School defends slavery booklet
Critic says text is 'window dressing' By T. KEUNG HUI, Staff Writer Students at one of the area's largest Christian schools are reading a controversial booklet that critics say whitewashes Southern slavery with its view that slaves lived "a life of plenty, of simple pleasures." Leaders at Cary Christian School say they are not condoning slavery by using "Southern Slavery, As It Was," a booklet that attempts to provide a biblical justification for slavery and asserts that slaves weren't treated as badly as people think. Principal Larry Stephenson said the school is only exposing students to different ideas, such as how the South justified slavery. He said the booklet is used because it is hard to find writings that are both sympathetic to the South and explore what the Bible says about slavery. "You can have two different sides, a Northern perspective and a Southern perspective," he said.

The leadership of Cedar Park Christian is continually endeavoring to develop the best possible learning environment for our students. We believe the best environment is one in which children are motivated to learn from a Christian perspective through loving encouragement and positive input. A critical aspect of a Christian education is that students learn to view life from a Christian perspective rather than a secular one. Education is never neutral, just as teachers never are. The curriculum and the teachers at Cedar Park Christian Schools are decidedly different from public schools in that Christian Truth is the basis of all courses. Just as secular schools omit Christian philosophy, Cedar Park works at integrating Christian perspectives and philosophy into each course. Secular schools assert that teachers' personal values and life-styles have little influence on students, while Cedar Park's teachers see themselves as definite Christian models to students. Cedar Park does not profess to be the answer for every child and family. In a society that offers a plethora of choices to consumers, Cedar Park's intent is to provide the highest quality of academic programs in a decidedly loving, encouraging, positive Christian setting. Cedar Park does not take the place of parents or the church. This is a central issue because the role of any educational institution, while providing excellent academics, should be to reinforce family and church values, not usurp their authority.

>English Version KEIMEI GAKUEN
Bringing The World Together
Keimei Gakuen, an institution open to foreign and exchange students, is sanctioned by the Ministry of Education to provide individually based education to Japanese students who have studied abroad. to The Keimei Philosophy to School Life Keimei Gakuen was established in April, 1940 in the home of Takasumi Mitsui, at Daimachi, Akasaka, Tokyo. Its objectives were to educate returning international students in those aspects of Japanese education which they lacked in their studies abroad, to encourage a broad, international outlook, and to emphasize the study of English and other foreign languages. Later the school was expanded to include Japanese students who had not lived overseas. During the Second World War, the school was moved to its present location on the outskirts of Tokyo on land donated by Baron Hachiroemon Mitsui, the father of Keimeifs founder. The school is situated on a high plateau, surrounded by many trees, with a beautiful view of the Tama River. The school complex is comprised of seven buildings, including a modern gymnasium, athletic fields and tennis courts. Founderfs Message Students who are educated abroad are a precious treasure to the nation. The studentsf overseas experiences richly benefit their native country. Since more than 6,000 students return to Japan from studies abroad each year, I feel the uniqueness of their situation should not be ignored. In this belief I am supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education which has appointed Keimei Gakuen to aid these greturning studentsh in their readjustment to life in Japan, both academically and culturally.
