Some of them can trace their origins to the early Middle Ages when religious institutions were among the first to offer shelter to needy elderly people. Many others were initiated by individuals who left money for the erection of sometimes splendid buildings. Often picturesque, they can be found in towns, villages and remote country areas. Almshouses come in a variety of architectural styles and often have interesting features, including coats of arms, inscriptions, dedications, statues, clock-towers and sundials. Many have chapels and gardens.
Anna Hallett has lectured for a wide range of educational institutions. Her interest in almshouses started in the Netherlands, where she was born, and has continued in Britain where she has enjoyed discovering the many fascinating examples to be found in the most unlikely places..

Precursors and features of Baroque architecture
Michelangelo 's late Roman buildings, particularly St. Peter's Basilica , may be considered precursors of baroque architecture, as the design of the latter achieves a colossal unity that was previously unknown. His pupil Giacomo della Porta continued this work in Rome, particularly in the facade of the Jesuit church Il Gesu , which leads directly to the most important church facade of the early baroque, Santa Susanna by Carlo Maderno . In the 17th century , the baroque style spread through Europe and Latin America, where it was particularly promoted by the Jesuits.

General History For more than a thousand years, until the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, Byzantine art retained a remarkably conservative orientation; the major phases of its development emerge from a background marked by adherence to classical principles. Artistic activity was temporarily disrupted by the Iconoclastic controversy (726–843), which resulted in the wholesale destruction of figurative works of art and the restriction of permissible content to ornamental forms or to symbols like the cross. The pillaging of Constantinople by the Frankish Crusaders in 1204 was perhaps a more serious blow; but it was followed by an impressive late flowering of Byzantine art under the Paleologus dynasty. Byzantine Art Mosaic Byzantine achievements in mosaic decoration brought this art to an unprecedented level of monumentality and expressive power. Mosaics were applied to the domes, half-domes, and other available surfaces of Byzantine churches in an established hierarchical order. The center of the dome was reserved for the representation of the Pantocrator, or Jesus as the ruler of the universe, whereas other sacred personages occupied lower spaces in descending order of importance.

Titled "Built of Living Stones," the document advises parishes, priests, and architects on appropriate church styles, which reflect solid theological foundations.
Correspondent Deryl Davis takes a look at the new guidelines that require prominent placement of the tabernacle (a receptacle for the consecrated elements of the Eucharist) and baptismal font. He also talks to Archbishop Oscar H. Church Acoustical and Church Sound System Tips
by Joseph De Buglio How to Wreck The Sound of Your Church
Last updated - Updated April 2005
Here are the most common mistakes churches make with their sound systems, acoustics, new church buildings and church renovations. This list is not going to tell you how to live with them or how to fix them. For that you should get expert help. If your sound system designer (who should be an "expert") doesn't respond to these problems, then don't be surprised if your new sound system, acoustics or new church doesn't sound good. The author of this article can not be held accountable for mistakes your church made. The author is able to fix all of these problems..
  • Do not design a church that's square. It's the worst shape. Excess sound storage, standing waves, excess noise from early and late reflections are just some of the problems.
  • If you do design a square church, put the platform in the corner. This is better, but there is no acoustical, sound or architectural reason to build such a space in the first place. You can make such a room speech and music friendly, but that's about all you can do with them.

    Revival Afoot: Traditional Sacred Architecture
Modernist's gripe laments growing influence of tradition
(May/June 2000) BY MICHAEL S. ROSE National Catholic Reporter (NCR) the liturgical modernists who have had a death grip on both the liturgy and the design of Catholic churches seem to be distressed at the growing movement of young architects who are embracing the rich history and patrimony of church architecture and building traditions. Porticos, bell towers, colonnades, vaulting, stained glass, baldachinos, prominent tabernacles, wooden pews, kneelers, statues, murals, crucifixes, and devotional shrines are some of the common traditional elements used in the design of their new churches. Writing in the NCR, Michael DeSanctis, associate professor of fine arts at Erie’s Gannon University and traveling LDC, takes Stroik and Smith to task for their desire to rid Catholicism of the barren, uninspiring worship spaces of recent decades. Calling them and their cohort "blatant opportunists," "the stodgiest of antiquarians" "recyclers of architectural fashion," "paranoid and self-righteous Pharisees," DeSanctis condemns the neo-Classicists’ desire to build upon the rock of history and eschew the modernism that has defaced our Catholic architecture for more than three decades.

