:23). After independence they urged the state governments, as "nursing fathers," to continue succoring them. Knowing that in the egalitarian, post-independence era, the public would no longer permit single denominations to monopolize state support, legislators devised "general assessment schemes." Religious taxes were laid on all citizens, each of whom was given the option of designating his share to the church of his choice. Such laws took effect in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire and were passed but not implemented in Maryland and Georgia.

Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as presented in the New Testament writings of his early followers. It is the world's largest religion, with an estimated 2.1 billion adherents, or about one-third of the total world population. It shares with Judaism the Hebrew Bible (historically called by Christians the Old Testament ), and for this reason is sometimes called an Abrahamic religion along with Judaism and Islam Christianity encompasses numerous religious traditions that widely vary by culture and place, as well as many diverse beliefs and sects. It is usually represented as being divided into four main branches, over the past two millennia:
  • The Catholic Communion (includes the largest coherent group, the Roman Catholic Church , including Eastern Catholics , representing over one billion baptized members), Eastern Christianity (includes the second-largest coherent group, the

HOME Religious Leaders Statement on Fuel Economy On November 20, 2002, senior religious leaders from the National Council of Churches In Christ, the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life and the Evangelical Environmental Network gathered in Detroit, Michigan to release a joint statement calling on Ford, General Motors and Chrysler corporations to increase the fuel economy of their auto fleet:
    "Let There Be Light"
AN OPEN LETTER TO U.S. AUTOMOBILE COMPANIES William Clay Ford, Jr.
    Chairman and CEO
Ford Motor Company G. Richard Wagoner, Jr.

    CEO
Chrysler Corporation With this letter, we seek to open a new conversation about cars and their impact upon God’s creation and God’s children on earth. We write to inform you of a gathering movement in the American religious community to establish increased vehicle fuel economy as a moral imperative for global sustainability, security, and justice. As we raise these issues in our councils, pulpits and pews, we seek candid discussions with all stakeholders to serve the common good. We are deeply distressed by evidence that our reliance on oil, so central to the operation of the automobile, is warming the planet, contributing to the causes of war, and increasing the burden on the poor.
