    (part 1)
While Scientologists respect the religious beliefs of others, the Scientology religion includes the core belief and practice that the spiritual destiny indeed, the very salvation of every man, woman, and child in the universe depends upon the precise application of Scientology religious technology exactly as set forth in Scientology scripture by L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the religion. The advanced scriptures of the Church have been confidential scriptures from the moment the information they contain was discovered and recorded in writing by Mr. Hubbard (see "Why does the Church keep certain of its scriptures confidential?"). Mr. Hubbard created these works for religious use by a few advanced Scientology churches and their parishioners, only when those parishioners had attained a specific level of spiritual progress. It is also far from unprecedented for religious organizations to go to court to defend the purity of their message and materials. Among religions which have done so are the Methodist Church, the Church of Christ, Scientist and the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Welcome to the Church of Scientology Los Angeles
For nearly 50 years, churches of Scientology and their members have involved themselves in actively solving the problems of society. Today, we can look back proudly at the past five decades. The Scientology religion now encompasses more than 3,200 churches, missions and groups in 154 countries, helping millions around the world. When it opened its doors on February 18, 1954, the Church of Scientology in Los Angeles began as a thinly-staffed group who, nevertheless, wanted to deliver life-changing technology to others and help him achieve the goal of a new civilization. As word about the miracle results of technology spread, and as his organizational policy was issued and implemented, the Los Angeles church grew. It moved to larger and larger facilities to accommodate its growing congregation.

    Scientology critic won't face retrial
Prosecutors decide to drop a marijuana charge after jurors, concerned about church influence, deadlock.
By DEBORAH O'NEIL CLEARWATER When the two-day misdemeanor trial of Scientology critic Jesse Prince ended Thursday, jurors had little doubt he had possessed marijuana as the state charged. What bothered some of them, according to two jurors, was the possibility that Prince had been set up by the Church of Scientology. They heard testimony about how Prince, once a high-ranking church member, was watched, videotaped and trailed for months by private investigators hired by Scientology lawyers. Private investigator Barry Gaston said he was hired because he is black, like Prince, and befriended Prince using a false name. Gaston said he was paid $14,000 for his work.

The site has been completely removed from the search engine and from the Google Directory, which uses data from the Open Directory Project, DMOZ A spokesman for Google was unable to tell Daily Rotten why or how the site had been removed, explaining that many staffers were away at an offsite meeting. The spokesman did not return our phone calls today. Controversy first arose in February when a widely linked article reported on the Church of Scientology's supremacy over the search term Scientology . The author documents the manipulation of pro-Scientology website placement in Google. He suggests that using a network of cross-linked Scientology related websites with listings in the DMOZ directory, their collective Google "PageRank" was artificially inflated. Thus any websites critical of Scientology did not appear on the first page of search results for the term "Scientology". It was also suspected that a volunteer DMOZ editor and Scientologist, charged with maintaining the Scientology category may have been responsible for adding a great number of the shill sites, in an apparent violation of DMOZ policy.

Church of Scientology: A Religious Mafia?
By Craig Branch Controversy continues to rage around Scientology , due mostly to the totalitarian and abusive nature of its practices. The evolution and history of Scientology raises serious and fundamental questions about freedoms and protections of religion and even what or who defines a religion. Scientology is an anomaly on even a diverse religious landscape. It does, in fact, involve religious belief (in what most outsiders would regard as science fiction). But that belief appears to have been built chiefly as a cover for exploitive commercial operations. Scientology's history of terror and abuse appears to be the result of its founder's delusion and paranoia. Evidence of L. Ron Hubbard's delusional character was well documented in court where the trial judge concluded, "The organization [Scientology] clearly is schizophrenic and paranoid, and this bizarre combination seems to be a reflection of its founder, LRH [L. Ron Hubbard]. The evidence portrays a man who has been virtually a pathological liar when it comes to his history, background and achievements." (Church of Scientology v. Armstrong, No. C420153, California Supreme Court, 1984)
