The Churches, Religion, and Politics after 1989
Church and the state in Hungary after 1945
With the end of the Second World War, it became clear that fundamental changes in the position of the Churches were to be expected, specifically, the separation of Church and State and restrictions on the role of the Churches in education. The Churches were aware of the necessity for these changes and expressed their willingness to comply. The Communist regime, however, perceived the Churches as political enemies it must vanquish rather than as partners. Twelve days after the Lutheran Church signed this agreement, the Primate Cardinal József Mindszenty was arrested (see the excerpt from Árpád Pünkösti’s book on pp. 86–98). Next came the persecution of the Catholic prelates. The Catholic hierarchy made this more difficult, since the Communists had no say in the appointment of bishops or priests. To overcome this problem, they tried to break the Church by arrests, internment, and even executions. The question of schools was resolved in 1948, before the Mindszenty trial. Except for a few secondary schools, every Catholic school was nationalized. The ultimate goal was to suppress religious activity completely and to eradicate the Churches within a foreseeable future. Thence-forth, the state set out to destroy the social basis of Churches by means of administrative measures and intimidation. They sought to keep the young away from the Churches and from religious activity; religious instruction was closely supervised and severely restricted. Teachers were forbidden to attend church services, the personal data of every student attending religious instruction, of every one who underwent confirmation or who married in church, had to be reported to state agencies.

Our History On Monday, April 29, 1968, the Uniting Conference of The United Methodist Church authorized the formation of a General Commission on Religion and Race [the General Commission] to succeed the Commission on Inter-jurisdictional Relations, with responsibility for overseeing the mergers of racial conferences with geographical conferences. The principal task of the General Commission was to ensure that The United Methodist Church was indeed a church wherein "all persons, without regard to race, color, national origin, or economic condition, shall be eligible to attend its worship services, to participate in its programs, and when they take the appropriate vows, to be admitted into its membership." This initial task remains the primary concern of the General Commission as it enters its eighth quadrennium of service. Since its inception, the membership of the General Commission has been multi-racial and multi-ethnic and it identified as its responsibility the advocacy for all racial and ethnic minority groups within the Church. It supported the activities of the national ethnic caucuses and facilitated inter-ethnic consultations. It also monitored and evaluated the programs and services, the structures and the employment profiles of the general agencies. In its report to the 1972 General Conference, the General Commission noted "there is no non-White person serving as chief executive of any regular board or agency of The United Methodist Church. It is also disheartening to observe the near total absence of other ethnic minority persons in staff positions in our boards and agencies."

Religion ...But 85 percent of Finns are Evangelical-Lutherans Finnish religiousness has been aptly described as "belonging without attending," as most Finns do not participate in organized church ceremonies as regularly as others, including Americans. The role of the church in Finnish life is reflected more in annual traditions, such as Christmas and Easter, and also during important family milestones including baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and funerals.
Nevertheless, there are still many people who consider themselves members of a particular denomination, including the 4.4 million people (85 percent of the population) who belong to the Evangelical-Lutheran Church. Although this is a vast majority of the population, other denominations/beliefs are represented, such as: The Orthodox Church of Finland (1.1 percent of population), and Baptists, Methodists, Jews, and Islams (1 percent of the population combined). Thirteen percent of the Finnish population does not belong to any religious group.
Unlike most American public schools, Finnish schools provide religious teaching, which is dependent upon the confession of the majority of the students in each school. If at least three students belong to a particular denomination, their parents or guardians can demand instruction in that confession.

