The Scandal of Scientology
(1971) balanced by glowing testimonials written by and for Scientologists. Impartial treatments by outsiders have been rare, making this slim but informative volume all the more welcome. Melton (director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Santa Barbara, Calif., and author of the Encyclopedia of American Religions ), begins his study with a history of Lafayette Ron Hubbard, a successful Hollywood screenwriter in the 1930s who also churned out voluminous pulp fiction under various pen names. In 1950 Hubbard published his seminal work Dianetics
Journal of Church and State
, Derek H. Davis
This short book is the first in a series of general introductions to new religions offered by the Center for Studies on New Religions. Future titles will examine Baha'i, Sokka Gakkai, Unificationism, the Family, and other religions new on the landscape.
Gordon Melton needs no introduction. He is among the foremost experts on new and nonconventional religions. Few scholars understand Scientology better than Melton, and his expertise is evident in this crisp, cogent study of one of the world's fastest growing religions.

Church of Scientology charged in member's death
In this story:
November 13, 1998
Web posted at: 11:14 p.m. EST (0414 GMT) CLEARWATER, Florida (CNN) The Church of Scientology was charged by Florida prosecutors Friday in the death of a member. The State Attorney's office in Pinellas County filed the felony charges after a lengthy investigation into the 1995 death of Lisa McPherson. McPherson had been a member of the church for 18 years and, according to relatives, had been talking about leaving the church. McPherson, 36, died December 5, 1995, after being confined for 18 days to a Scientology property called the Fort Harrison Hotel, investigators said. Prosecutor Bernie McCabe charged the church with abuse or neglect of a disabled adult and unauthorized practice of medicine, both felonies.

Much of Scientology applies common sense solutions to life's perplexities. If a church should be judged according to its good works, then Scientology receives high marks for its addiction treatment, literacy, and civil rights programs. But there is more, including mysticism, mythology, some secrecy, and a healthy dose of what might be termed eccentricity. Some observers wonder how a church that promotes mental and emotional well being, which it does, can itself at times appear to be paranoid or dysfunctional? Dr. Melton explores these questions and the major aspects of the church's hierarchical structure and theology, showing, among other things, that the study of religion is seldom dull. J. Gordon Melton (Ph.D., history and literature of religion, Northwestern University) is managing director in Santa Barbara, California, of the Institute for the Study of American Religion. He is the author of the influential Encyclopedia of American Religions and some twenty other workds, co-author of the award-winning

Welcome to the Church of Scientology of Pretoria Scientology Founder, L. Ron Hubbard, stated: Do you ever get fed up with the scandal, death and destruction that dominates the news? Do you wish you could DO something about it? Something that would really HELP? When Scientologist Lorraine Baritz of Boston was called to the hospital by friends whose 13-year-old son was in a coma and on life-support four days after a severe motorcycle accident, she knew exactly what she had to do to help. News of the recovery traveled through the hospital, reaching others standing vigil by their own children. A couple with an infant son in a coma asked for help. Again Lorraine answered the call. The outcome was reported in the local Boston newspaper: Stories like these are commonplace, anything but common in a world where people are searching for answers on how to provide real and lasting help to others. Individual Scientology Volunteer Ministers come from all walks of life, and work to help family, friends and strangers in many situations and circumstances: relationship problems or questions, anxiety, tutoring a child in learning skills, teen stress, self-esteem, helping a family member overcome alcohol or drug dependency, guiding a criminally inclined adolescent back onto the road to self-respect and honesty, resolving a dispute at work or at home, helping an associate to better organize his life or handle symptoms of stress.

Washington DC, April 17-19, 1998 I refer to Freedom for Religions in Germany as FRG. You may notice the pun as the former acronym of the Federal Republic of Germany. FRG was formed to address the serious religious freedom abuses being suffered by minority religions at the hands of German officials. It was originally conceived by the Human Rights Department of the Church of Scientology International and has been joined by members of over 10 religious faiths, including Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, Unificationist, Protestant, and Buddhist. The purpose of FRG is to bring the attention of world institutions to the abuses of religious freedom in modern-day Germany; to give small minority religions a voice, initiate fact-finding missions, expose abuses, issue reports, seek dialogue and resolution of these abuses, and encourage various government bodies to assist in bringing resolution to these problems. One of the largest obstacles that religious freedom faces in Germany is the German government’s denial that there is any religious discrimination. This statement is from the vice-chancellor in the Foreign Ministry, Klaus Kinkle: “If the German government continues to deny this, it makes it patently impossible to handle the situation and more lives become ruined while the German government debates its own integrity. That integrity is in serious doubt to the rest of the international community. Germany is a signatory to a number of international treaties and accords, which guarantee religious freedom of belief and association to the citizens of Germany. Among these are the

