Becky Shively
Niagara Falls, NY

I am a Mom of a PKU (phenylketonuria) child. He was born looking perfectly normal on the outside. I received a call when he was 10 days old that there was a problem and I knew he had PKU. He has a half-sibling from his father's previous marriage with the disorder. The hospital was amazed. They had never heard before of half-siblings having PKU, since both parents have to be carries. What was even more amazing was that my friend of 20 years had a girl four years earlier with severe PKU. I used to say for an extremly rare disease I sure had enough kids with it running around my house. The blood tests that need to be done are the easy part. The kids get used to it and don't usually put up much of a fight.
The everyday heartache comes when feeding your child could damage them mentally. With PKU a certain enzyme that digests a specfic part of protein is missing causing it to toxify the brain. Researchers are unsure how a liver defect can cause brain damage, but with PKU it does. The diet is made mostly of fruits and vegetables. Specially made pasta, breads and now cheeses! There is a special formula they need to consume everyday. It is a very time consuming endever. I am constantly boiling pasta or mixing up baked goods. The foods are terribly expensive and hard to get. Insurance pays for my son's diet, but others are not so lucky. Parents know without this food the diet is impossible to maintain a good blood level. It is for those other parents, my girlfriend included, that I started a support group. To find other parents and to unite to help our children "get the basics" namely food.

The Alan Guttmacher Institute CONGRESS BRIEFED ON SELF MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC ILLNESS RESEARCH More than 45 percent of adults struggle with a chronic health condition that affects their daily activities. From diabetes to asthma, heart disease, depression, obesity, and AIDS, more and more Americans are living with chronic illnesses. More than 90 million Americans live with one or more chronic illness; at least 22 million live with three chronic illnesses. Coping with a complex chronic illness such as diabetes affects the individual as well as family members throughout the entire lifespan. On March 12th, the Coalition for the Advancement of Health Through Behavioral and Social Science Research (CAHT-BSSR), along with the Decade of Behavior, the American Psychological Association, COSSA, the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences, and the Society for Research in Child Development, sponsored a congressional briefing to bring the need for additional research to help Americans effectively manage their chronic conditions to the attention of policymakers. Three distinguished social and behavioral scientists, Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob, James Hill, and Dana Goldman, discussed the current scientific knowledge about self-management and directions for research that have the potential to improve the ability of people to manage and enhance their health.

The Honorable Ralph Regula, Chair
April 30, 2004
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Subcommittee, the Coalition for the Advancement of Health Through Behavioral and Social Science Research (CAHT-BSSR) appreciates and welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2005 appropriations for the National Institutes of Health. CAHT-BSSR includes 17 professional organizations, scientific societies, coalitions, and research institutions concerned with the promotion of and funding for research in the social and behavioral sciences. Collectively, we represent more than 120 professional associations, scientific societies, universities, and research institutions. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ( CMS) recently reported that health care spending in the United States rose to $1.6 trillion in 2002, up from $1.4 trillion in 2001 and $1.3 trillion in 2000. Health expenditures per person averaged $5,440 in 2002, up from $5,021 in 2001 and $4,670 in 2000. Significant factors driving this increase are the aging of the U.S. population, and the rapid rise in chronic diseases, many caused or exacerbated by behavioral factors: for example, obesity, caused by sedentary behavior and poor diet; addictions and resulting health problems caused by tobacco and other drug use. Nearly 125 million Americans are living with one or more chronic conditions, like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, arthritis, asthma, mental illness and Alzheimer’s disease.

Transcending Chronic Illness

consciously pacing your days
learning to slow down and live fully within your limitations
We live in a stressful high speed culture. Employers expect top intensity of production out of their workers. Employees put up with this pressure because they want the money they are earning to buy those things they feel they've got to own. Even our children tend to be involved in too many activities. Many kids barely have time for home and family. Once we know our health is threatened we began to realize we must start taking better care of ourselves; quite a challenge in this frantic environment. It's not just a matter of outside pressures, we have internalized impossible expectations for ourselves as well. Many chronic disabilities come on gradually. Perhaps you have known for some time that things aren't right but you've ignored the warnings. Often it takes a frightening low before we are jarred into realizing we must make changes.

