Teach the children . . . Late one Christmas Eve, I sank back, tired but content, into my easy chair. The kids were in bed, the gifts were wrapped, the milk and cookies waited by the fireplace for Santa. As I sat back admiring the tree with its decorations, I couldn't help feeling that something important was missing. It wasn't long before the tiny twinkling tree lights lulled me to sleep. I don't know how long I slept, but all of a sudden I knew that I wasn't alone. I opened my eyes, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw Santa Claus himself standing next to my Christmas tree. He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot just as the poem described him, but he was not the "jolly old elf" of Christmas legend. The man who stood before me looked sad and disappointed, and there were tears in his eyes. "Santa, what's wrong?" I asked, "Why are you crying?" "It's the children," Santa replied sadly. "But Santa, the children love you," I said.

How To Build Christmas Trees in Shenzen

Some of China's best investors teach me a lesson.

To read Henry Blodget's first dispatch from Hong Kong, click here Not a serious China investor In Hong Kong, between dumplings at Wang Fu and beer at the Foreign Correspondents' Club, I stopped by 2 Pacific Place to learn how professional investors invest in China. I met with some of the best. Beyond its reputation as a symbol of connection capitalism, the Carlyle Group is also an investment firm, and a big one at that. It manages $19 billion of assets and employs 300 people in 14 countries. The firm's strategy is to "leverage local insights," and it accomplishes this not only by having a local presence—Asia investments are managed out of offices in Bangalore, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Sydney, and Beijing—but by hiring natives. Both Carlyle managing directors I met, Wayne Wen-Sui Tsou of the Asia venture fund and Xiang-Dong (X.D.) Yang of the Asia buyout fund, are from China. Both have MBAs from Harvard, and Tsou also has an M.S. in electrical engineering and a J.D. Both have more than a decade of professional investment and Wall Street experience. Both control hundreds of millions of dollars and have armies of analysts scouring China for opportunities. Both, needless to say, are fabulously well-connected.

How to Teach Children the Meaning of Christmas
The Christmas season can be a wonderful time of family togetherness and goodwill, but the spirit of Christmas often gets lost in the rush to buy gifts and go to parties. You can easily teach your children about the true meaning of the holiday, though, by discussing the holiday's origins and planning appropriate activities. Steps: Discuss the origins of the holiday. What you tell your children will vary depending on your own religious background and spiritual attitude. Look for an age-appropriate book about the Christmas story, or ask your clergyman or clergywoman for some suggestions. Take your family to church or Sunday school, or whatever form of worship fits your personal belief system. Many churches lead up to Christmas with sermons and lessons on the meaning of the holiday, and often provide a range of family social activities that keep with the true spirit of Christmas. Try to "de-hype" and simplify Christmas. Meet with your family members, and ask them to help find ways to accomplish this goal, while still having a Christmas that will be fun for everyone. There may be compromises involved, especially at first.

How to Teach Kids the Meaning of Christmas
Christmas has come to be a time that many people dread because of the crowds and over-commercialism. Teach children early that Christmas has other meanings besides getting presents. Steps: Limit gift buying. Buy one gift per child. Buy religious gifts for Christmas if you are raising your children in a specific religious tradition. It will help them associate the holiday with religion rather than Santa. Volunteer as a family. Spend a day or an afternoon doing something to help those in need. It will give children a different perspective on things. Encourage and help children to make their own presents. Teach them that it's the thought and not the amount of money you spend that makes a gift special. Give a family donation to a worthy Christmas-related cause, such as Christmas Seals. Spend time doing activities together. Make ornaments, go caroling, read Christmas stories or watch Christmas movies.

    A Baby Just Like You
John Denver, J. Henry (c) 1975 The season is upon us now A time for gifts and giving And as the year draws to its close I think about my living The Christmas time when I was young, The magic and the wonder, But colors dull and candles dim, And dark my standing under O little Zachary, shining light You've set my soul to dreaming You've given back my joy in life And filled me with new meaning A Savior King was born that day, A baby just like you, And as the Magi came with gifts, I come with my gift too That peace on Earth fills up your time, That brotherhood surrounds you. That you may know the warmth of love, And wrap it all around you It's just a wish, a dream I'm told From days when I was young Merry Christmas, little Zachary Merry Christmas, everyone Merry Christmas, little Zachary Merry Christmas, everyone
All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth
Every body stops and stares at me These two teeth are gone as you can see I don't know just who to blame for this catastrophe! But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be! All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth! Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could with you "Merry Christmas." It seems so long since I could say, "Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!" Gosh oh gee, how happy I'd be, if I could only whistle (thhhh) All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth. Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could wish you "Merry Christmas!"

