Since I had been involved in a Christian group on campus, however, I felt I had learned a great deal about my faith. As a science major I had completed most of my requirements for my degree, and I was looking forward to taking electives in my major of animal ecology. However, I still had a couple of hours in humanities to fulfill, not my most favorite subject. While I was looking for a humanities elective, I came across an English course entitled "Spiritual Wastelands." I remember thinking to myself, "That looks interesting. I wonder what spiritual wastelands this course is about?" With my newfound interest in spiritual things, I decided to enroll. On the first day of class, I was horrified the minute the instructor walked into the room. He wore an old Army fatigue jacket, a blue work shirt open to the middle of his hairy chest, ratty blue jeans, sandals, long tangled hair, and a beard. He punctuated his appearance with a leather necklace containing what looked like sharks’ teeth. To make it worse, he proceeded to go around the room and ask every student why he or she took this course. I don’t really reember what the other students said but when he got around to me, I sheepishly replied that I was a Christian and that I was interested in knowing what kind of spiritual wastelands he was going to talk about. Immediately, with a look of malevolent glee, he exploded: "You’re a

The Bud dhist Conn ect ion Although a connection between 4th century Nazoreanism (Manichaeanism) and Buddhism is irrefutable, the connection between 1st Century Nazoreanism and Buddhism is a bit more difficult to verify. There is, however, one important clue to this relationship found in the Nag Hamaddhi library in The Apocalypse of Peter: "As the Savior was sitting in the temple in the three hundredth (year) of the covenant and the agreement of the tenth pillar..." This is most likely a reference to King Asoka (239-23 B.C.), the third emperor of the Mauryan dynasty of India. He came to the throne in 264 BC., aproximately 300 years before the public ministry and death of Yeshu (Jesus, circe 35 A.D.). Asoka renounced war, became a Buddhist and erected ten pillars inscribed with his edicts, one of which said: "Here (in my domain) no living beings are to be slaughtered or offered in sacrifice." [Aramaic Version] , Ten years having passed, our Lord the king Piyadassi, decided to instruct men in Dhamma. Since then, evil among men has diminished in the world. Among those who have suffered it has disappeared, and there is joy and peace in the whole world. And even in another matter, that which concerns eating, our Lord the king kills very few animal. Seeing this the rest of the people have also ceased from killing animals. Even those who catch fish, their activity has been prohibited. Similarly those that were without restraint have now learnt restraint. Obedience to mother and father, and elders, and conformity with the obligations implied in this, is now in practice. There are no more trials for men of piety. Thus the practice of Dhamma is of value to all men, and it will continue to be so.
