Buzkashi - an Afghan tradition thrives
A favorite Afghan pastime reflects the values of the country: strength, courage, and horsemanship. By Lucian Kim The dozens of turbaned horsemen on their prancing steeds assemble on a dusty field on the outskirts of this city in northern Afghanistan. Despite their shouts and cracking whips, however, the riders' intent is peaceful. As they do on most Friday afternoons after prayer, the horsemen have gathered for a friendly match of buzkashi, or goat grabbing. Across northern Afghanistan, as well as in neighboring Central Asian states, this winter sport has been an enduring pastime for centuries. The object of the game is for a member of two competing teams to pick up the carcass of a decapitated calf or goat from the ground, carry it around a flag, and return it to a circle in front of the judges. It is not surprising that a game that prizes courage, horsemanship, and brute strength would be one of the most popular forms of public entertainment here. Buzkashi is sport reduced to its simplest form, with no contrived side-shows or complicated rules. And, as many things are done in Afghanistan, the seeming chaos of a buzkashi match actually follows a deliberate system that is not always obvious to the foreign observer.

The Christian Science Monitor is an international newspaper published daily, Monday through Friday. Started in by Mary Baker Eddy , the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist , the paper does not use wire services and instead relies largely on its own reporters in bureaus in eleven countries around the world. Reporters at one time were drawn largely from church members but this no longer holds true. Despite its name, the Monitor was not established to be a religious -themed paper, nor does it directly promote the doctrine of its patron church. However, at its founder Eddy's request, a daily religious article has appeared in every issue of the Monitor . Eddy also required the inclusion of " Christian Science " in the paper's name, over initial opposition by some of her advisors who thought the religious reference might repel a secular audience. The Monitor's inception was, in part, a response by Eddy to the infamous yellow journalism of her day. Shortly after Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was published, the book's popularity caught the attention of

The church was founded by Mary Baker Eddy in following her own personal healing experience, which she believed to be the result of her Christian faith. The Bible and Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures are together the church's key doctrinal sources. Christian Science is widely known for its publications, especially the Christian Science Monitor , a daily newspaper published internationally in print and on the Internet . The Church is controversial for its encouragement of prayer for healing in lieu of modern medicine , its traditionally authoritarian practices, and its doctrinal deviations from orthodox Christianity Christian Science has no connection with Scientology , which was founded about 75 years after Christian Science and which is not based on Christianity.

Christian Science A non-Christian Religion The main teaching though the Holy Scripture is how man fell became sinful and is in need of redemption. That God would one day send a savior that would accomplish this by bringing man back into a one to one relationship with Him. One would think that if a group calls themselves Christian this is what they would uphold. This is not true for Christian Science, which is neither Christian nor science. The founder Mary Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire, July 16, 1821 to a devout religious family (Congregationalists) with 5 other children. Her father, Mark Baker, was a Calvinist whom she strongly disagreed with later on in life. The disagreements were on the main points of Scripture such as judgment and eternal punishment. From this rejection of Scripture and circumstances of ill health she eventually sought out another understanding to the Bible. Mary was married at the young age of 22 to George Glover in 1843 in Charleston, South Carolina. This was her only happy marriage that tragically lasted slightly longer than half a year as her husband died of yellow fever. She was left a widow, while being pregnant.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
Christian Science, a homegrown American religious and medical sect, was founded by Mary Baker. She suffered from a variety of ailments—lung, liver and stomach problems, backaches, colds, fevers, "nervousness," and "depression"—and had tried a variety of remedies, including dietary cures and homeopathy, when in 1862, she traveled to Portland, Maine, to receive treatment from Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, a healer. After Quimby effected a cure through his system of massage, encouragement, and "mental healing," she became his student and associate. Shortly after Quimby's death in 1866, she slipped and fell on an icy street. Confined to bed and given little chance of recovery, she began reading the Bible. After a period of solitary meditation, she was overwhelmed by the idea that her life was in God and that God was the only life. From this revelation followed her healing; she got out of bed, dressed, and walked out of her sickroom, to the amazement of those in attendance. In 1875, Mary Baker published
