    1. Recent updates
Most of the recent updates have concentrating on stabilizing ATAPI and other bug fixing. I am also pleased to add Silicon Image 311x to the list of open chipsets (hardware for which programming information is readily available to open source developers).
    2. Hardware support
    Intel ICH "IDE" mode
Summary: No TCQ/NCQ. Looks like a PATA controller, but with a few added, non-standard SATA port controls. Hardware does not support hotplug. "Coldplug" support is potentially feasible. libata driver status: Production, but see issue #2, #3. Recently work on issue #2 has improved the state of that issue. drivers/ide driver status: Production, but see issue #1, #2. Issue #1: Depending on BIOS settings, IDE driver ( not libata) may lock up computer when probing drives.

hardware Last modified: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 Refers to objects that you can actually touch, like disks disk drives display screens keyboards ... boards , and chips . In contrast, software is untouchable. Software exists as ideas, concepts, and symbols, but it has no substance. Books provide a useful analogy. The pages and the ink are the hardware, while the words, sentences, paragraphs, and the overall meaning are the software. A computer without software is like a book full of blank pages you need software to make the computer useful just as you need words to make a book meaningful. • Hardware RNGs
Hardware Random Number Generators on Intel Chipsets
If you're running Linux or one of the BSDs on an Intel platform, you may have been told that you have a hardware random number generator (RNG) in your chipset. Recent kernels of Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD all include drivers for these devices. Unfortunately, it's likely that few people ever got RNGs in their chipsets. Intel has now confirmed that its current-generation 865 and 875 chipsets do not include a hardware RNG, and that newer chipsets will also not include this device. Starting with the 810 in 1999, some Intel chipsets did include RNGs; but the firmware hub that included the RNG soon became an optional component of the chipset, and was probably only present thereafter in mainboards manufactured by Intel. The newer your mainboard with an Intel chipset, the less likely it is that you have an RNG onboard. Also unfortunately, the Linux and *BSD drivers and daemons will not necessarily, as of this writing, tell you that you don't have an RNG. You may have to infer it from the failure of the RNG to produce random data. If you search the web for "Intel hardware random", you could be forgiven for concluding that Intel's RNG program is alive and well. There are many articles about the Intel RNGs. But look again: all of those articles are two to four years old. Intel's RNG program is defunct.

HOME PRODUCTS SOLUTIONS NEWS ... ABOUT US Plan 9 - PC Hardware Requirements
Supported PC Hardware This page lists hardware known to work with Plan 9. Most hardware is listed by chipset: you may need to know what chipset your particular cards use. FLOPPY DISKS Plan 9 supports generic floppy drives, although some people have had trouble accessing them. If you have trouble accessing your 3.5" floppy drive and also have a 5.25" floppy drive, try disabling the latter in the BIOS. USB floppy drives are not supported. IDE/ATAPI DISKS Plan 9 supports almost all motherboard IDE/ATAPI controllers, but DMA transfers are only used on these recognized chipsets (chipsets not listed here will simply run slower; you can try turning on DMA by editing /sys/src/9/pc/sdata.c).

06/22/04 2:42 PM PT Aberdeen Group chief research officer Peter Kastner told TechNewsWorld that the new 915 G/P and 925 X chipsets represent the biggest change in input-output capability in a decade. Referring to improvements in integrated graphics, memory, audio and new PCI Express support, Kastner said the primary benefit of the new chipsets will be support for media-center-type computers.
