BEIJING - China tightened security around Tiananmen Square on Saturday to prevent memorials on the anniversary of the bloody 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. But in Hong Kong, tens of thousands of protesters staged a candlelight rally. In Sydney, Australia, a Chinese diplomat who is seeking asylum emerged from hiding to address a memorial rally. Tiananmen Square, the symbolic political heart of China, was open to the public. But extra carloads of police watched tourists on the vast plaza, where weeks of student-led demonstrations that drew tens of thousands ended in a military attack 16 years ago Saturday. Troops killed hundreds and perhaps thousands of protesters that day. There was no public mention of the anniversary in China nor any sign of attempts to commemorate it.

Chinese Government Must Free Pro-Democracy Advocates
(December 2, 1998) Human Rights Watch today called for the immediate release of Chinese pro-democracy advocates detained Monday and urged a strong and immediate response by the international community. At least five dissidents involved in trying to organize the Chinese Democracy Party were taken into custody. Two were released, but veteran dissidents Xu Wenli Qin Yongmin , and Wang Youcai remain in detention and face possible subversion charges. Noting that the detentions were part of an ongoing crackdown on peaceful dissent that began during in June, the organization urged U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who met with Chinese President Jiang Zemin in Malaysia last month, to personally intervene on behalf of the detainees. Chinese Government declares war on "False News"
by Dror Poleg (last update: June 10, 05 08:29 PM)
The Chinese Government is working on a new mechanism that will “guarantee the authenticity” of information published by local content providers: Newspapers, magazines, TV, Radio, and news websites will come under scrutiny as China’s top media regulatory bodies launch a new campaign to prevent “false news”. Xinhua reports that officials with the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the State Administration of Press and Publication today “pledged to take stringent measures to prevent all possible false news”. Xinhua, the Chinese Government’s official press agency, recalls an incident earlier this year when Beijing Morning Post published an erroneous report that led to a sharp drop in stock prices at the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The new campaign, and the somewhat Orwellian euphemism “false news”, seems in line with the Chinese Government’s growing efforts to tighten its grip over local media.
Earlier this week, the Chinese Ministry of Information Industry pledged to shut down any China-based web sites that will fail to go through an official registration process by June 30.

China Has Not Shared Crucial Data On Bird Flu Outbreaks, Officials Say
By Alan Sipress Washington Post Foreign Service Tuesday, July 19, 2005; Page A15 MANILA The Chinese government has not provided information requested urgently by international health experts about recent avian flu outbreaks in birds, which now threaten to spread the highly lethal virus to previously unaffected countries, according to U.N. officials and independent researchers. World Health Organization officials and other international health organizations have asked the Chinese government for details about three outbreaks in the remote western provinces of Qinghai and Xinjiang. In seeking to head off a potential human pandemic, international health experts said they require samples of the bird flu virus, analyses of its genetic makeup and specifics about the extent of the infection and efforts to contain it. "It is a matter of urgency," said Julie Hall, coordinator of communicable diseases in WHO's China office. "It is an outbreak of potential international importance. We're looking for China to share the information as quickly as possible and as much as possible."

Han Guangsheng speaks at the seminar. (The Epoch Times) TORONTO - Among the many politicians and scholars speaking at the University of Toronto’s Nine Commentaries Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party Han Guangsheng, who has openly resigned from the Chinese Communist Party, was the former head of the Shenyang City Judicial Bureau and deputy head of the Shenyang City Police Department in Liaoning Province. In his first public appearance, Han said, “The CCP’s corruption has had a negative impact on Chinese society, turning the whole of China into an apple rotting from the inside out, little by little.” He added, “Thorough reform is the Chinese Communist regime’s only way out.” The following are excerpts from Han Guangsheng’s speech at the seminar: Thorough Reform is the Chinese Communist Regime’s Only Way Out The Epoch Times published an editorial series titled the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party , revealing the CCP’s intrinsic nature, and triggering a wave of worldwide resignations from the CCP and its affiliated organizations. Because the CCP is on the verge of collapse, it tried to block the public’s access to outside information and wage a campaign to ‘maintaining the advancement’ of the CCP, but to no avail. As the CCP is an outcast, fighting humanity and natural law, it is doomed to collapse.

