Dutiful Daughters: Seven Moral Exemplars in Chinese History
Barbara Bennett Peterson
Throughout much of Chinese history, mortal-moral women have been held in highest esteem. There were empresses, diplomats, teachers, artists, philosophers, poets, dancers, mother models, wife models, political aides, warriors, writers, scientists, and craftswomen, among many others. The one central characteristic of their appeal was that they served as moral exemplars
It is thus no irony to find among these "dutiful daughters" (xiaonu) women going to war. Among them was the poet Xu Mu (ca. 7 th century BCE), who defended her native kingdom Wei against the Di people. When the Di conquered Wei in 660 BCE, Xu Mu left her husband's kingdom of Xu, rallied her brothers, and marshaled support from neighboring kingdoms to successfully defend her ancestral home. While the people of Wei long admired her sense of duty, her famous poem "Speeding Away" hints at the tension between competing duties to husband and to father and brothers: The wheels turn fast, the horse trots on

The Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution The Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of Chinese Revolution share a single building complex, which runs more than 300 meters north and south along the eastern side of Tian' anmen Square. The four-story main building with its two symmetrical wings was built in 1959 as part of the project to build 10 monumental buildings in Beijing.
Rising 40 meters at its highest point, the creamy yellow structure is decorated with a band of alternating green and yellow glazed tiles surrounding its eaves. On each side of the entrance stands a pylon in the form of a burning torch, symbolizing Mao Zedong' s famous prophecy "A single spark cans tart a prairie fire."
Climbing up the granite steps the visitor will find himself inside a vestibule, which to the east into the Central Hall, to the north the Museum of Chinese History, and to the south the Museum of the Chinese Revolution.
The Central Hall is dedicated to the memory of Marx, Engels, Lenin and Stalin, and sculptured representations of their heads appear on the wall, lit by a skylight framed with ornamental white flowers.
The two museums are arranged symmetrically, each with an introductory hall and 17 exhibition halls. The exhibits housed in the museums are arranged over the course of hallways two kilometers long. The solemnity of the Central Hall contrasts with the airy simplicity of the exhibition halls.

Introduction
Wei Qi (also spelt Wei-Ch'i) as it's known in China, Baduk (Paduk or Pa-dok) as it's known in Korea or Go, as it is known in Japan and generally in the West, is considered by most Oriental game experts to be the worlds greatest strategic skill game, far surpassing Chess in it's complexity and scope. Most people who have played it would agree with this conclusion and, unlike chess, no computer program has yet been written which has been able to compete with the best Go players. Wei-Ch'i means "surrounding game" or "surrounding chess" and the object is simply to capture territory by placing down counters on the board. Wei Qi is the most perfect of board games from several perspectives. Of all the serious board games described on this site, Go has the fewest rules and yet, the game itself is is the most intellectually challenging. The mathematical elegance of the rules is complemented by the great beauty of the boards and stones - of all board games in the world, Go has been raised by the Japanese to a pinnacle of aesthetic beauty. The Japanese have whole schools where people devote their entire life to the game and a grading system akin to the martial arts systems.
History
According to Chinese history, Wei-Ch'i was invented by Emperor Shun (2255 - 2206 BC) to help develop the intelligence of his son, Shokin. A alternative version attributes the invention to U, who lived during the reign of Emperor Kieh Kwei several hundred years later. Under non-Chinese history, it is thought more likely that the game originated in central Asia from where it spread eastwards through Nepal and Tibet to China. The earliest written reference is found in the works of Mencius around 400BC. The first books were written about Wei Ch'i during the T'ang dynasty between 618 - 906 AD and there are enough poems and other literature written during the 10th Century AD to deduce that the game must have been well established by then.

Chinese New Year The Chinese New Year has a great history. In other traditions, by this time in the year, most resolutions - made on December 31 - have been subtly forgotten and placed in a cupboard marked "maybe next year." However, all hope is not lost, as there's a second chance to start afresh with the celebration of Chinese New Year on February 12th.
The Chinese New Year is very similar to the Western one, swathed in traditions and rituals.
The origin of the Chinese New Year is itself centuries old - in fact, too old to actually be traced. It is popularly recognised as the Spring Festival and celebrations last 15 days.
Preparations tend to begin a month from the date of the Chinese New Year (similar to a Western Christmas), when people start buying presents, decoration materials, food and clothing. A huge clean-up gets underway days before the New Year, when Chinese houses are cleaned from top to bottom, to sweep away any traces of bad luck, and doors and windowpanes are given a new coat of paint, usually red. The doors and windows are then decorated with paper cuts and couplets with themes such as happiness, wealth and longevity printed on them.

    Institute of History and Philology
    RESEARCH
The Institute is committed to achieving its goal of undertaking research on East Asia in a scientific manner, by developing new source materials and using new research methodologies. It is divided into a total of five sections covering five specific fields: History, Linguistics, Archaeology, Anthropology, and Chinese Writing Sys-tems. Moreover, in July 1995 the Institute established nine special research groups to encourage cooperative research within its walls: State and Society, History of Thought and Culture, Images and Artefacts, Linguistic Research, Documents and Language Materials, South-East Asian Archaeology, Ecology and Archaeology, History of Daily Life and Ritual Practice, and Chinese Writing Systems. Organization and conservation of Ming and Ch'ing dynasty documents.
    SECTION 1 (HISTORY)
This section places emphasis on both the collection of materials and the pursuit of research. Previously, individual researchers concentrated on the study and emendation of canonical works, on general history, history of religion, social and economic history, ancient peoples and ancient geography, ancient art, calendrical methods, history of science, writing systems, and commentaries. In recent years, interest has moved toward topics such as political systems, thought and culture, economy and society, learning, and law, in all periods of Chinese history, from pre-Ch'in through the Ming and Ch'ing dynasties.
    SECTION 2 (LINGUISTICS)
Apart from continuing the description and historical study of the different ethno-linguistic groups and dialects within China's borders, the Linguistics Section has in recent years taken up topics like typology, language (dialect) confrontation, and theoretical investigation of migration. Moreover, because of the highly interdisciplinary nature of modern linguistics, this section dedicates major efforts to the exploration of new fields that combine with life sciences and computer science, such as neuro-linguistics, experimental linguistics, and statistical linguistics, as well as grammatical research, the backbone of linguistic theory.

Kung Fu is an ancient Chinese martial art honored throughout the world. Kung Fu's history and traditions are distinctly Chinese and are an accurate reflection of the ancient culture. Many of the Kung-Fu martial arts fighting systems that are documented have been passed down from master to student for thousands of years. The ancient and traditional martial art form of Chinese Kung Fu has been growing for over 2,000 years.
The Chinese Kung Fu Club of DeKalb was founded by Sifu Arthur Berry in 1979. Sifu Berry carefully selects his students to ensure that only those who are serious in studying traditional Kung-Fu are invited to join the class. His classes are small and very personalized, guaranteeing the true feeling of having a Sifu. To Sifu Berry, a Sifu is not only a teacher, but a father and mentor as well.
Sifu Berry strongly emphasizes a family atmosphere in his Chinese kung fu club. Everyone who learns and teaches is a brother or sister to each and every one who enters the club. Those who move on and away still keep in contact with the Chinese Kung-Fu Club of DeKalb family and find that they are forever welcomed both by the new and old members. As a family, the students help each other achieve their potential and be the best they can be. More experienced students use what they already know to help out the newer students. Through this, there is a great balance that helps the class improve as a whole. It is very important to Sifu Berry that all students, not just a few select individuals, achieve a high level of Kung-Fu.