    http://www.parliament.ge/CULTURE/GENINF/Cultur.html
General The richness of Georgian architecture is fully manifested in the existence of numerous churches. The history of this field of architecture is connected to the development of Georgian domed churches with a square central bay and four arms around it forming a cross . The versatile folk architecture is also worth being pointed out here. The Darbazi type of dwelling was typical to the Eastern regions, whereas the Oda type prevailed in the West of Georgia. Fortresses and towers were widespread in the mountainous regions. Georgian folk music, which has been evolving over three millennia, contributed particularly to the world culture. One of the most peculiar features of it is itss free polyphonic composition (2,5 or 4 voices). Georgian school of painting and icon painting, frequently exhibited in and outside of the country is also worth being pointed out here. The unique ancient frescoes reveal the specifics, traditions and skills of their creators. Georgian literature, especially poetry, is of non-less importance than the above-mentioned fields of culture. Georgian theatre and cinema are well known abroad. Even the "iron curtain", which had separated Georgia from the rest of the world. could not prevent it from recognising those. Georgian opera singers and musicians are also well-known overseas.

    Religious Confession
General Information Confession is the popular name for the Christian Sacrament of Penance or Reconciliation recognized by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches. The rite consists in the acknowledgment of sins to a priest, who grants absolution in the name of God. Its biblical basis is found in the action of Jesus forgiving sins (Mark 2) and his commissioning of the Apostles to forgive sins (John 20:22-23). Essential to every confession is an inner conversion of the heart, with sorrow for sin and intent to lead a new life. In the Orthodox Church, confession is usually required before the reception of Communion. Since 1215, Roman Catholics have been required to confess their sins annually if they are in serious sin. A new Roman Catholic rite was introduced in 1973, which places greater emphasis on the community and its place in reconciliation. Some other Christian churches, such as the Lutheran and the Anglican, provide for individual confession on request, but general confession during public worship, and individual confession directly to God in private, is more characteristic of Protestantism. General Essay on the Religions of Polynesia
The peoples of the thousands of islands which make up Polynesia arrived in the Pacific around 1500 Before the Common Era, spreading out from early settlements in Tonga, Samoa and the Marquesas Islands to populate other island groups. Over three millenia up to the present day they developed their own societies and languages, yet retained many similarities. Tribal life was centred on an area of sacred space (heiau, malae, marae, me'ae) - usually a simple open-air area marked out by stones, perhaps including a shrine or altar area where offerings were made to deities and spirits, and where images of deities may be held. Ritual included song, dance, chanting of sacred formulae, and in the tropical islands the drinking of 'ava/kava. While most of the functionaries were male, women played an essential role in the rites of bestowal or removal of kabu/tapu/tabu, sacredness, as the female body was seen to be the link between the sacred and temporal realms. A human sacrifice would be made on special occasions such as the dedication of a new marae or important building. Pacific peoples had no system of writing, but a well-developed oral tradition preserved the history genealogy and stories. Artwork included the carving of bone, wood and stone, as well as body tattooing. Culture heroes, ancestors such as Maui and Tawhaki whose talents and exploits became enshrined in legend are seen as humans possessing extraordinary spiritual power (mana) and therefore superhuman ability. Ancestral spirits were important in everyday life. These, and nature spirits, could be embodied in a variety of objects and great care was taken not to offend them. The spirits of dead persons dwelt in an unstratified underworld, there being no notion of judgment.

The end of faith : religion, terror, and the future of reason, by Sam Harris. (2004)
Harris views religious irrationality and fundamentalism as both the immediate source of terrorism and also the source of much of the evil that has taken place throughout history. He proposes turning away from religion entirely and living on the basis of reason. Drawing on insights from Eastern philosophy and neuroscience, he suggests using meditation to achieve a state of consciousness that is nondualistic. ... It is rare in this postmodern age to read a book by someone so vigorously defending rational thought, especially from a unique neuroscientific perspective. (Library Journal) The case for religion, by Keith Ward. (2004) Ward makes an argument for religion as a necessary and reasonable exercise for humans who are aware of the transcendent. He examines what major figures in other disciplines-anthropology, sociology and psychology-have historically said about why humans practice religion before sketching the world's major religions. "Religion is too persistent, pervasive, positive and profound to be merely foolish." (adapted from Publishers Weekly) Religion : a beginner's guide,
