    http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/christmas.ht
Subtopic: The Christmas Tree Grade Level: Author: Rayn Blair Background: The origin of the first Christmas tree dates back to the Middle Ages in Western Germany. The people during this time period participated in and watched dramatic plays called miracle and mystery plays. These plays were performed to teach the common people about religious truths that were contained in the bible. There were no printed books available, and pictures were scarce during this period of time. "As laymen joined with the clergy, the individual plays were arranged in a lengthy series or cycle throughout the church year" (Foley, pg. 39). In this way, peasants were taught about the Old and New Testaments of the bible. During the Christmas season, the Paradise play was presented. This play depicted Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. On stage was an evergreen tree, covered in apples, which showed Adam and Eve's sin and later banishment from the garden. The tree received particular attention because it was the only prop on the stage. This symbol remained firmly planted in the minds of spectators and actors. Later, after the plays "ceased to be performed in Germany" ( Foley, pg. 41), people began putting their own trees in their homes. This early Paradise tree had a lot of value to the Germans. By having the tree in their home they were able to teach their children the story of Adam and Eve. They taught this story through symbols. The evergreen tree symbolized immortality because it stays green all year. The apples on the Paradise tree symbolized Adam's sin. Round wafers and cookies were also added as decorations. They represented the fruits of redemption.

    THE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS
    The Sixth Word
Just the week before Christmas, I had a visitor. This is how it happened. I had just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door of the front room, and to my surprise, Santa Claus himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree. He placed his fingers over his mouth so I would not cry out. "What are you doing..." I started to ask, but the words choked up in my throat as I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know. He then answered me with a simple statement of "Teach the children." I was puzzled. What did he mean? He anticipated my question and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood there bewildered, Santa said again, "Teach the children. Teach them the old meaning of Christmas the meanings that Christmas nowadays has forgotten." I started to say, "How can I..." when Santa reached in the toy bag and pulled out a brilliant shiny star. "Teach the children the star was the heavenly sign of promise long ages ago. God promised a savior for the world and the star was a sign of the fulfillment of that promise. The countless shining stars at night one for each man - now show the burning hope of all mankind." Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and drew forth from the bag a glittering red Christmas tree ornament.

I did not invent this. Someone in the MathsSoc found it last year but I like it. Two brohters have a herd of cows. They sell each cow for as many Euro as there were cows in the herd initially. Then they divide the money as follows. First the older brother takes 10 Euro, then the younger brother takes 10 Euro, then they keep taking 10 Euro each in turns. Finally, on the younger brothers turn, there are less than 10 Euro left. After thinking for some time the older brother gives his belt to the younger, claiming that they are square now. How much was the belt worth?

    Germanic Music - Christmas Carols
By: Catherine Schmidt-Jones Summary: Two familiar Christmas carols are offered for elementary or preschool students to learn in German or English, along with background information about the carols and about Germanic Christmas traditions.
    Overview
      Ways to use these carols:
    • In music class, learn one or both carols in German and/or English. For a holiday-oriented social studies class, tell the students about the Germanic origins of Christmas trees and other Christmas greenery (see below ), then teach them "O Tannenbaum" in German and/or English. You may want to couple this with an art project involving Christmas trees or wreaths. This can be used as a lesson on Germanic culture and history or as part of a unit on different countries, traditions of various religions, or Christmas traditions around the world. For a religious-themed holiday lesson, relate the story of "Stille Nacht" ( below ), and then teach them the carol in German and/or English.
    A Familiar Religious Carol
    Introduction
When introducing this carol, you can emphasize that some of our most familiar traditional Christmas carols were originally written in German. If the students are likely to know many Christmas carols, you might want to play "name that tune" to see which of these tunes (all of which were originally written for German words) they recognize. If they won't know many of them, just play the most familiar ones and see if they know any words to them, or ask them to raise their hands if they recognize the tune: "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming", "Good Christian Men, Rejoice", "O Come, Little Children", "While By my Sheep", "From Heaven High I Come to You", "Christ was Born on Christmas Day (some children may know the "Joseph dearest, Joseph mine" words to this tune), "O Christmas Tree", "Silent Night".

