ICD, alongside with some of the most important and innovative dancehouses in Europe such as Centre National de la Danse (Paris), Dansens Hus (Oslo), Dansens Hus (Stockholm), The Place (London), Tanzquartier (Vienna), Tanzhaus nrw (Düsseldorf), as well as other associated partners, have joined together in the European Dancehouses Network (EDN) with the view to enhancing and developing mobility and exchange of artists and dance practices in a range of different cultural contexts throughout Europe.
During this three-year project, more than 150 artists will benefit from being co-produced, presented and/or invited in residence by prestigious dancehouses in Europe.
The dialogue between artists, art managers and audiences of various European countries will be strengthened as IDEE develops concrete works and projects, and questions the different aspects of cultural exchanges in Europe.

ERE you not dazzled by Prabhu Deva’s choreography for Hrithik Roshan in Lakshya ? And by Malaika and Shah Rukh Khan dancing on top of a train in Dil Se . How many of us enjoy dance so much we wish we could make a career of it? Well, take heart, because you can. Hasn’t Farah Khan done just that? Dance today has been elevated from just a recreational activity or a performing art to a much sought-after profession, called choreography. In fact, choreography is more than just dancing. It is the art of creating stylised movements in space to express human feelings and emotions, in various dimensions. Choreography and choreographers have today spread to almost every field of entertainment. The four major areas among these are: film and music video choreography; fashion choreography; event choreography; and conventional dance choreography. Film and music video choreography involves directing complete song and dance sequences for feature films or for music companies. Film and video choreographers get to make artists, actors and actresses dance to their tunes.

Dance and Choreography Career and Job Highlights
  • As they reach their late thirties, several dancers refrain from performing; however, some continue to work in the field as choreographers, dance teachers, or artistic directors.
  • The majority of dancers begin formal training very young—between 5 and 15 years old—and several begin auditioning professionally by age 17 or 18.
  • Since dancers and choreographers face extreme competition, only those who possess optimum talent find regular work.
Dance and choreography Career Overview
For years and years, dancers have used their bodies to express ideas, stories, and rhythm. Many different kind of dance allow them to move freely and express themselves, such as classical ballet, modern dance, and dance styles specific to cultures. Several dancers merge performance work with instructing or choreography.
Dancers perform in musical productions, opera, musical theater, television, movies, music videos, commercials and other various settings where sinning and acting may also to required. They may present styles which include: folk, ethnic, tap, jazz and other well-known dance styles. A few artists perform by themselves; however, most dancers perform as part of a group.
Several dancers pair up with choreographers, who put together brand new dances and create new versions of existing dances. Choreographers train performers at rehearsals to accomplish the preferred effect because very few routines are actually documented. A lot of times, choreographers are also involved dancing auditions.

Creating new choreography and choreographers is a numbers game. You want to encourage lots of people to do lots of work and those that show promise you feed regularly. Very regularly. The trouble is that new choreography is expensive, inherently risky and doesn't always sell. And aside from those small matters you then get a posse of professionals come along and tell you, and the nation, it's not very good, often in unflattering, unthoughtful ways. Which is hardly encouraging for anybody, management, dancers or choreographers of course. And so we see not much new work and precious little particularly from younger choreographers yet to fully make their mark. What we need is for companies to push much more the growing of choreographic talent and for the professionals and audience to judge by appropriate standards - ticket prices are much lower after all. We're in early seeing dancers kick around new ideas, some of which will be rough and some pieces may even be dire in their entirety. But it's not the end of the world for anybody and it's part and parcel of us all helping to grow a better dance future. This will make bugger-all difference to those with the hard words ever at the ready (and I defend anybody's right to tell it the way they see it) but I think it chimes with many. Don't however expect me to be your Auntie Eunice and say everything is simply marvellous - it's not necessarily, but the idea is what matters.

In 1936 in a series of statements entitled “Affirmations” Martha Graham wrote; “No artist is ahead of his time. He is his time. It is just that others are behind the time.” The search for choreographers of greatness who will lead dance bravely into the 21st century, the endless debates about who is the future of ballet, modern, world, American etc etc ultimately dissolve into a homogenous cacophony of babble. Not because the question is not relevant, but rather because no answer is forthcoming, or rather certain facts are so often overlooked. In the world history of art the most intense periods of creativity, those times which throw up artists of importance and bravery, centre around major and huge upheavals within society - art seems to follow a Malthusian curve, and the history of dance is no different. And what of dance now, what of the choreographers now, what is the voice, the mood, the feeling of now? Unfortunately, I would argue it is apathy, or rather a desire to please, an unwillingness to get one’s hands bloody, to provoke and upset - I dream of going to a dance recital and being provoked and upset, there I might see the future of dance in the now.

The Choreographers’ Ink. concert will feature original pieces choreographed and performed by members of the class, as well as the premiere of a new dance by Mallardi involving masks created by artist Marlene Lundvall. Lundvall, a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, teaches visual arts at Curry College, Milton, MA. A former dancer, Lundvall danced with Mallardi in New York City and with the Dance Circle of Boston and she has collaborated with Mallardi on many projects. "Claire is my spiritual sister–and a perfectionist," says Lundvall. Her masks for Mallardi’s new work are based on bird and animal images. "They are abstract, whimsical, scary–filled with fantasy. With her background in Claire knows how to make them come alive." Lundvall, who sometimes exhibits her masks as sculpture, was recently chosen by Malcolm Rogers, director of the Museum of Fine Arts, as one of 100 artists from 1,500 applicants to have her work represented in an exhibition at University Place, 124 Mt. Auburn Street. Sha Sha Ang ’97, who has worked with Mallardi for five years, says, "I keep coming back. I get more and more every year from my dance group. And from Claire I get not only the best instruction in composition and technique, but also a role model for dance, for art, and for life. She has great generosity of spirit." Ang, the producer of the Choreographers’ Ink. concert, will perform "Duet," a solo which she choreographed, as well as perform in Mallardi’s mask piece and in a duet of her original choreography.
