Adobe Acrobat Required Hope in the Unifying Language of Music: Teaching Sacred Music in a Secular Setting From the Spring 2005 Issue of Constellation By Thomas Lloyd I consider myself very fortunate to have as my daily work teaching the inspiring music of the Western choral-orchestral tradition to singers eager for the personal and communal nourishment this music can offer. However, a challenge in teaching this repertoire is that most of these works are explicitly based in the Christian tradition, and all three choirs I regularly direct are secular choirs. My two college choirs are made up of undergraduate students from Haverford and Bryn Mawr colleges, both founded by Quakers in the 19 th century, but now religiously quite diverse and secular. Jewish, Asian, and Islamic traditions are represented as well as Protestant and Catholic. My large community choir, on the other hand, is much more religiously (and racially) homogeneous (being overwhelmingly white and Christian), reflective of much of middle-American suburbia. The members of all my choirs relate to their faith traditions in various ways, ranging from committed to alienated.
Traditional Christmas concerts and the intersection of sacred and secular
Probing the distinction between secular and sacred in contemporary culture As independent organizations, my choirs are thankfully free from being caught in the crossfire of the culture wars waged in recent years in the public schools, with many choral musicians finding themselves in the eye of the storm. And yet, this very freedom begs the question: what does it mean to teach and perform sacred music with groups of people who do not share a common religious point of view? Can music composed from the wellspring of religious faith be understood and performed with authenticity from outside the point of view of that faith?

Teaching Mixed Ability Teens
Many teachers complain that they have problems dealing with classes that are mixed ability. The characteristics of such classes are:
  • While some students follow the lesson and are able to answer questions and do well in tests, others fall behind, don’t seem to understand and do badly in tests. While some students pay attention and are cooperative, others ‘misbehave’ and seem disinterested Teachers feel concerned that they are not challenging the high-achievers enough and at the same time are not giving enough help to those who are not doing as well. Teachers find it hard to ‘pitch’ their lessons at a level where all students can be engaged.
In the past teachers may well have said that the problem was just that some students were cleverer or simply ‘better’, but we now understand that the situation is more complex than that. Our students are indeed mixed in many ways. They are different in terms of their levels of:
  • Attention Interest Motivation Learning styles Types of intelligences Physiological needs Psychological needs Speed Maturity World knowledge Knowledge of and about English
And you can probably think of other areas in which they differ e.g. girls and boys who in their class may be the same age, but may behave and respond very differently, because girls generally mature more quickly than boys.

Find the total cost of the items in the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas."
Content/Procedure:
This project is designed to be used as a warmup activity during the 12 days preceding Christmas. On the first day give the students a copy of the student worksheet . Post the price of the first gift. Students should understand that they will need to purchase a partridge in a pear tree for each of the 12 days. On the chart students will enter 12 for the number of days given, 12 for the number of gifts needed, the price of one gift item posted by the teacher, the cost of this gift (12 x price), and the total to date. On the second day 2 turtledoves are given. This gift is given for 11 days, and so 22 doves are needed (2 x 11 = 22). The price of the gift (a pair of turtle doves) is posted by the teacher, and the students then calculate the cost of this gift (22 x price of one dove or 11 x the price of a pair of doves). The total to date will be the sum of the cost for days 1 and 2.

Introduction
Background: Religious Liberty in America Prayer in Public School Religion in the Curriculum ... Education Religion in the Public Schools Teaching About Religious Holidays General Rule: Teachers must be careful not to cross the line between teaching about religious holidays (which is permitted) and celebrating religious holidays (which is not). Celebrating religious holidays in the form of religious worship or other practices is unconstitutional. Teaching about a holiday will be constitutional if it furthers a genuine secular program of education, is presented objectively, and does not have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion. The U. S. Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on this subject.
Please see also ADL's companion piece: The December Dilemma: Guidelines for Public Schools During the December Holidays.
May religious symbols be used as teaching aids in the classroom? Yes. Religious symbols such as crosses, creches and menorahs may be used as teaching aids in the classroom provided that the symbols are displayed as examples of the cultural and religious heritage of the holiday, and are temporary in nature.
May religious symbols be used as decorations?

Journal of Religion and Film Teaching Religion and Film by Paul V. M. Flesher and Robert Torry
Vol. 2, No. 3 December 1998 Teaching Religion and Film by Paul V. M. Flesher and Robert Torry Article [1] The course Film and Religion [2] Film has two main approaches to religion and so we divide the course into two sections. First, there are films on religious topics, which can be subdivided into biblical stories, such as The Ten Commandments (1956) and Jesus Christ, Superstar (1973), and religious stories, such as Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1973). Second, there are essentially secular films that use religious imagery and symbolism for a variety of purposes. These purposes include narrative structure (The Rapture [1991]), social commentary ( The Exorcist [1973]), and political persuasion ( When Worlds Collide [1951]). The films range from genre typesscience fiction, horror, westernto groups defined in religious termsmillennial films and Christmas movies. [3] In the first half of the semester, we focus on films that depict biblical stories, such as Salome (1922), The Ten Commandments, King of Kings (1951), Jesus Christ, Superstar
