COMPETITIONS IN CHOREOGRAPHY, while not wildly popular in the United States, can really make a difference to budding choreographers outside the U.S. A young choreographer in Europe or Russia who wants to make her mark must first attract attention at a competition like the Bagnolet platform near Paris, the International Choreographic Festival in Hanover, Germany, or the Golden Mask in Moscow. The Bagnolet platform alone brought major dance artists like Philippe Decoufle, Maguy Marin, and Angelin Preljocaj into the public eye, and Hanover gave us Marco Goecke. Last November, when more than twenty-five companies gathered at the festival, there were two signs that dance is more accepted here than in tire United States. First, the local media came out to cover the event, and second, there was no dearth of male dancers or choreographers. In fact, one of the strongest entries was from TAD, a group of three men and one woman from nearby Grodno. In The Smoke of Buenos Aires, choreographed by Dmitry. Kurakulov, the men wore trench coats and dragged on cigarettes while they spun, flipped, and generally plagued a feisty woman in a slinky green dress. The dance had a self-mocking wit and daring that would have delighted audiences anywhere.

THE NATIONAL COLLEGE CHOREOGRAPHY INITIATIVE
Overview by Suzanne Callahan For all projects, public involvement outside of the academic community was critical. Colleges were to make substantial efforts to involve the general public beyond the performance of the dance work itself. Activities such as panel discussions, lectures, open rehearsals, school performances, and video showings would allow students and general audiences access to the history of dance and the process of creating choreography. Scholars, educators, critics, historians, and artists would inform the public presentation of the dances. Finally, it was hoped that other organizations would join these collaborations, including musical ensembles, community-based dance organizations, presenters and other colleges within the particular state. Measured Steps
  • In the past year, 48 artists and ensembles have worked in every state in the country plus the District of Columbia to bring dance of the highest caliber to students; many of these guest choreographers brought in additional professional artists from their own companies to assist with teaching and reconstructions.
  • A total of 43 dances have been restaged or reconstructed and another 44 new works have been created, as colleges opted to capitalize on this rare funding opportunity by commissioning multiple works.

Why is it Important? At Key Stage 3 the emphasis is on increasing student’s awareness and knowledge of health and fitness as well as developing their creativity, confidence and self-esteem.  Dance also provides students with the opportunity to develop other key skills such as teamwork, leadership and problem solving.  Dance teaches students analytical and interpretive vocabulary and encourages them to be able to voice their opinions and interpretations with accuracy.
What do we Do? At Key Stage 3 students are taught dance as part of their Physical Education.  At Rickmansworth School in Years 7, 8 and 9 in P.E students are taught on a rotational system to maximise the variety of sports each student experiences.  Dance is part of this rotation.  The students are divided into separate male and female groups.  If you would like more information concerning this please see the P.E web page. As students progress through Yrs 7, 8 and 9 the schemes of work challenge their creativity, originality, analysis, performance, response, and understanding in dance.

Jennifer Hart is a member of the versatile and innovative Minnesota Dance Theatre under the direction of former ABT principle dancer Lise Houlton. Hart trained at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, MDT, San Francisco Ballet and on full scholarship at Pacific Northwest Ballet where she performed and toured with the company in several productions. For several years, post-study, she turned away from the classical world preferring to appeal to her renegade side by performing with the avant-garde theatrical dance group Ballet of the Dolls under the direction of Myron Johnson. In 1996, she co-founded Les Femmes Cabaret, an unconventional trio sought after by nightclubs and other urban venues. This project ran for five years. She eventually succumbed to her classical impulses and returned to ballet to work with MDT, a company that exposed her to masters such as George Balanchine, Anthony Tudor, Jose Limon, Dwight Rhoden, Elisa Monte, Alonzo King and Loyce Houlton as well as great emerging choreographers including Lise Houlton. She has also worked as a guest artist for L.A. Chamber Ballet and numerous independent choreographers.

    Technical Report 330

    Basser Department of Computer Science

    University of Sydney
NSW 2006 (updated 14 October 2003) ABSTRACT This essay is a study of the history of the growth of creativity in dance over the last 100 years. Before 1900, most choreographers for dance were male. Theatrical dance in the first half of the twentieth century was dominated by female choreographers. The origins for this change are discussed. Meanwhile, social dancing before 1900 involved mainly dances with prescribed steps. Males appear to have been released from this straight-jacket (inadvertently) to do creative social dance choreography by Vernon Castle in 1911. Females were not released until some 50 years later (again, inadvertently) by Chubby Checker. Vernon Castle's method of dividing ballroom dances into "figures" may be viewed as the construction of a set of symbols. The mapping of these onto numerical digits is exemplified using figures from the modern Tango. Castle's catalysis of of the change from sequence dancing to ballroom dancing can then be viewed as a change from rational dancing (like rational numbers that have recurring groups of digits) to irrational dancing (like irrational numbers having digit sequences with no repetition). INTRODUCTION Ordinary people in society can involve themselves in dancing in either of two ways: watching the the performance of specially trained dancers. and/or participating themselves in social dancing. Over the last 200 years in Western society, substantial changes to the creation of dance in these spheres has occurred.
