CHILDREN AND CHORES
Many parents require their children to do chores around the house. For some families, the process of teaching children what to do and how to do it is an easy one. In other families, getting children to do chores regularly and completely can be a problem. It is a good idea for parents to teach their children at an early age that all family members must work together to make the household run, and that each person must do his or her share of the work load. This can be done by beginning a program of chores and responsibilities when children are young. Chores are beneficial for children - even very young ones. Being responsible for doing chores teaches children many important skills such as cooperation and responsibility. Chores also teach children about fairness and commitment. The skills and values learned by doing chores will benefit children throughout their lives.
What To Do There are many things that parents can do to encourage their children to do household chores. Here are some suggestions: *Start early.

About Children's Chores
It is never too early or too late to begin teaching children to help with chores. Involving children in family chores helps them feel they are a part of the family and that people need their help. Working also helps children develop skills such as keeping their word, planning ahead, following through, organizing their time, and doing several tasks at once. Doing chores helps children become responsible and feel good about themselves and about helping others.

Who hasn't heard a chore horror story from somebody in the family? You know the kind, " I used to wake up at 4:30 every morning and feed the pigs, gather eggs, paint the barn, chop firewood, wrestle bears and then walk 15 miles to nursery school!" These inflated tidbits of the past have really given chores a bad reputation. No wonder kids wince at the word. But the assignments of chores are important in the development of children.

Wignarajah says in addition to teaching children the life skills they will need when they grow older, chores also teach children responsibility, which often comes with a sense of accomplishment when a job is done.
But when can a parent start assigning chores? Students at the pre-school are as young as 3 - not too young to begin learning, says Wignarajah. Juanita Blaz, mother of five girls ages 20 months to 15 years, and volunteer director of Island Girl Power, says she had her daughters doing chores as young as the age of 2.

Author unknown January 25, 2000 Q. How can I get my children to save at least part of their allowances?
    • We opened up a savings account and went in on a weekly basis to make a deposit. The children had books and got the amount electronically stamped each time a contribution was made. We also took the time to show them how much interest they could earn if they kept going up. -A.B., Fort Wayne, Ind.
    • I have four children and have just started giving them an allowance for weekly jobs. The first few weeks, they spent all the money they received at one time. I decided to play "bank." I keep a running total of their money, adding each week's allowance to the grand total. When they want money, I have some control over what they spend it on. But I subtract it from their "account." They are less likely to spend it on incidentals when they have to ask for it. -P.R., Reading, Pa.

How should I teach my child to do chores? Begin by doing activities together and making the experience fun. Be sure to match the job to the ability of your child so that he or she can be successful. Also, choose chores that have meaning for children. Take time and patience in working with children until they learn a new chore. Even if you could do the chore much faster and better, give children the opportunity to learn. Children aren't born with the ability to do jobs quickly and efficiently. In the beginning it may take more time and work on your part to have children help you. If you send them out to play while you do all the chores, they don't learn to work-instead, they learn that they are not really needed. After you have worked together with children and feel they are ready to do a job alone, let them know you are available if they need help and fade into the background. Make sure children have kid-sized equipment for their work. Praise their efforts more for the contribution they are making than the quality of their work.

    Children and Chores
Taking responsibility for chores is an important lesson that parents teach their children. Chores help children understand that living in a family involves work and that every member shares the responsibility and the benefits. Through chores, children become more responsible and self-reliant; chores build self-esteem. As their confidence blossoms with each new task mastered, children learn necessary life skills and the ability to prioritize, organize, and use time wisely. Play is the real work of young children. However, at about 12 months of age, 25% of children will imitate their parents as they do chores. Give your child a small broom, toy hammer or dust cloth so he can work with tools he sees you use.
