Obesity - There IS a Diet That Works!
Overweight seems to be a national plague. Diets, books on dieting, dieting organizations, and exhortations from doctors and health professional do not seem to be enough. Millions of people have turned to dangerous prescription drugs or fad diets to stave off their hunger. What is really going on here? The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America's weight problem than anything else. Each day we are barraged with powerful TV and radio ads promoting the idea that it's perfectly OK to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers and french fries for lunch, and fried chicken and french fries for supper. A high-fat diet such as this causes subtle changes in metabolism. The body's ability to burn fat is compromised. Levels of insulin, which "demobilizes" fat metabolism, increase, while insulin "receptors" in our cells become less effective or shut down entirely. In a downward spiral, the body collects more fat, and the fat-burning mechanism is further compromised. Combined with a profound deficiency in vitamin C (most Americans get about 1% of the vitamin C they need for proper metabolism), heart disease and diabetes are next in line.

10 Natural Remedies That Can Save Your Life

by James F. Balch (Doubleday, April 1999) GARLIC : No one is neutral about garlic, just as no one is neutral about skunks. Some people love the look of a skunk's soft, furry body, its quizzical face, its seemingly gentle demeanor. Others bluntly say that a skunk stinks, and they want nothing to do with it.
And then there's garlic. Some cuisines seem to start with garlic, the other ingredients, like tomatoes, herbs, and shellfish, serving as mere afterthoughts. There are gourmets, bon vivants, and, if truth be told, gluttons who all speak of garlic the way wine connoisseurs speak of their favorite vintage and cheese lovers talk of the subtle distinctions in flavor of one variety over another.
The garlic haters, on the other hand, say it smells terrible. They can't stand the way it comes out on the breath, the way the odor seems to ooze through the pores of the eater. They even joke that garlic is an excellent method of birth control; if one lover eats garlic, the other will maintain a distance of at least ten feet. For some people, garlic is even mildly toxic, upsetting their stomachs.
Garlic and alcohol are substances that are not metabolized. They are absorbed through the stomach lining, which is why they leave the telltale odor. And it's why some people are sick to the stomach after ingesting them.

Parents Medical Problems
Once your child has been diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease , it may help to know what could happen next - how your child might feel and what treatments might be involved. Four major areas of concern for parents of kids with kidney diseases are the child's blood pressure, diet anemia (low blood count), and growth . Your child may frequently feel sick and may need to take medicines and be careful about what he or she eats and drinks. For you, that can mean a greater need for involvement in your child's life. Keep reading to learn about treatment for your child's kidney disease and what you can do to help. Treating Kidney Diseases
Treatment begins with diet modification and medicines. Your child may need to take several medicines, including vitamins, calcium, bicarbonate, and blood pressure pills. As a result, medication management may be a major challenge. If your child has difficulty remembering to take his or her medicine, you might want to get a medicine clock, which is made up of two cardboard clocks - one for each 12-hour period - with a picture of the medicines on the faces of the clocks at the times the medications need to be taken. These clocks can provide a valuable cue for a child who needs to take several doses of different medicines throughout the day and evening. Also, alarm watches can be set to remind your child to take his or her medicine. If your child needs to take so much medicine that he or she feels full and doesn't want to eat as much, ask your child's doctor for suggestions. Try to find the most acceptable forms of medicine (smaller pills, capsules, or more concentrated liquids, for example) and simplify your child's medication schedule under the doctor's guidance as much as possible.

The new language of medicine: Part II
August 11, 1999 Web posted at: 10:12 AM EDT (1412 GMT) In this story: Prime examples One haystack, many needles A foggy brain, a book in the refrigerator The promise of integrative medicine ... RELATEDS By William Collinge, M.P.H., Ph.D. (WebMD) This is the second in a two-part series on integrative medicine, the combination of conventional and alternative therapies. Mysterious diseases that neither seem to have a single cause nor a single cure are the most compelling forces behind the rise of integrative medicine. The diseases, called "complex chronic illnesses," have confounded doctors, who attempt to treat patients suffering from the conditions for which one form of medicine doesn't seem to be enough. Complex chronic illnesses affect more than one system in the body. Because of this, patients recover most successfully with the use of an amalgam of therapies that involve both conventional and alternative approaches.

Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction "Mindfulness meditation helps in facing all aspects of life, however painful, with increasing degrees of equanimity, wisdom and compassion," says Reibel. Meditation training helps patients with chronic illnesses ranging from AIDS to sleeping disorders reduce their symptoms and improve their quality of life, according to a new study. Daily functioning as well as both psychological and physical symptoms improved in patients participating in a meditation training program. Patients also reported dramatically improved ability to cope with stress, improved sense of well being, reduced body tension and increased mental clarity, says lead author Diane K. Reibel, Ph.D., of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia The meditation program is known as mindfulness-based stress reduction or MBSR, an intervention designed for patients with chronic illness. The program consisted of eight weekly group sessions plus a full-day intensive meditation retreat in the sixth week of the program.