Caring for Children with Special Needs:
Chronic Illnesses
Doreen B. Greenstein, Ph.D.
Developmental Psychologist
Cornell University Extension Service Chronic illness is an "umbrella" term. It is not equivalent to a physical disability because, for example, children with cerebral palsy can be ill or well, independent of their disability. While it is likely that children will have a variety of health problems during infancy and childhood, these problems for most children are relatively mild and intermittent, and do not interfere with their development. For some children, however, chronic health conditions affect their everyday lives throughout their childhood. These children's parents and child care providers must also deal with the child's ongoing health problems on a daily basis. Chronic illness may limit a child's activities a lot or a little, and the limitations may come and go. It is impossible to determine a child's special care needs just from the name of an illness or diagnosis. Some factors perhaps are more important for children with chronic illnesses than for others because illness can interfere with their developmental needs. As one example, chronic illness can affect preschoolers as they become more aware of their bodies and mastery of the environment. A medical condition may necessitate parental control beyond the time when "typical" preschoolers are assuming part of the control.

Could there be a factor either unknown, or not fully understood, by both mainstream and alternative medicine, that can initiate much chronic illness including allergies? Could there be a very dangerous condition in the body that can cause virtually every other organ of the body to malfunction? Could 85% of the population have this undetected condition? The answer is decidedly yes to each of these questions. At the end of this article, surprising, new evidence will be revealed that this factor may even be a predictor of life expectancy.

It is a large list indeed; hence Baroody's quote that the Hiatal Hernia Syndrome is "the mother of all illness." I have been correcting HHS for 17 years and have seen proof of this connection in clients and/or myself over this span of time. I would urge anyone with any of these problems to add this to the protocol of things to do ASAP. Baroody strongly recommends correcting systemic pH imbalance with diet and supplements. I have found that the recent innovation of making water alkaline with a water ionizer to be one of the best methods of alkalinizing the body. (8) These water ionizers also make the water become wetter and a potent anti-oxidantgreater than fresh, wheat grass juiceand you can't become allergic to the water.

Related Diseases Association When you are diagnosed with a serious chronic autoimmune disease, it is normal to question your well-being and your mental ability to cope with the life changes that are part of living successfully-with any serious chronic illness. A few basic suggestions are crucial for you to consider in order for you to manage your illness better. Understand your illness and the treatment plan established by your physician. Ask questions of your doctor about your particular condition, especially what changes and symptoms you can expect to encounter. Following the treatment plan designed by your physician is vital. If you are unsure of the treatment plan, do not be afraid to ask questions or even get a second or third opinion. Ask questions about the side effects of medications and medical tests and the effect or benefit they will have on your condition. Let your doctor know if some new symptom is occurring. Persons with chronic illness often feel that their doctors are going to think they arechronic complainers if they are honest about how they are feeling. They may worry that their doctors will simply give them more prescriptions, adding to the many medications they are already taking. Another fear patients may have is that if they complain too much, their doctors may not want them as patients. It is much better to discuss what is going on and how it might be treated than to worry about what the doctor will think. In short, don't be intimidated by the medical proffession.

Holistic Help Helping You Manage Your Chronic Illness or Chronic Pain and Live Life to the Fullest Within Your Limits Addressing Alcoholism with Diet and Nutrition Alcoholism is a very complex problem that is rampant in our society and has many variables that need to be addressed simultaneously. The success rate with mainstream treatment options is poor at best. The nutrition and diet components are rarely addressed and most people are unaware of their extreme significance. It is not widely known that Bill Wilson, one of the founders of AA was aware of the importance of vitamins and hypoglycemia in the treatment of alcoholism. Before his death he was trying to educate physicians about these issues. (Null 95, Larson 92) After losing a son who had tried all the traditional approaches to alcoholism, Joan Larson researched with the passion of a mother on a mission and wrote a detailed comprehensive book ("7 Weeks to Sobriety") that emphasizes the importance of addressing diet and nutrition in the treatment of alcoholism.

DIET'S EFFECT ON SPONDYLITIS SYMPTOMS In recent years many specialized diets have gained popularity among some people with arthritis. To date, none of these claims have been substantiated by rigorously controlled studies. That said, some people find that certain foods trigger changes in symptoms - either for the better or the worse. If you find yourself noticing this type of pattern, try keeping a food diary for a few weeks to find out if indeed what you eat makes a difference or if you have food sensitivities. Whether a person is affected by a chronic illness or not, there are some straight forward guidelines that if followed, would lead to improved health and well-being for almost everyone.
  • Both calcium and alcohol affect the strength of the bones, and it is a well known fact that people with spondylitis are already at higher risk for osteoporosis, a dangerous thinning of the bones that can lead to fractures. Following a diet with adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D will help reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Alcoholic beverages can also weaken bones. Consuming more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases a person's chances of developing weakened bones. In addition, alcohol mixed with certain medications can cause serious side-effects to the gastro-intestinal tract and to major organs such as the liver and the kidneys.