Tom Cruise has been working overtime on behalf of the Church of Scientology. On Wednesday, it made headlines overseas that the "Vanilla Sky" actor, a devout Scientologist, had met with Dan Coats, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, to lobby the case for the rights of the church in Germany. A top church official, however, tells The Scoop that Cruise has been privately meeting with top politicians on behalf of the church for the last few years. Kurt Weiland, a director of the church, says that among the U.S. officials who have met with Cruise to discuss the Church of Scientology's plight are Attorney General John Ashcroft and Sen. Jesse Helms, the Republican from North Carolina who is also senior member of Foreign Relations Committee. Weiland says that there were "private meetings and correspondence" between Cruise and both Helms and Ashcroft "a few years ago." When asked if those meetings and letters resulted in anything, Weiland said, "Yes. Efforts were made by them to let the German government know that . . . . they were missing the mark." The issue has been a cause celebre in the church for years. John Travolta, also a Scientologist, reportedly discussed the plight of the church in Germany with Bill Clinton when he was playing the then-president in the movie "Primary Colors." And in 1996, a group of Hollywood heavyweights wrote a letter to then-German Chancellor Helmut Kohl about the country's treatment of Scientology.

"Religious Freedom in Latin America and the New Millennium"
October 10-12, 1998, Sheraton Mofarrej Hotel, Sao Paolo, Brazil I have to tell you just a little bit about the discrimination against our church over the years. The religion of Scientology was founded by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard in the early 1950s. We now have about eight million members around the world and churches and missions in about 100 countries. As a new religion, we have experienced a lot of abuse and discrimination over the years from those who are anti-religious and those that have originated and passed false information in an effort to suppress our religion. The discrimination has come in various forms. In the United States it has come from the government agencies that have conducted raids upon our church and spread false information. As a result, our members from foreign countries were not allowed to enter the United States during the 1970s. This was greatly relieved in 1993 when the Internal Revenue Service formally recognized our church as a religion and we became tax exempt. In England in the 1960s, all foreign Scientologists attempting to enter that country were banned. Fortunately the ban was lifted several years later. In Australia, Scientology was banned from one of the states. In 1983, the Supreme Court of Australia recognized not only the Church of Scientology , but also 500 other religions in that country.

Official Scientology Cross Symbol The Church of Scientology is a new religious movement that was founded by science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard as an organization dedicated to the practice of Scientology , an "applied religious philosophy" formulated by Hubbard. "A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights, are the aims of Scientology," according to Hubbard. From its earliest days, the Church has become a focus of controversy wherever it appeared, with critics charging that the actual methods and goals of the Church sharply contradict Hubbard's stated aims. The nature and legal status of the Church of Scientology continues to arouse controversy around the world. The Church of Scientology has, since 1993, been recognized by the US Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit charitible organization, affording it the same legal protections and favorable tax treatment that the US government extends to long-established religious groups. By contrast, many other governments have been reluctant to accept the Church: the governments of Germany and Belgium officially regard the Church of Scientology as a totalitarian cult ; in France , a parliamentary report classified Scientology as a dangerous cult ; in the United Kingdom and Canada the Church of Scientology is not regarded as meeting the legal standards for being considered a

SCIENTOLOGY
(THE CHURCH OF SCIENTOLOGY)
Scientology, one of the genuinely new religions to originate in the United States in the twentieth century, was founded by L. Ron Hubbard (1911-1986). The Church of Scientology believes "that Man is basically good, that he is seeking to survive, [and] that his survival depends on himself and upon his fellows and his attainment of brotherhood with the universe" (from Church of Scientology's statement of beliefs). Hubbard's extensive writings and taped lectures constitute the beliefs and the basis for the religion's practices. The aims of Scientology are "A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where man is free to rise to greater heights." L. Ron Hubbard grew up mostly in Montana, but also lived in Nebraska; Seattle, Washington; and Washington, DC . As a child he read extensively, and by the age of twelve was studying the theories of Freud. As a teenager Hubbard traveled throughout Asia and the East, continuing his studies of philosophy, religion, and human nature. In 1929 he returned to the United States and in 1930 enrolled in George Washington University, studying mathematics, engineering, and nuclear physics. Hubbard wanted to answer the basic questions relating to the human being's nature, and decided to do further research on his own. To finance this, he began a literary career in the early 1930s, publishing numerous stories and screen plays in various genres, including adventure, mystery, and science fiction. Hubbard continued his travels and then served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was injured during the war, and used some of his own theories concerning the human mind to assist in his healing.