History Architecture Manuscript Paintings ... Art of Book Armenian Architecture By Dr. Dickran Kouymjian Architecture, First of the arts f all the arts, architecture is supreme. For the general public used to visiting museums filled with paintings of compact size easily hung by the hundreds, the priority given to architecture in the art world may seem strange. But buildings are not susceptible to display in museums, when reduced to photos or models, they seem pale next to the immediate beauty of original art works. Thus, architectural monuments are only accessible to the public by distant travel or through specialized books. Art historians have always put architecture in a different category; they have measured the value of monuments by standards other than those appropriate to smaller decorative creations in whatever medium. So, too, in the realm of Armenian art, architecture takes pride of place. It was the first of the arts of Armenia to be seriously studied, and to this day Armenian architecture receives more scholarly attention than all of the other arts combined. The separateness of architecture from the other arts is not due just to size, though certainly the immense mass of any building compared to other works of art is so disproportionate that no real comparison is possible, nor to the labor, in the case of architecture perforce collective, required for its creation. Because buildings are natural vehicles for decoration, they differ from other art objects by often incorporating in themselves the two most important of the other arts: painting and sculpture.

Sebastian Obermaier has built about 80 churches in the city of El Alto, Bolivia, and they all look like fun. You couldn't do this in America - building code would stop you - but it would be good to try. A visiting friend said "It's like Ave Maria Grotto, only life size!" Architecture
The Church Interpreted : "This is none other but the House of God, and this is the Gate of Heaven. Whosoever thou art that enterest this church, leave it not without a prayer to God for thyself, for those who minister, and for those who worship here." Trinity Lutheran Church of Detroit is designed to express the spirit of that paragraph. A "Church" that is indeed, bringing out in each detail the original meaning of the Greek word Kyriakon: The Lord's House. Here also art finds its noblest use in the worship of Almighty God, for His plan of salvation for all mankind is depicted in materials such as glass, wood, metal, and stone. This beautiful stone structure is the third church edifice in over a century of history as the Mother Lutheran Congregation of Missouri Synod churches in Detroit. The building is constructed of vari-colored granite and Indiana limestone, with slate roof and floor, oak woodwork and stained glass. Its style is 16th Century Pier-and-Clerestory Gothic, with a triforium gallery similar to those seen in Old World cathedrals. Follow the links below to learn more intricate details of the architecture of our cathedral.

    ISBN: 0860787796

Using detailed analyses of individual buildings as a point of departure, Professor Buchwald here examines various approaches to Byzantine architectural forms, and raises questions concerning the use of stylistic and other forms of analysis. One group of articles focuses on stylistic currents in Asia Minor, including that of the 13th-century Lascarid dynasty, previously unknown.
Others explore methods which appear to have been used in the design of Byzantine churches, such as dimensional "rules of thumb", modular and geometric systems of proportion, and the quadratura, hitherto recognized only in Western architecture. The final essays pose further questions: what were the goals and achievements of Byzantine architects, when they transformed older existing buildings? How, and why, did they use stereometric Euclidean geometry? And was there any ultimately Platonic connection?

    Contemporary Church Architecture
Close your eyes for a moment and try to visualise the outside of a church... What do you see? A cross crowning a steeply-pitched roof? A steeple? Stained glass windows, perhaps.
Together these architectural elements form the stereotypical image that we’ve come to associate with the Christian church. But the reality of contemporary church architecture paints a very different picture. Indeed, you can easily walk by a modern church without realising it’s a church at all.
So on this Easter weekend we look at contemporary church architecture and how it reflects the changing nature of Christianity in Australia.
    Transcript
Geraldine Doogue: And seeing we’re supposed to be enjoying breakfast together on this day when we’re supposed to be, allegedly, in a slightly more lofty tone, I’d like you to close your eyes for just a moment, and try to visualise the outside of a church. Now what do you see? A cross, crowning a steeply pitched roof, a steeple? I’m sure you see stained-glass windows. Well together, these architectural elements form the stereotypical image that we’ve come to associate with the Christian church.
But the reality of contemporary church architecture paints a very different picture. In fact you can easily walk by a modern church without realising it’s a church at all. So to discuss today’s church architecture, and how it reflects the changing nature of Christianity in Australia, I’m joined now by two architects who have designed churches in recent years in Australia.
