The choreography of hula

an entire body in motion
By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto
Star-Bulletin WHILE you're keeping your eyes on the hands, Aunty Mae Loebenstein is focusing on the feet. "I'm a feet person," said the kumu hula, whose Ka Pa Hula O Kauanoe O Wa'ahila performs at the 34th annual Merrie Monarch Festival hula competition this weekend. "You dance with your feet. You don't dance with your hands really. It's your feet that take you around, not your hands." Hula choreography is about more than hands. It can embrace feet as well as lyrical body motions reflecting nature, and dynamic change in the pursuit of perfection. "When you put your feet down strong, you control your body for the hula," said the 85-year-old doyenne who's been crafting dances for more than six decades. "But if you're on your toes, you're kinda little wobbly, yeah." She teaches dancers to plant both feet flat and sway into their steps. She emphasizes a natural, controlled hip movement, as if dancers are floating across the stage. The feet don't skid, they don't tap, they don't jerk. The torso is pa'a (not bobbing) and hand movements are very subtle.

email: dt@dancing-times.co.uk The Rough Guide to Choreography By Sophie Roper S Michael Nunn William Trevitt The series breaks down into the four programmes taking viewers step by step through the creative process including the highs and the lows. The final episode includes the performance of the piece at the Barbican Theatre, London, as part of the BITE04 festival back in July this year, plus response from key members of the audience. We begin our journey with Nunn, Trevitt and their company in April 2003. They are working with five different professional choreographers, each creating a short piece for the company. Nunn and Trevitt begin to question at this time whether, having worked closely with a number of choreographers, they themselves have got the experience for and are capable of creating their own work as choreographers rather than dancers. They both feel that this is a natural progression for them and George Piper Dances. Aware that this next step will be a risk, they take confidence from the reputation that their company is not one to tackle the safe option. We move to the USA tour in the autumn of 2003. Nunn and Trevitt are still looking for the initial spark/inspiration for the piece and go to a Capoeira class whilst in New York. They were impressed with the power of the movement as the dancers worked and shifted around their partner, all without making contact. They felt this was an idea that might work for them.

Fields of Study in Dance
The dance department has drawn up a list of possible career opportunities related to the field of dance. Each career choice includes a short description of the field. All fields of study listed have a list of suggested Cottey College dance courses which will give you a start toward the successful entrance into further study of the field. Below are some areas you may wish to investigate further.
Performing
No formal education necessary, but if the college/university route is chosen then a bachelor of fine arts degree is strongly suggested because of its concentration on performance. As the lines between dance idioms become more and more blurred it is recommended that performers have an eclectic background in dance. The study of ballet, modern, and theatrical dance is strongly suggested. Suggested Cottey courses: all technique areas, Choreography, Repertory Dance Company, Beginning Acting, music courses, Dance Appreciation or Dance History I and II.
Teaching
Dance Therapy
People in this group work in hospitals, educational, rehabilitation and other health care institutions, prisons and recreational centres. They also work in private practice. Dance therapists plan and carry out specialized programs to aid in the treatment of mental and physical disabilities. Extensive dance experience and a liberal arts background with coursework in psychology. For specific prerequisites contact the graduate program you plan to attend. Professional training is on the graduate level. Graduates receive a masters degree in dance/movement therapy. Graduates from an "approved" dance/movement therapy program are eligible for the D.T.R. (Dance Therapist Registered). Alternative routes can be investigated by visiting the following Web site. http://www.umanitoba.ca/student/counselling/spotlights/dancether.html

Under the leadership of first George Balanchine and now Peter Martins, SAB boasts a long tradition of fostering and developing the talents of emerging choreographers.
Since the mid-1960s, the School has invited new choreographers to create original works on students for inclusion in SAB's annual Workshop Performances. In the 1980s, Peter Martins introduced annual choreographic workshops at which outside choreographers were invited to create works on students to be performed in a closed-workshop setting. In the late 1990s, Martins altered the format of the annual choreography workshops and limited the choreographer and dancer participants to SAB students only.
In 1997, Peter Martins initiated the School's Student Choreography Project to provide students enrolled in the Intermediate and Advanced Divisions with the opportunity to explore the art of choreography by working with fellow students.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. AT THE NATIONAL BALLET SCHOOL of Canada, a group of 9 to 14-year-olds take turns presenting their choreography to an informal audience of parents, other students, and teachers. The children, however tentative, seem to take joy in participating in the creative process using a movement vocabulary they love. They are part of the school's Professional Ballet/Academic Program that integrates classical ballet training with an academic education for students in grades 6 through 12. But how many of these young dancers will become professional dance makers? Is creating choreography an ability that can be taught? Can the requisite skills be transferred, like following a recipe in cooking? Or learning a formula in algebra? DANCE MAGAZINE posed these questions to school directors, composition teachers, choreographers, and artistic directors. The responses reveal that the real question is not whether we should nurture the ability of a talented individual; but instead, what is the best platform for an emerging choreographer to work, risk, fail, succeed, and come back again a little more confident?
