House Investigators Say They've Found New Trie Link To Chinese Government
Trie WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 28) House investigators say they have uncovered evidence that raises "troubling questions" about a possible Chinese government role in the allegedly illegal political donations given by President Clinton's longtime friend Charlie Trie. While investigators for Chairman Dan Burton's House Government Reform and Oversight Committee conceded they could not prove Trie's donations were directed by the Chinese government, they did brief CNN and other news organizations about ties they said they have uncovered between Trie's secretary and two men linked to Beijing's government. Trie is the former Little Rock restaurant owner who became an international businessman after his former patron, Bill Clinton, became President. Trie is scheduled to go on trial later this year on federal charges of illegally funneling donations from his overseas business partner, Macau businessman Ng Lap Seng (also known as "Mr. Wu") to the Democratic National Committee during the 1996 presidential election. He has pleaded not guilty. Burton Burton's investigators said they discovered that Trie's secretary, Keshi Zhan, held a joint Washington bank account with an executive of a company known as China Everbright, which they said was 100 percent owned by the State Council of the government of China.

Chinese athlete: 'I owe it to the party'
    By Li YongYan
BEIJING - "I owe my Olympic gold medal to my parents, my coach and, above all, to the wise leadership of the Republican Party and President Bush." Can anybody imagine such a remark from an American athlete speaking to Fox News Network? Of course not. Not even the irreverent, wise-cracking talk show host Jay Leno has such a fertile imagination.
But when it comes to Chinese athletes, this extravagant tribute to the political leadership of a country is anything but fictional in the 28th Olympic Games now under way in Athens. The minute a young Chinese girl bagged the gold medal in the women's table-tennis singles final on Sunday, a Beijing TV network reporter stuck a microphone under the nose of her parents. The father, without batting an eye, told the audience that his good daughter was a good Communist Party member and her success was a tribute to the party organization. We can only imagine the hyperbolic tributes, straining credulity, when Beijing hosts the 2008 Summer Olympics.

    China sends condolences to U.S.
The U.S. flag at half mast in Beijing By Willy Wo-Lap Lam
Senior China Analyst HONG KONG, China (CNN) Beijing's international affairs experts say American "unilateralism" might have contributed to tension with terrorist groups that were suspected of masterminding the attacks against the U.S. Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Tuesday sent a message of condolence to counterpart George W. Bush. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said that it was the Chinese government's long-standing policy to "condemn and oppose all types of terrorist acts of violence." Diplomatic sources in Beijing said soon after the terrorist acts were reported in the Chinese capital, Communist party Politburo leaders met to discuss the emergency. The sources said the leadership decided on three principles: Beijing would condemn the terrorist acts; it would express sympathy with the victims in the U.S.; but it would not get involved in America’s disputes with terrorist groupings or anti-U.S. elements in the Middle East. Tsinghua University foreign affairs expert Yan Xuetong pointed out no form of terrorist action could be condoned.

FAMILY PLANNING China's family planning policy combines government guidance with the wishes of the masses. The basic requirements of family planning are late marriages and late child-bearing, so as to have fewer, but healthier, babies, especially one child per couple. But a flexible family planning policy is adopted for rural people and ethnic minorities; in rural areas, couples may have second baby in exceptional cases, but must wait several years after the birth of the first child. In areas inhabited by minority peoples, each ethnic group may work out different regulations in accordance with its wish, population, natural resources, economy, culture and customs: In general, a couple may have a second baby or a third child in some places. As for ethnic minorities with extremely small populations, a couple may have as many children as they want.
