    45. Chinese Dynasties
The rebellion was the most deadly in chinese history. During the last decades of the 19th century foreign governments gained control over parts of China.
    http://www.crystalinks.com/chinadynasties.html
    Chinese Dynasties
The Chinese were ruled by various dynasties. A dynasty is a time period that is ruled by a specific family. When a new dynasty was to come into power it would overthrow the existing dynasty. Chinese civilization, as described in mythology, begins with Pangu - sometimes spelled Bangu - the creator of the universe, and a succession of legendary sage-emperors and culture heroes (among them are Huang Di , Yao, and Shun) who taught the ancient Chinese to communicate and to find sustenance, clothing, and shelter. XIA DYNASTY: 2000 - 1500 BC The first prehistoric dynasty is said to be Xia, from about the twenty-first to the sixteenth century B.C. Until scientific excavations were made at early bronze-age sites at Anyang , Henan Province, in 1928, it was difficult to separate myth from reality in regard to the Xia. But since then, and especially in the 1960s and 1970s, archaeologists have uncovered urban sites, bronze implements, and tombs that point to the existence of Xia civilization in the same locations cited in ancient Chinese historical texts. At minimum, the Xia period marked an evolutionary stage between the late neolithic cultures and the typical Chinese urban civilization of the Shang dynasty. SHANG DYNASTY: 1700 - 1027 BC Thousands of archaeological finds in the Huang He, Henan Valley - the apparent cradle of Chinese civilizationprovide evidence about the Shang dynasty, which endured roughly from 1700 to 1027 B.C. The Shang dynasty (also called the Yin dynasty in its later stages) is believed to have been founded by a rebel leader who overthrew the last Xia ruler. Its civilization was based on agriculture, augmented by hunting and animal husbandry. Two important events of the period were the development of a writing system, as revealed in archaic Chinese inscriptions found on tortoise shells and flat cattle bones (commonly called oracle bones), and the use of bronze metallurgy. A number of ceremonial bronze vessels with inscriptions date from the Shang period; the workmanship on the bronzes attests to a high level of civilization.

    History of China
China, representing one of the earliest civilizations in the world, has a recorded history of about 3,600 years. It possesses rich historical documents as well as ancient relics. Like other nations, China, in its development, passed through the stages of primitive society, slave society, and feudal society. During the middle decades of the 19th century, capitalist forces of foreign countries invaded China, and China was slowly transformed into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The founding of the People's Republic in 1949 marked China's entry into the socialist stage. During the long period of historical development, the industrious, courageous, and intelligent Chinese people of all nationalities collectively created a great civilization. They made great contributions to all of mankind. The following is a list of the dynasties:

Educational Materials Selected Artifacts The Exhibition Imperial China was the first exhibition ever to explore the role of the horse in more than 3,000 years of Chinese history and culture. Far more than just an equestrian history, more than 350 artifacts not only illuminated the horse's significance in art, warfare, leisure activities and sport, but also showed how this interaction affected the overall culture Beginning with the Western Zhou Dynasty (1027-771 BC), and covering all subsequent dynasties through the Qing (1644-1911), the world exclusive exhibition contained many artifacts never before seen outside of China. All of the art and artifacts was selected from the collections of museums throughout Shaanxi Province , capital of China for more than a millennium, and home of the terra cotta army of China's first emperor. Exhibition Highlights:
    • Two Chariots from the Western Zhou and Western Han dynasties (206 BC-9 AD) that were restored specifically for Imperial China The bronze Han chariot is elaborately inlaid with original gold fittings.

      Historical Setting
    • The History Of China , as documented in ancient writings, dates back some 3,300 years. Modern archaeological studies provide evidence of still more ancient origins in a culture that flourished between 2500 and 2000 B.C. in what is now central China and the lower Huang He (Yellow River) Valley of north China. Centuries of migration, amalgamation, and development brought about a distinctive system of writing, philosophy, art, and political organization that came to be recognizable as Chinese civilization. What makes the civilization unique in world history is its continuity through over 4,000 years to the present century. The Chinese have developed a strong sense of their real and mythological origins and have kept voluminous records since very early times. It is largely as a result of these records that knowledge concerning the ancient past, not only of China but also of its neighbors, has survived.

Shang There are three things to know about the Shang: one, they were the most advanced bronze-working civilization in the world; two, Shang remains provide the earliest and most complete record of Chinese writing (there are a few Neolithic pots that have a few characters scratched on them; however, a few characters do not a complete writing system make), scratched out on the shoulder blades of pigs for oracular purposes. 1046-256 B.C. Zhou Most scholars think that the Zhou were much more "Chinese" than the Shang. For one, they used a father-to-son succession system. Also, they weren't too keen on human sacrifice. However, they weren't as good at working bronze as the Shang. Still, it would be centuries before the West was able to cast bronze as well as the Zhou. Some, though not all, scholars believe that the Xia, the Shang, and the Zhou actually were three different cultures that emerged more or less at the same time in different areas of the Yellow River valley. And the historical record supports this view the Shang were conquered from outside by the Zhou, as the Xia had been conquered from the outside by the Shang.

China is located in Asia bordering Russia in the north and Vietnam, Laos and Burma in the south. Three main rivers are Huang He (the Yellow River), Chang Jiang (the Yangtze River), and Mekong (the Pearl River). The early civilization of China began at the banks of Huang He. Beijing is the capital and the largest cities include Shanghai and Guangzhou. According to July 2001 estimation by CIA, the population of China reaches 1.27 billion.
    History
Chinese history began about five thousands years ago. It was not until ancient Chinese pictorial writing developed in Shan Dynasty 1500 BC that Chinese history began to be recorded. China went through a total of 115 Dynasties and was ruled by the Emperors. The revolution in 1911 led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen overthrew the Ching Dynasty ending over 2000 years of feudal monachy and established the Republic of China. During the period of 1921-1949, China underwent the War of Resistance against Japan and the civil war between the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party. On 1st October 1949, Mao Zedong, became the chairman of the Central People's Government and founded the People's Republic of China under the Communist Party. The Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan.
