Believing can be deadly. A Skeptic Looks at Christian Science
By Jeffrey Shallit
Department of Computer Science,
University of Waterloo
What is Skepticism? The modern skeptic movement is devoted to scientific examination of extraordinary claims, particular involving paranormal events. The skeptic does not necessarily deny claims of ESP, dowsing, astrology, UFO's, ghosts, poltergeists, channeling, faith healing, near-death experiences, etc., but believes that such claims are and should be subject to scientific inquiry. Furthermore, the more unusual a claim is, the more evidence must be presented to support that claim. This credo of the modern skeptic movement can be briefly summarized as Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary proof. Famous modern skeptics include James Randi (The Amazing Randi), a professional magician and MacArthur prize winner, and Martin Gardner, former Scientific American columnist and author of many books. Magazines such as the Skeptical Inquirer and Skeptic represent the skeptical point of view.

What's in a name? The latest bot worm has me wondering.
By csmonitor.com staff Editor's note: Contributor J. Johnson is our manager of Web technology. The newest piece of malware on the 'net to make headlines is the obscurely-coined Zotob MS05-039 worm. MS05-039 refers to the Microsoft Security Bulletin issued on August 9, 2005 that announced a vulnerability in the Windows "Plug and Play" code that "could allow remote code execution and elevation of privilege". In other words, the wily attacker could write a program to make an administrator account on a machine without the latest Microsoft security patch, and proceed to turn said machine into a virus-spawning malware drone which then spends all of its energy trying to infect other unpatched machines. If this B-movie scenario is pretty ho-hum these days to the virus-watching literati, at least the names are becoming more entertaining. For instance, last year's blockbuster virus called itself "Sasser", a perky, in-your-face, taunting name for a bug with lots of personality. Before Sasser, we were treated to the video game-inspired "Blaster" - not an original title, but worthy of the thumbmasters who created it. And who could forget "Mydoom"?

Opinion from the May 03, 2004 edition Grade inflation is not a victimless crime By Jay A. Halfond I often wonder what the public thinks when reading the periodic headlines about grade inflation at Ivy League universities - like last week's Princeton faculty decision to limit the number of A's it gives undergraduates. After all, these elite schools attract the top 1 percent of the general college-bound population - could so many high grades really be that scandalous? Why would these heartless administrators want to punish their students by suggesting they don't deserve their grades? But something important has happened throughout higher education in the past generation. Students at all academic institutions have come to expect high grades as an entitlement. I even had a student who had received an A- ask what she'd done "wrong."

Print this page History The founder of Christian Science was Mary Ann Morse Baker Glover Patterson Eddy, born in Bow, New Hampshire in 1821, to Mark and Abigail Baker. Her parents were members of the Congregationalist church which upheld a strict doctrine of predestination that unsettled young Mary. "The doctrine of unconditional election or predestination, greatly troubled me: for I was unwilling to be saved, if my brothers and sisters were to be numbered among those who were doomed to perpetual banishment from God" (Mary Baker Eddy, Retrospection and Introspection, Christian Science Discovered In 1866, while still married to Daniel Patterson, she discovered the principle of Christian Science after a serious fall allegedly brought her near death. Her account of the severity of the injuries was contradicted by the attending physician. Nevertheless, the principles "discovered" during this time were to be the basis of Christian Science. In 1875, her work Science and Health was published with the additional Key to the Scriptures added in 1883. For this work she claimed divine revelation.

A new investing tool screens for firms tied to countries singled out by the US government as 'sponsors' of terrorism. But will it sully some upstanding firms? By Laurent Belsie Does your portfolio "support" terrorism? It's a shocking thought, but not as far-fetched as it sounds. Even firms with good reputations reach into dark corners. Take Royal Dutch/Shell. Although highly regarded for its environmental and human rights stances, the oil giant is drilling in Iran. Or consider Swedish carmaker Volvo. Despite its nice-guy image, it has sold trucks to Iraq.
