Mark Twain This witty, caustic work is Mark Twain's extended attack on Christian Science and its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, who he once described as the "queen of frauds and hypocrites." In 1898, when he set out to write this book, Twain feared that Christian Science would spread so rapidly that it would control Congress by the 1930's.
Twain, having suffered the intense sorrow and anguish of the death of two of his children, and later of his beloved wife, Olivia, in 1904, reacted savagely to the claim of Christian Science that pain, sickness, and death do not exist. When Harper's refused to publish Christian Science in 1903, Twain interpreted the rejection as suppression and wrote, "The situation is not barren of humor. I had been doing my best to show in print that the Xn Scientist cult has become a power in the land - well, here is the proof: it has scared the biggest publisher in the Union."
In this offensive against Mrs. Eddy, Twain analyzes her greed, her lust for power, her self-dedication, and her incoherent writing. He examines the rules and by-laws of the church with all the strength of his formidable debating skills.

Out of that meeting came a generally raised consciousness of the issues facing women in scientific careers and a document that came to be called the Baltimore Charter. The preamble of the Charter begins with these statements: "Women and men are equally capable of doing excellent science." "Diversity contributes to, rather than conflicts with, excellence in science." "Current recruitment, training, evaluation and award systems often prevent the equal participation of women." "Formal and informal mechanisms that are effectively discriminatory are unlikely to change by themselves. Both thought and action are necessary to ensure equal participation for all." "Increasing the number of women in astronomy will improve the professional environment and improving the environment will increase the number of women."

On a winter's day in New England in 1866, a frail middle-aged woman lay gravely ill with serious internal and spinal injuries. Her Protestant pastor had stopped by "to prepare her for the worst" (Robert Peel, The Years of Discovery: 1821-1875). After he left she opened her Bible and began to read Matthew 9:2: And behold, they brought to Him a man sick of the palsy.. "Quite suddenly she was filled with the conviction that her life was in Godthat God was the only Life..At that moment she was healed....It was as simple as that. In a moment of vision she saw all being as spiritual, divine, immortal, wholly good. There was no room for fear or pain or death, nor room for the limits that men define as matter" (Ibid.). Thus began a remarkable 50-year odyssey, culminating in the writing of a now-famous book and the establishment of a now-respectable worldwide Church. The woman was Mary Baker Eddy; the book is Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures, and the religious organization is called today "The Church of Christ, Scientist," whose members are known simply as "Christian Scientists." Unable to humbly accept the simple fact of her instantaneous healing, Mrs. Eddy began to make a thoughtful and reflective search of Scripture, without reference to Protestant theology, historic Christianity, the commentaries of Holy Fathers, or anything or anyone else. She was convinced that Christian healing was a misunderstood "science," and she set herself the task of outlining its methodology.

Overhaul of Monitor, layoffs are discussed
By Donovan Slack, Globe Correspondent, 2/5/2004 Officials of the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston told employees yesterday that ailing finances are forcing them to restructure church operations, including laying off top-level managers, possibly ceasing production of some publications, moving others overseas, and overhauling operations at the Christian Science Monitor. ADVERTISEMENT "Overall contributions to the Mother Church have not kept pace with the demand," church treasurer Walter D. Jones said in a speech to employees at the church's headquarters on Huntington Avenue and broadcast to others over the Internet. "We must bring expenses in line." The church plans to review the operations of the printed edition of the Christian Science Monitor newspaper and may begin charging for subscriptions to the online version, according to church officials and an employee at the Monitor. The online edition records 4 million unique site visits per month, while the print edition, published five days a week, has about 70,000 subscribers. "What that suggests to me is a whole lot of people like what they get from the Christian Science Monitor, and those people are reading it online," Virginia S. Harris, chairwoman of the church's board of directors, said in an interview after yesterday's meeting. "We have to take a look at how people are getting their news and want to engage with Monitor journalism."

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE IN UTAH The Church of Christ, Scientist, founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy "to reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing," has been in Utah for over a century. Its state history began in July 1891 when Mrs. Eddy sent one of her followers, Mrs. N. A. Bagley of Chicago, to Salt Lake City to organize a branch church. This led to the formation of the first Utah congregation, the present First Church of Christ, Scientist, Salt Lake City, incorporated on 27 August 1891. Mrs. Bagley returned to Chicago after the church was started. The small group initially met at various sites, including members' homes, the Odd Fellows Hall, and the Jewish synagogue. In 1897 the thirty-three local members voted to build their own church, located at 352 East 300 South. The Richardsonian Romanesque structure was planned by architect Walter E. Ware, who also designed the First Presbyterian Church, St. Mark's Hospital, the Old Masonic Temple, and many other structures in Salt Lake City. On Sunday, 27 November 1898, the new church was dedicated, according to church policy, free of debt. At least 1,000 people crowded into the church, which was designed for a seating capacity of 650. Christian Scientists from several nearby states traveled to Salt Lake City for the occasion. Services were opened by Mrs. Frank D. Kimball, acting First Reader in the absence of Lewis B. Coates, who was back east on church business with Mrs. Eddy. Mrs. Kimball read a letter from Mrs. Eddy praising the dedication of the Utah members. Thus began the thirty-second Christian Science branch church, which was restored in the 1970s and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