What exactly are the "Twelve Days of Christmas?" The Twelve Days of Christmas are the twelve days between Christmas Day, December 25, and Epiphany, January 6. These twelve days were memorialized in a popular song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," written by a gentleman named Drennon. During the period 1558 to 1829, it was a crime to be a Catholic in England. Catholics were prohibited from any practice of their faith by law - private or public. Anyone caught with things that associated him with Catholicism, such as religious writings, would be severely punished. Devotion to the Catholic faith could get you imprisoned, hanged, or beheaded. Drennon wrote the "Twelve Days of Christmas" as one of the "catechism songs" to teach young Catholics the tenets of their faith in song, instead of in written form.

    The Twelve Days of Christmas
Dennis Bratcher The Twelve Days of Christmas are probably the most misunderstood part of the church year among Christians who are not part of liturgical church traditions. Contrary to much popular belief, these are not the twelve days before Christmas, but in the Western Church are the twelve days from Christmas until the beginning of Epiphany (January 6th; the 12 days count from December 25th until January 5th). The origin of the Twelve Days is complicated, and is related to differences in calendars, church traditions, and ways to observe this holy day in various cultures (see Christmas ). In the Western church, Epiphany is traditionally celebrated as the time the three Wise Men or Magi arrived to present gifts to the young Jesus (Matt. 2:1-12). In some cultures, especially Hispanic and Latin American culture, January 6th is observed as Three Kings Day, or simply the Day of the Kings (Span: la Fiesta de Reyes el Dia de los Tres Reyes , or el Dia de los Reyes Magos ; Dutch: Driekoningendag ). Even though December 25th is celebrated as Christmas in these cultures, January 6th is often the day for giving gifts. In some places it is traditional to give Christmas gifts for each of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Since Eastern Orthodox traditions use a different religious calendar, they celebrate Christmas on January 7th and observe Epiphany or Theophany on January 19th.

    The theology of Santa
Santa, as taught to most children, has most of the attributes of God: He is virtually omnipresent . He can visit hundreds of millions of homes in one night. He is omniscient . He monitors each child; he is all-seeing and all-knowing; he knows when they are bad and good. Although not omnipotent, he does have great powers. He can manufacture gifts for hundreds of millions of children, and deliver them in one night each to the correct child. He is all-good and all-just . He judges which children have shown good behavior and rewards them appropriately. Bad children are bypassed or receive a lump of coal. He is eternal He rewards good and punishes bad behavior. However, there are negative aspects to Santa's behavior that can damage a child's self-esteem: In practice, children are not rewarded with gifts according to their behavior; they receive presents according to the amount of money that their parents are willing or able to spend on them at Christmas time. A child may receive little or nothing from Santa because his/her parents are poor. Unfortunately, the child has probably adsorbed from the media and their friends only bad children get nothing from Santa. He/she might begin to look upon themselves as a bad person. This may well damage their self esteem.

    The Twelve Rules of Christmas
(Compiled by attorneys for The Rutherford Institute) Unfortunately, Christmas has become a time of controversy over what can or cannot be done in terms of celebrating the holiday. In order to clear up much of the misunderstanding, the following twelve rules are offered:
  • Public school students’ written or spoken personal expressions concerning the religious significance of Christmas (e.g., T-shirts with the slogan, "Jesus Is the Reason for the Season") may not be censored by school officials absent evidence that the speech would cause a substantial disruption. So long as teachers are generally permitted to wear clothing or jewelry or have personal items expressing their views about the holidays, Christian teachers may not be prohibited from similarly expressing their views by wearing Christmas-related clothing or jewelry or carrying Christmas-related personal items. Public schools may teach students about the Christmas holiday, including its religious significance, so long as it is taught objectively for secular purposes such as its historical or cultural importance, and not for the purpose of promoting Christianity.
