The New Year is a great time to motivate students to set new goals, expand their interests and develop an appreciation for others. As such, the Chinese New Year (Jan. 22) provides an excellent opportunity to create lessons that tie together standards in geography, art, reading, writing and social studies. Here's a sample lesson plan.
    • Have students use these sites to research New Year's celebrations around the world. Next, give them baseball-card-sized blank construction or heavier paper. On one side, they trace or draw the country; on the other, they list interesting things about that land's celebration. They place these cards on a blank map of the world complete with time zones. Finally, they compare and contrast the celebrations with their country of origin, the country where they currently live, and China. Teachers can add age-appropriate craft projects.

    http://www.newton.mec.edu/Angier/DimSum/Full Grant Proposal.html
China: Dim Sum: A Connection to Chinese-American Culture Project Overview The annual observance of Chinese New Year by the Asian community provides a special time to share their culture, customs, and history in Newton's elementary schools. Over the past several years, during the annual quest for quality educational materials, it became apparent to project members that such materials were not widely known or readily available for classroom presentation. The primary goal of this project is to assemble and promote a versatile resource kit for Kindergarten through Fifth Grade classrooms which will enhance awareness and understanding of Chinese-American culture. Topics will include Chinese traditions and culture, art, language, literature, geography, history, games, inventions, immigration, and Chinese Americans today. Research efforts will focus on the collection of materials from diverse, global sources, such as libraries and institutions, Chinese cultural and historical societies, educators and the Internet. The kit will feature a practical teacher handbook of concise lesson plans and activities, from which units can be selected a la carte. Companion teaching tools will include books, maps, reproducible art, props, and multi-media resources. Using technology, we will develop a Newton based web site for the purpose of distributing Dim Sum project information and for sharing of ideas, activities and lessons with teachers across the city.

    Background
For centuries, Europe traded with China along the Silk Road, an ancient route that allowed exchanges of horses, spices, silk and eventually paper between China and Europe. When Marco Polo returned to his home in Venice, Italy in 1295, having spent 24 years exploring China, he brought with him knowledge of woodblock printing. Italians began to produce books using the hand-carved block technique of cutting away the background of the wooden block, leaving raised letters. The raised letters were then inked and paper placed overtop. When removed, the result was a printed page of words and images. Sometimes a page of a book would require a number of carved woodblocks joined together. The process was time consuming and not permanent. Since wood weathers and cracks if it's dry and warps if it is wet, giving the blocks used to print pages had a limited lifespan.
Illustration of Gutenberg's press In 1436, a German man named Johann Gutenberg altered an olive press to create a printing press machine. Instead of using the heavy screw to press the olives for oil, he used it to force a printing block onto a sheet of paper below it. Gutenberg developed metal type for each of the 26 characters in the Roman alphabet (easier to manage than the Chinese 5000), and designed a way to move the characters around on a printing plate. This system became known as the movable type printing press and made it possible to print multiple copies. With its invention, it was possible to print more copies in a few weeks than could have been produced in years using the hand-carved block method. The printed word spread like very quickly throughout Europe.