This is how it happened...I just finished the household chores for the night and was preparing to go to bed, when I heard a noise in the front of the house. I opened the door to the front room and to my surprise, Santa himself stepped out from behind the Christmas tree.
He placed his finger over his mouth so I would not cry out. "What are you doing?" I started to ask. The words choked up in my throat, and I saw he had tears in his eyes. His usual jolly manner was gone. Gone was the eager, boisterous soul we all know.
He then answered me with a simple statement.
    "TEACH THE CHILDREN!"
I was puzzled; what did he mean? He anticipated my question, and with one quick movement brought forth a miniature toy bag from behind the tree. As I stood bewildered, Santa said,
"Teach the children! Teach them the old meaning of Christmas. The meaning that now-a-days Christmas has forgotten."
Santa then reached in his bag and pulled out a FIR TREE and placed it before the mantle.

God is a giver, not a taker. Throughout Scripture, we find evidence of His great generosity towards His creation. From the beginning of time as we know it, when He called forth Creationwhen He gave existence to things that had never before existedwe can see the true heart of God. He literally gave of Himself to make each one of us. "The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being " (Genesis 2:7) . The very nature of God is to give, to create, and to bless His creation. Unfortunately, many of us are so self-absorbed and greedy for gain that we do not even have the eyes to see the countless gifts that God has already worked into our lives. Yet, God wants us to be givers too. He created us to be like Himto pour of ourselves into other people, and to reciprocate His love for us. God created us with the power to be able to give back to Him! When I really stop and think about this, it truly amazes methat Godthe sum of ALL good things, who holds ALL power and authority, would humble Himself in this way. He didn't make himself entirely independent of His creation, or set Himself up as a mere casual observer of humankind, though He certainly had the power to do so. Instead, He allowed Himself to love us to the point where our returned love would be a blessing to Him.

Teach Your Dog to Sing Christmas Carols
By Steve Dale for The Dog Daily
It was a dark and stormy night, three years ago on Christmas Eve, and I was walking down our street with my dogs Lucy and Chaser. It was a full-blown blizzard; the snow was falling from the sky by the ton, and the wind the gusting off the lake. The street lights were flickering, so it was nearly impossible to see anything much more than a few inches past your nose. Lucy did her business, and Chaser was finding just the right spot for his when I heard Christmas carolers. I had no idea where the chorus was, though they sounded close by. As I bent down to pick up after Chaser (after all, I am a responsible dog owner), I dropped Lucy's leash. Wearing heavy mittens, I didn't realize I had dropped the leash. I picked up the stuff and began to walk to my house. That's when I heard the carolers begin their next song, "Oh come all ye faithful, joyful and. . . woo-woof-woo." The woo-woof-woo was a dog. My dog, Lucy. I looked down and her leash was gone; I was only holding Chaser's leash. I followed the sounds of the chorus, with Lucy enthusiastically continuing to chime in. They weren't far, just down a walkway. "Is that your dog?" asked a chorus member.

Helping Young Children Keep the Christmas Spirit
By Isabel Johnson, The Early Childhood Educator Web Site
By the time some of us reach adulthood, the Christmas season has lost its magic, and instead, feels like something to get through. The to-do list, the gift list, and the hectic schedule of events overshadow the quiet, special moments that Christmas used to hold.
But as adults, we have the responsibility to give our children a better Christmas than the one that focuses on what we get, and what we can endure.
Children deserve a Christmas full of magic moments, deep meaning, and enduring rituals that they carry with them all their lives. The good cheer in our households will be remembered long after most of the presents are forgotten. We create the atmosphere of celebrating Christmas for our children.
It is up to us to plan and celebrate a meaningful Christmas. How to do this? Simple. Remember the true meaning of Christmas while you make your plans, and more importantly, as you celebrate this holy season. Here are some tips to help you rediscover the magic of Christmastime:
