The Chinese Language:
Myths and Facts
Article written by Timothy Light for the Asia Society's Focus on Asian Studies, Vol. 1, No. 3, Asian Languages, Related materials: Few things in Chinese culture are more widely misunderstood outside of China than the Chinese language. The Chinese write very differently from us and indeed from all other literate societies in today's world except for Japan and Korea (which continue to make partial use of writing borrowed from China long ago). Even to the untutored eye, Chinese characters are not an alphabet, though many Americans who want to ask about them do not know what term to use for them, and questions are often asked such as, "Is it true that the Chinese alphabet . . . well, writing . . . I mean pictures, well . . . you know what I mean . . . they're very pictorial, aren't they?" Because of the obvious radical difference between the way that the Chinese write and the way that we write, many myths have grown up, not just around China's writing system, but around its language as a whole and around China's people. Indeed, people often say that the Chinese write in pictures. Many believe that Chinese is a monosyllabic language, which presumably means that every word in Chinese consists of a single syllable, like the English words but, aim, quick, work, crime, laugh

News: This version of the flashcards program includes a vocabulary editor and the ability to export vocabulary to the Palm. News: A version of the flashcards program for the Palm Pilot is available. Click here for more information. News: A beta version of a flashcards program is now available that can take advantage of the improved display on Palm Tungsten modes. It also contains a vocabulary reader. Click here for more information. When I first started studying Chinese, I started with a set of flashcards that I bought in a local bookstore. These worked well at the start, but as time went on there were words in our book for which there wasn't a card. In addition we were starting to get multi-character words that have specific meanings that aren't always obvious when you look at the meanings of the individual characters. There are a couple of existing flashcard programs out there. Some of them are web based which can be really slow. Another major drawback is that they don't divide up the vocabulary the same way as was done in the book we used, which often leaves you wondering whether you should even know the character that pops up on the screen.

Return to Home Page A B C ... Z A Dictionary of Pinyin Language Language change This is a proposal for development of the han yu pin yin . In the hanzi system, homophonous words are represented by different hanzi. This phenomenon is taken into consideration in this design. Language changes. The standard Chinese is different in various periods of history. The Chinese language in the future will be different from what is currently spoken. Language change is also taken into consideration in this design. This dictionary is intended to prove that an alphabetic script facilitates language change towards more phonological distinction. In this dictionary, a blue print represents a sound that is possible but not current in the standard Chinese. I admit that the 'possible' is my personal opinion. Other people definitely have their own opinions. I have no intention of defining what the future language will sound like, but only propose the possibility of more phonological diversification. A language is created and developed by all members of the speech community. Three methods Three methods, synonymy, heterography and homography, are adopted in this design. Synonymy is to propose a new sound for a word. The proposed and current sounds will coexist. The current sound of the word is shared by at least another word. But the proposed sound and its spelling are unique for the meaning. The proposed sound is to eventually replace the current sound for the word. The language will consequently become more distinct, thus less homophonous.
