61. Zazen And Christianity
Talk given by Yamada Roshi. Zen is not a religion, in the same sense that christianity is a religion. Therefore, there is no reason why christianity and zazen cannot coexist. Almost all Buddhist sects can be called religions. Zazen, however, is quite different in this respect. Quite simply, it is the core of all Buddhist sects.

Zazen and Christianity
The following article is a transcription of a talk given by Yamada Roshi on May 9, 1975 at San-un Zendo in Kamakura, Japan. This article is a copy of the transcription appearing in Maria Kannon Zen Center Newsletter, Volumne 4, Number 2; Winter, 1995; page 5. The address for the Maria Kannon Zen Center is P.O. Box 270494; Dallas TX 75227-0494.
I am often asked by Christians, especially Catholics, whether they can practice zazen, and still preserve the beliefs of Christianity. To that question, I usually answer that Zen is not a religion, in the same sense that Christianity is a religion. Therefore, there is no reason why Christianity and zazen cannot co-exist.
Almost all Buddhist sects can be called religions. Zazen, however, is quite different in this respect. Quite simply, it is the core of all Buddhist sects. As you know, there are many sects in Buddhism, but the core or essence of them all is the experience called satori or self-realization. The theories and philosophies of all the sects are but the clothing covering the core. These outer wrappings are of various shapes and colors, but what is inside remains the same. And the core, this experience, is not adorned with any thought or philosophy. It is merely a fact, an experienced fact, in the same way that the taste of tea is a fact. A cup of tea has no thought, no idea, no philosophy. It tastes the same to Buddhists as it does to Christians. There is no difference at all.

71. Gnostic Christianity.com. The Outlawed Logic/logos Teachings Of Jesus.
Devoted to the philosophy of the nonjudgmental process of reasoning.
http://www.gnosticchristianity.com
"True" Gnostic Christianity is an objective body of knowledge that Jesus taught. It is not a mystery religion or heretical cult. Gnostic Christianity teaches a non-judgemental "process" of reasoning. This new process, is justified by a natural principle that Jesus revealed and contemporary physics demonstrates is a scientific fact. Combining non- judgemental reasoning with the current judgemental process, expands our consciousness of reality. In this enlightened consciousness we are personally empowered to resolve all problems and as Paul said "live the good life as from the beginning He [God] had meant us to live it." (Eph 2:10) Evidence that Jesus taught a process of reasoning that could expand consciousness surfaces in Jn 8:31-32 jbv, where he says, "If you make my word your home… you will learn the truth and the truth will set you free [word or will of God is the English translation of the Greek term logos, which refers to the logic or reasoning of God]." And in Rm 12:2 (rsv) Paul said "do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind..." The Gnosis, or reasoning process, that Gnostic Christianity introduces, does not contradict Jesus' spiritually-centered public teachings. It documents what scholars refer to as Jesus' oral or logos/logic tradition, which he taught in private (Mk 4:33-34). These teachings elevate our reasoning mind to that of the will/reasoning of God. In this renewed mind, our reasoning supports spiritual values. This is the truth that can set us free. For when mind and spirit seek the same ends (syzygy) doing "on earth as it is in heaven" will no longer be an idealistic goal, it will be a practical reality. (Matt 6:10)

All Saints' Church, University Street, Belfast BT7 1HE, Northern Ireland info@allsaintsbelfast.org Welcome About All Saints' Activities ... Our Guestbook Welcome to All Saints' Church From Bryan Follis - Rector, All Saints' Church
Located in the heart of the university district, All Saints’ Church serves an area with a vibrancy, cosmopolitan flavour and cafe culture which is fairly unique in Northern Ireland. It is an exciting place to be and yet it is also a district with many problems.
Widespread alcohol and drug abuse... a business community completely indifferent to Jesus Christ... prostitution... a new generation of university students with no understanding of spiritual truth... and families who have no link with any church.
In All Saints’ Church, we are committed to evangelism and reaching out to those who do not know Jesus Christ. We give a high priority to Bible teaching which helps us to live out our faith under the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of life. Building relationships and forging a deep sense of community is another important aspect to the ministry of All Saints.
As you read more about All Saints’ Church, I trust that it interests you and inspires you to want to visit us. Above all, I long for it to draw you to want to know more about Jesus Christ.

77. Agnosticism And Christianity (1889)
The full text of Huxley's essay comparing the two systems of belief.
http://aleph0.clarku.edu/huxley/CE5/Agn-X.html
Agnosticism and Christianity Collected Essays V De Civ. Dei, xii.7. The present discussion has arisen out of the use, which has become general in the last few years, of the terms "Agnostic" and "Agnosticism." as to the truth of a particular [313] form of Theology, is another. With scientific Theology, Agnosticism has no quarrel. On the contrary, the Agnostic, knowing too well the influence of prejudice and idiosyncrasy, even on those who desire most earnestly to be impartial, can wish for nothing more urgently than that the scientific theologian should not only be at perfect liberty to thresh out the matter in his own fashion; but that he should, if he can, find flaws in the Agnostic position; and, even if demonstration is not to be had, that he should put, in their full force, the grounds of the conclusions he thinks probable. The scientific theologian admits the Agnostic principle, however widely his results may differ from those reached by the majority of Agnostics. He declares that he has prejudged certain conclusions, and looks upon those who show cause for arrest of judgment as emissaries of Satan. It necessarily follows that, for him, the attainment of faith, not the ascertainment of truth, is the [314] highest aim of mental life. And, on careful analysis of the nature of this faith, it will too often be found to be, not the mystic process of unity with the Divine, understood by the religious enthusiast; but that which the candid simplicity of a Sunday scholar once defined it to be. "Faith," said this unconscious plagiarist of Tertullian, "is the power of saying you believe things which are incredible."
