Ron Hubbard, stated: Do you ever get fed up with the scandal, death and destruction that dominates the news? Do you wish you could DO something about it? Something that would really HELP? When Scientologist Lorraine Baritz of Boston was called to the hospital by friends whose 13-year-old son was in a coma and on life-support four days after a severe motorcycle accident, she knew exactly what she had to do to help. News of the recovery traveled through the hospital, reaching others standing vigil by their own children. A couple with an infant son in a coma asked for help. Again Lorraine answered the call. The outcome was reported in the local Boston newspaper: Stories like these are commonplace, anything but common in a world where people are searching for answers on how to provide real and lasting help to others.

From the review by Derek H. Davis in "Journal of Church and State" (Vol. 42 n. 4, Autumn 2000): "Gordon Melton needs no introduction. (...) Few scholars understand Scientology better than Melton, and his expertise is evident in this crisp, cogent study of one of the world's fastest growing religions. (...) Scientology emerged in the early 1950s as a movement that found its inspiration in the voluminous writings of L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). (...) As Melton describes it, "Scientology has overcome one controversy after another, each of which inhibited growth in one country or the other for a brief period, [but] the overall trend has been one of continuous expansion." (...) Few books pack as much information into so little space. Anyone seeking a brief, insightful, objective, and scholarly summary of Scientology will find this book a valuable resource."

Most members of the public today have heard of Scientology, but few are aware of the Sea Organisation (SO), and the Church itself does not publicise the "Sea Org", as it is called, except to its own members. As a consequence, such accounts as exist have appeared mostly in the media and rely for much of their content on statements by former members of the Church Indeed, few such reports have dealt with the Sea Organisation as a whole, and some have focused on one its sub-groups, the Rehabilitation Project Force, referred to within the Sea Organisation by its initials RPF. The Church describes the RPF as a programme of redemption for members of the SO who have committed severe violations of its codes. The RPF performs a specialised function within the SO, one that, according to the Church, is consistent with that employed by other religious communities to assist erring members of their core religious group to make amends for wrongdoing and return to the good graces of the religious order from whose tenets they had strayed.

For over 40 years, the Churches of Scientology and their members have involved themselves in actively solving the problems of society...
Opening its doors on 18 February, 1954, the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles began as a thinly-staffed group who, nevertheless, wanted to deliver L. Ron Hubbard's life-changing technology to others and help him achieve the goal of a new civilization. As word about the miracle results of Hubbard's technology spread, and as his organizational policy was issued and implemented, the Los Angeles church grew. It moved to larger and larger facilities to accommodate its growing congregation.
The LA Church moved to larger quarters in December, 1962,
at 2005 West 9th Street, where it was located until 1978.
In 1965, the Los Angeles church expanded into two organizations: the "Los Angeles Day Organization," and the "Los Angeles Foundation." Los Angeles Day Organization was also charged with the responsibility of being the senior Scientology organization serving Scientologists throughout the western United States. The Foundation organization was given its own role of servicing the workaday world of local LA.

As many here recall, there was a time not long ago when the commercial and cultural lifeblood of the Clearwater community flowed outward from downtown. That was where we went to do business, where we saw our insurance man, got an ice cream cone, shopped the department stores, bought our kids’ school clothes as fall drew near. Within easy reach were the movie theatre and the hospital, the churches and the banks. Read the latest Freedom On-line

And yes, I know this isn't how you spell Sweeny... When I first joined an online club, I forget which one, they would only allow 10 character names, and this was the best I could do, as they wouldn't let in SweeneyTodd.
Direct all complaints about this web page to SweenyTod . If you're looking for information about the musical Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim, you can try looking here . There seems to be a fair amount of interest in this character, which is interesting. I first came across the name while watching The Muppet Show, of all things (an odd place to learn about a cannibalistic serial killer). The name stuck, and when I first ventured onto IRC way back in about 1995 or 1996, I tried using it. The nick was too long so I shortened it to SweenyTod, and I've been using that nick ever since. If you're interested in the gruesome details about Sweeney Todd and the history behind the character, there is a write up at the Crime Library.

Yesterday, I posted this story about how xenu.net no longer shows up in results returned from Google . Now, more information has turned up. The Church of Scientology is wielding the DMCA Update [2002-3-21 23:18:44 by rusty]: Google relists xenu.net Slashdot has some more info, much of which came from the threads below in the first place. Hurray for Google! And hurray for all of you for making a fuss about it. Update [2002-3-22 11:33:38 by rusty]: Celebrating too early? Erik Moeller points out that it appears Google has only relisted the index page of xenu.net. Yesterday, I speculated about googlebombing being the reason for xenu.net no longer being returned from Google. Things have changed a bit, and more information is available now. First of all, Google now returns a lot of pages from xenu.net, just not the ones mentioned in the link above. In addition, ranking of various xenu.net pages is now totally skewed compared with how many links to the site. claim that they do not remove pages. To quote Google:

As Scientologists launch unprecedented expansion, downtown Clearwater's identity is at stake. A two-part special report
By ROBERT FARLEY, Times Staff Writer Published July 18, 2004 [Times photos: Scott Keeler] Click for interactive map of dowtown Clearwater properties Click for photo gallery ABOUT L. RON HUBBARD The founder of Scientology was born in Tilden, Neb., on March 13, 1911, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. According to church biographies, Hubbard traveled extensively through Asia as a teenager and studied Eastern religions and philosophies. He later served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II and went on to become a prolific and popular science fiction writer. However, he is best known for his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health, which was published in May 1950 and became a nationwide bestseller. His writings on Dianetics and Scientology inspired Scientologists to form the first Church of Scientology in Los Angeles in 1954. He also wrote on the subjects of education, business management, drug rehabilitation, morals and art. Hubbard died of a stroke on Jan. 24, 1986, at a central California ranch where he had been living in seclusion for several years.

The Church of Scientology is a religious cult which has unwisely decided to declare war against the Usenet and Internet communities. Since December of 1994, this Church and its followers have committed numerous acts that are hostile to the spirit of free speech on the Net. This web page is intended to document these activities.
NOTICE TO READERS
My apologies for the length of time this page has been unavailable to the Net , and even more apologies for the fact that I've not substantially updated it since October 15, 1996. I'm no longer able to keep up with events on a day-to-day basis, so this site is probably going to have to remain a "historical" document rather than a source of up-to-date news. For a more conscientiously updated site, I recommend Andreas Heldal-Lund's Operation Clambake page, which contains both later news and pointers to many of Scientology's Secret Scriptures. Many of you may be wondering why I'm no longer at Cybercom.net. The reason is that on May 15, 1997, Cybercom deleted my account, all my web pages, and all of my private files, without any notice whatsoever. I had to file a lawsuit to get my files back and my mail and web pages forwarded. For more information, visit this page:

Clergy Corner: Scientology
Scientology Gives Believers a Map on the Road to Self-fulfillment
by Cathy Norman L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology, once wrote: "When a culture has fallen totally away from spiritual pursuits into materialism, one must begin by demonstrating they are each a soul, not a material animal. From this realization of their own religious nature, individuals can again come to an awareness of God and become more themselves." In Scientology, we have no dogma about God. Nor do we ask you to take our teachings on faith. Instead, we start by showing you things about your spiritual nature, yourself, others and the world around you. From there you begin your road to truth and relationship with the Ultimate. At an early age, Hubbard began to search for a means by which man could discover his true nature and realize his potential. For more than 30 years, he consulted the great religious works of the East and Greece and Rome, the philosophical works of Hegel and Kant, the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud, and the physical sciences. He also examined the beliefs and rites of primitive cultures, primarily firsthand. In May 1950, Hubbard published his initial findings in
