Scientology faces French ban

The Church claims several million members worldwide
France might consider banning the Church of Scientology, which it regards as a sect rather than a religion. The Justice Minister, Elisabeth Guigou, made it clear that the future of the organisation in France was under close scrutiny. Her remarks came as US officials expressed concern over the growing intolerance shown to minority religious groups in some European countries. John Travolta is one of the group's high-profile followers Scientology, which was founded in 1954 by science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard, teaches that technology can expand the mind and help solve human problems. It is particularly popular among Hollywood stars - followers include John Travolta, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. But it is treated with suspicion in Europe. Seven Scientologists are due to go on trial in southern France later this month after an investigation into alleged fraud, illegal practice of medicine and premeditated violence. There have been several other cases in France's contentious relationship with the organisation.

What is Scientology? What is Dianetics? L. Ron Hubbard ... Scientology: A New Slant On Life
Welcome to the Founding Church of Scientology Washington, D.C.
The Fraser Mansion was fully renovated and restored, bringing new life to this historical D.C. landmark, as seen here in the reception area. The solid white oak floors and woodwork in this building, handcarved in 1890, were fully brought back to their original beauty. Nearly 50 years ago, the Founding Church of Scientology was established in Washington, D.C.. Today, we can look back proudly at the past five decades. From this beginning, Scientology now encompasses more than 3,200 churches, missions and groups in 154 countries, helping millions around the world. Mr. Hubbard would continually return throughout the most important formative years of Dianetics and Scientology from the late 1940s to the early 1950s.
The stained glass windows in the chapel feature the Scientology cross and Dianetics and Scientology symbols on either side. The flanking white oak paneling was handcarved in 1890. The chapel is the setting for Sunday Services, weddings and other Scientology ceremonies.

The Secrets of Scientology
The Church of Scientology is a rich and vengeful religious cult, or as one critic puts it, "a cross between the Moonies and the Mafia." But it would be a mistake to dismiss its underlying technology as harmless or ineffective. Scientologists know a great deal about thought control, social control, rhetorical judo (defeat by misdirection, deft use of logical fallacies) and high pressure sales, though as victims of their own technology, they wouldn't characterize it that way. Despite its extensive advertising campaign, including half-hour TV infomercials for Dianetics, the Church has been careful to maintain a veil of mystery about its teachings, in part by outlawing any meaningful discussion or analysis of them. (See the policy bulletin prohibiting verbal tech .) To learn the inner secrets of the cult requires years of strict obedience and large monetary donations. In return, Scientology promises its adherents "total freedom". The Internet, through sites like this one, is going to make good on that promise. This web site is dedicated to exposing the various technical tricks behind Scientology, until all its secrets have been laid before the public at no charge.

Ron Hubbard, stated: Do you ever get fed up with the scandal, death and destruction that dominates the news? Do you wish you could DO something about it? Something that would really HELP? When Scientologist Lorraine Baritz of Boston was called to the hospital by friends whose 13-year-old son was in a coma and on life-support four days after a severe motorcycle accident, she knew exactly what she had to do to help. News of the recovery traveled through the hospital, reaching others standing vigil by their own children. A couple with an infant son in a coma asked for help. Again Lorraine answered the call. The outcome was reported in the local Boston newspaper: Stories like these are commonplace, anything but common in a world where people are searching for answers on how to provide real and lasting help to others.

I have another page that organizes all the documents I have by subject and still another that contains several links to other Scientology related sources (both pro and con) . I think people who are new to this subject would probably find this narrative page more informative, while those who are looking for data on something particular would do better on the organized page. Police work for Scientology
Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Thomas Penick, who has the unenviable task of refereeing sidewalk skirmishes between the Church of Scientology and anti-Scientology protesters in Clearwater, recently pointed to an arrangement that allows off-duty Clearwater cops to work for Scientology and noted, "They are coming very dangerously close to becoming a private security force for the Church of Scientology." Penick was right to call attention to the uncomfortably cozy relationship developing between city police and the church, which has its spiritual headquarters in downtown Clearwater. Under the arrangement, sanctioned by Clearwater Police Chief Sid Klein, the church pays $25 an hour for two uniformed police officers to work 8 half-hour shifts 365 days a year. Officers sign up for the extra work if they want it and are assigned on a rotating basis. As reported Sunday by staff writer Deborah O'Neil, the Church of Scientology has paid nearly $150,000 to 110 officers since January 2000. The Police Department gets $2.50 an hour from the church to cover fees and workers' compensation.

