action carried out by the parents, it is the result of deliberate inaction. Whether the sacrifice be the result of a deliberate action or inaction, it is done because the religious beliefs of the parents are considered more important than the child. One of the definitions which Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary gives for the term 'sacrifice' is "destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else." Far from being the rhetorical abuse of language alleged by religious critics, the term 'child-sacrifice' appears to be both accurate and appropriate for describing faith-healing-related deaths of children. Not only do certain parents think their religious beliefs are more important than the lives of their children, the State of Ohio thinks so too! The Ohio juvenile code at 2151.03(e) makes the astonishing claim that:

Goin' to the dogs
By Tom Regan I could have more easily answered a question about an effective exit strategy from Iraq. Reggie's kind of a, well, half this and half that, with another quarter of something thrown in for good measure. So it was with some interest I noted a piece in the journal Science about a group of Seattle geneticists using DNA to "uncover the roots of dogs' family trees." The Oregonian reports that the researchers found such large genetic differences among breeds that "DNA markers alone correctly identified the breed of 409 of the dogs." They also discovered four distinct breeding groups.

OPINION from the July 30, 1999 edition Editor's note The Christian Science Monitor archive includes stories dating back to 1980. Some early articles lack sufficient formatting, and will appear as one long column without paragraph breaks. We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. A millennium is a millenium is a milennium Stephen Lapointe BOSTON - There are many soaring hopes for the new millennium. I have a rather humble one: that we learn to spell the word correctly. Unfortunately, in the Scrabble Game of Life, there is an apparent shortage of N's. I recall an exchange with a decorated television producer who was developing a documentary on the dawn of the 20th century. Somewhat surprisingly, the program proposal had been rebuffed several times. Finally this producer, a fastidious Yale graduate, handed me the proposal's cover letter. And there it was, in the opening paragraph: "Due to the surge of interest in the millenium [sic], this program is guaranteed to reach a substantial viewership...." When I alerted the producer to the error, she was utterly dumbfounded, as if told by a reliable source that the sun had been extinguished.

News: Siding with an antiabortion doctor, the FDA rejects easy access to a morning-after pill. By Chris Mooney September/October 2004 Issue

Disaster evacuation plans throughout the US assume that people own a car. Too bad for the 23 million Americans who don't. Advertisements

Advertisements In late 2002, women’s groups sounded an alarm over the appointment of Dr. W. David Hager and two other physicians—all opponents of abortion—to the FDA’s Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee. Although this move involved only 3 of the 11 seats on the advisory panel, advocates from these groups were concerned that these new members would hamper women’s access to birth control. And indeed, this year Hager has played a little-noticed but central role in stopping the over-the-counter (OTC) sale of the morning-after pill known as Plan B. Hager, a Kentucky-based obstetrician-gynecologist, says that he is being miscast as "some kind of powerful individual" and complains that, with a couple of exceptions, journalists have "never interviewed me before they’ve written about me." He’s referring to a spate of stories citing his opposition to the so-called "abortion drug" RU486, his attack on the birth control pill for promoting promiscuity, and a book in which he advises Bible readings to relieve premenstrual syndrome. While his critics say these activities show that he is bringing a religious bias to scientific decisions on new drugs, he disagrees. "I make diagnoses based on evidence-based medicine," he says, noting that "83 percent of patients in this country say that they prefer that their physicians pray with them or counsel them" according to their religious beliefs. "Your faith is an integral part of your life and everything that you do," he adds.

CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
(CHRISTIAN SCIENCE)
Because of its espousal of spiritual healing and its affirmation that Christian Science is incompatible with reliance upon materia medica, the Church of Christ, Scientist has been one of the most important of the nonconventional religions in America as well as a matter of intense controversy from the day of its founding.
THE FOUNDER: The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1919) who as a young woman had been continually hobbled with poor health. In 1862 she learned of Dr. Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a mental healer in Portland, Maine. In October of that year she traveled to Portland and placed herself under his care. She soon experienced some relief of her symptoms which she ascribed to his efforts. She became his student and took the opportunity, when offered, to pass them on to others. While grateful for his help and generous with words of praise at the time of his death in 1866, she was disturbed by the periodic return of her ilness and the conflicts of Quimby's ideas and those she found in the bible. Two weeks after Quimby's death, on February 1, 1866, she slipped on an icy pavement. Three days later while slowly and painfully recuperating, the Biblical Truth was imparted to her and her health was restored immediately. That event marked the beginning of Christian Science. She quickly saw the conflict between the newly discovered truth and some of Quimby's ideas and further study led her to abandon Quimby's mental and magnetic teachings altogether. She had realized that God was the only Life, and that Life was the only reality of being. There was no healing agent, as Quimby taught, either magnetic force or mind, only the unity with God in which there was no room for disease.

We apologize for the aesthetics and hope that the information will still be of value to you. The end of long airport lines is approaching the runway Ruth Walker Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor TORONTO - Details are everything. And time really is money. It's hard to imagine where these old saws could be more apt than in aviation - especially since global air travel is expected to double, roughly, between the beginning of this new decade and its end. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a standards-setting body of the United Nations, with headquarters in Montreal, is abuzz over new technologies being counted on to unclog air-travel congestion. At the "macro" end these developments include satellite-based air-traffic control systems; at the "micro" end they include "smart cards" that will let you breeze through passport controls with the nonchalance of an urban commuter swiping a transit pass at a subway turnstile.
