Basic Guidelines of Choreography for Ballet
Adapted From: Ballet For Dummies When you decide to choreograph your own ballet dances, you have complete freedom of expression. And that's as it should be. But artists of all kinds have found that they flourish best when they voluntarily submit to certain limitations. The series of ballet gestures, for example, is a "limitation" that somehow sets the imaginations of the great ballet choreographers free.
What makes a choreographer want to create a particular dance in the first place? Most choreographers say that they are usually inspired by one of two things: the music or the theme. When you hear a certain piece of music, are you swept away in an ecstatic whirlwind? Do colors and shapes and movements immediately suggest themselves to you? Are you lost in time and space? If so, we know a good doctor who can help. But failing that, the piece sounds like a good candidate for choreography. If there's one basic rule of choreography, it's this: The gestures should somehow reflect the music. What sets the successful choreographers apart is that their gestures embody the music beautifully, as if each musical phrase had been written just for them.

Time And Space
From left to right: Ben Levy, Maggie Shamdasani and Darrin Wright To understand how to build choreography, you must first grasp the three basic elements of dance: space, time and energy. These components are used to break down all movement. Using and manipulating them will immediately add variety to your choreography. Space refers to the area a dancer performs in. Space can be divided into levels like a tiered birthday cake. Used most often, medium-level movement is performed by a standing dancer. Low choreography brings the dancer to floor level and high moves like leaps and lifts are performed in the air. Another aspect of space is how dancers move through the performing area.
Energy, the most elusive of these basic dance elements, relates to the quality of movement. This concept is easily recognizable in contrasting dance forms such as ballet and tap, but applies to the different kinds of a discipline as well. Funky jazz dance, for instance, requires percussive and explosive energy, whereas 5, 6, 7, 8 lyrical jazz is based on soft and expansive qualities.

Have you ever wished for an event that would give people a chance to hear and see your tap works in a sharing, caring, nurturing atmosphere, in an open format and on a great floor? Wouldn't you love to offer your dancers not only the excitement and prestige of performing your works at a National Showcase but also the opportunity to learn tons of terrific "tap stuff." Frequently Asked Questions This page provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions about the National Tap Ensemble's American Tap Dance Choreography Showcase.
  • "I have this tap piece which I did for my students a few years ago that has them starting up without tap shoes on. Also, several of my kids sing and do a little bit of body music (hambone) in it. Does that disqualify us for this Tap Choreography Showcase?"
Not at all. In fact, quite the opposite! We encourage tap choreographers to break away from the usual clichés (it's how artistic traditions truly evolve) so your piece sounds OK. However, because this showcase is all about composography (tap dance choreography) we require that performers wear and use (i.e. make music with) tap shoes for at least 75% of the time spent on stage. Also, just for the record the children need to really use their voices (lip-syncing is not allowed.)
"When will I know if my pieces have been selected, how I have placed, and what do I need to do next?"