G.C. Oosthuizen, Th.D. Religious Philosophy, G.C. OOSTHUIZEN, TH.D. professor (retired), dept. of science of religion university of durban-westville natal, south africa As a student of the Science of Religion, I have worked for a number of years in the field of comparative religion. I am an adherent of a Calvinistic Church, but as an academician who has to give an objective analysis, irrespective of my own religious persuasions, I am called upon through my own conscience to be objective. Thus, all subjectivity has to be checked by the broader context in which one has to act. It would be misleading if one came forward merely with his own norms, and in any state where religious freedom is allowed this approach could be most dangerous. Any discussion which centers around the various immanental and transcendental emphases of Scientology is difficult to understand if a knowledge of Eastern religions, especially Buddhism, which functions as a religion in South Africa, is defective. There are other aspects to be considered, such as the concern with physical and spiritual survival and the 'Life Force,' or 'Supreme Being' and the importance of that 'force' which is not part of the physical universe; and the importance of communication in human relationships and man as a spiritual being. There is no contradiction whatsoever when it is stated that Scientology is "an applied religious philosophy of life and a body of knowledge concerning Man and his relationship to the Universe, to his fellow beings. It holds that man is inherently a spiritual and immortal being." The study of religion could be done from various angles such as the psychology of religion, sociology of religion, geography of religion, including ecology and religion, ethics of religion, etc.

Scientology told to release notes on late member
A judge gives the church a delay so it can fight for the privacy of a practice it compares to confession.
By THOMAS C. TOBIN TAMPA Two boxes of notes jotted in a unique shorthand sit in the office of a Tampa judge while the Church of Scientology fights another legal battle for what it says are its religious rights. The notes were written by Scientology "auditors" who "counseled" Scientologist Lisa McPherson in 1995, the year she died after a 17-day stay at a church retreat in Clearwater. On Monday, Hillsborough Circuit Judge James S. Moody Jr. rejected for a third time Scientology's attempts to keep those records private. But the church, fielding a battery of seven lawyers, said it would immediately appeal. It contends the records of McPherson, like those kept on all Scientologists, are as private as disclosures in a Catholic confessional. Scientology indicated it would appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. Releasing the records, the church's lawyers said, would undermine the ironclad promise of privacy in an auditing session, the core practice of Scientology in which parishioners are said to purge psychological and physical problems.

THE ECCLESIASTICAL HIERARCHY OF THE SCIENTOLOGY RELIGION
The Church of Scientology is formed into an ecclesiastical structure which unifies and aligns a multitude of diverse religious activities including not only Scientology and Dianetics auditing and training, but proselytization, ecclesiastical management, relay of communication, production of dissemination materials and many other functions. Thus the Scientology religious community is united both by common beliefs and practices and an organizational form uniquely suited to its religious mission. Scientologists come together in a worldwide hierarchical religious community. The structure of this community is an important, functional part of the Scientology religion. Because Scientology Scripture requires that its religious practices be ministered in an orthodox manner, the hierarchical structure helps ensure that individual churches receive the support and guidance needed to do this. All Scientologists are thus assured of an orthodox religious observance in every church around the world. Site Map Religious Resources Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard Resources:

State takes middle road against Scientology
Colleagues of State Attorney Bernie McCabe say charging the church, not the members, and deciding against a manslaughter charge walks the line between acting too harshly and too weakly.
By THOMAS C. TOBIN LEARWATER Bob Heyman remembers the mood in early 1997 at the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's office when prosecutors were hearing about a young, mentally distraught woman who had died in the Church of Scientology's care. "I think there was a sense that this was a senseless death," said Heyman, whose boss, State Attorney Bernie McCabe, was only beginning to examine the case of Lisa McPherson. Heyman, now in private practice, was preparing to end a 15-year career as a prosecutor. "This was just terrible," he said. "This woman never should have died." Almost a year would pass before Clearwater police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement would complete their investigation and give McCabe their opinion that a crime had been committed. It would take McCabe another 11 months to decide whether charges were warranted and, if so, which charges. Among McCabe's options: Be aggressive and level a serious charge such as manslaughter, but risk a bruising legal battle with the Church of Scientology, which had taken on much bigger fish than McCabe.

    SCIENTOLOGY: IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS
Creating a happy and stable marriage and family life can, for many, prove daunting. When so many marriages end in divorce, leaving behind broken homes and divided families, one can begin to wonder if there is any way to have a lasting relationship. The root cause of problems in any relationship, as L. Ron Hubbard discovered, is transgression against a previously agreed upon moral code. A marriage, a family, or any relationship between people is built upon a foundation of agreements, and when those agreements are broken, communication is inhibited or even cut. Scientology can heal such a breach and bring about a resurgence of affinity often greater than before. Scientology technology provides a way to make marriage and family life both satisfying and rewarding. Using Scientology principles, husbands, wives, sons and daughters alike have successfully salvaged failing relationships and created stronger and happier families, significantly bettering communication with those they care for.

attempted abortion. A=A=A=A: aberration: a departure from rational thought or behavior. From the Latin, aberrare, to wander from; Latin, ab, away, errare, to wander. It means basically to err, to make mistakes, or more specifically to have fixed ideas which are not true. The word is also used in its scientific sense. It means departure from a straight line. If a line should go from A to B, then if it is aberrated it would go from A to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, and finally arrive at B. Taken in its scientific sense, it would also mean the lack of straightness or to see crookedly as, in example, a man sees a horse but thinks he sees an elephant. Aberrated conduct would be wrong conduct, or conduct not supported by reason. Aberration is opposed to sanity, which would be its opposite. acceptance level: acknowledgment: action phrase: a word or phrase in an engram or lock which causes the individual to perform involuntary actions on the time track.