A Legal Worker in the Chinese Government Exposes the CCP
Special to The Epoch Times Jul 07, 2005
I am a legal officer working for the Chinese government. I have read the stories published in The Epoch Times about the Chinese diplomats who have defected from China: Chen Yonglin, the former Chinese diplomat in Australia, Hao Fengjun, who worked in the “610 Office” in the Tianjin City Public Security Bureau, and the Toronto based Han Guangsheng, the former chief of Shenyang City’s Justice Bureau and Third Level Police Supervisor.. They have openly denounced the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), exposing its evil nature and persecution of dissidents at home and abroad. I feel encouraged by what they’ve done and think that they made the right choice. I want to support them by sharing what I know and let them know they are not alone. On October 1, 1999, the government began enforcing the Chinese Administrative Review Law. After a period of coordination and preparation, we who had been working in the administrative tribunals began to take cases of people appealing their sentences in forced-labor reeducation camps.

Zhao Dagong: The Chinese government will apply Article 106 of the Criminal Law of the PRC to Mr. Zheng Yichun
(July 16, 2005)According to a recent un-identified source, the case of the Chinese dissident Zheng Yichun of Liaoning province, China has a new development. It said that the Chinese government will give-up the previous charge of "subversion the State power or overthrowing the socialist system" of Article 105 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China and replace it with a more severe penalty: Article 106. Article 106 reads: "Whoever commits the crime as prescribed in Article 103, 104 or 105 of this Chapter in collusion with any organ, organization or individual outside the territory of China shall be given a heavier punishment according to the provisions stipulated in these Articles respectively." This source said, the so-called "collusion with any organ, organization or individual outside the territory of China" of Zheng Yichun is linked to the fact that Zheng Yichun published at "Epoch Times", "ChinaEWeekly", "Boxun" and other internet websites. Because he published articles at those websites, the government concluded that he must have been in collusion with the organizations that run those website. According to this logic, the Chinese government believes a connection must be a collusion. The famous free-lance writer, poet Zheng Yichun was secretly taken away by Yingkou police, Liaoning province on December 3, 2004 and was put into a room at Jiaohe Hotel under residential surveillance. About 2 weeks later, on December 20, he was transfered to No 1. Detention Center of Panjin city, Liaoning province. His family members were not formally noticed until December 31. The government charged Zheng Yichun of "subversion" and arrested him. It is said that the initial reason Zheng Yichun was taken away was because he exercised Falun Gong. Later, the police searched his residence and sealed his room. Meanwhile, they took away his computer and other equipments. The police collected more than 600 articles that he wrote or published and identified 63 of them as evidence of criminal activities.

IFLA calls on the Chinese government to end censorship of Internet access and allow freedom of expression online Media release 13 July 2005 The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions(IFLA) Committee on Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression(IFLA/FAIFE) expresses its deep concern over the state of freedom ofaccess to information on the Internet in China. (boxun.com)
At a time when China is becoming more and more significant on the worldstage in terms of trade and technological development, the increasingcurtailment of the freedom of its citizens to access the information theychoose is deeply disturbing. In addition to their continuing use oftechnological restrictions, the Chinese authorities are tightening controlof the Internet, through measures against bloggers and website operators. This is an attempt not merely to silence and punish critics of thegovernment, but also to prevent citizens' general interaction in theonline public sphere, says the Chair of the IFLA/FAIFE Committee ProfessorPaul Sturges. IFLA urges rethink The elimination of freedom of access to information and freedom ofexpression will deeply affect the development of a country and its people. Those with influence in China must demonstrate their commitment to fullparticipation in the information and knowledge society. This means toactively work for the provision of unrestricted access to information inaccordance with Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration ofHuman Rights.

Users of the MSN Spaces section of Microsoft Corporation's new China-based web portal get a scolding message each time they input words deemed taboo by the communist authorities - such as democracy, freedom and human rights. "Prohibited language in text, please delete," the message says. However, the restrictions appear to apply only to the subject line of such entries. Annoy the Chinese Government
H ow do you make the government of the world's most important rising power quake in fear? You hold a few signs, pass out brochures and engage in peaceful street theater half a world away.
Falun Gong is a form of an ancient Chinese practice of breathing exercises, with elements of Eastern religion and some downright bizarre beliefs tossed in. It shouldn't be the least bit threatening to a rational government, but Beijing has a Communist dictatorship's traditional distrust of any organization outside the control of the government. It is still on edge from a peaceful demonstration in 1999 that had 10,000 Falun Gong demonstrators suddenly show up one day outside the compound in Beijing where the Communist leaders live. A five-year-long crackdown on what the government invariably labels "an evil cult" has seen practitioners killed, tortured, and sent to labor camps. The latest protests, with a particular focus on New York City, are an attempt to remind people of what's happening in China. "We focused on New York because it's the media center of the world," says Falun Gong's unofficial spokesman here, Gail Rachlin. The seemingly ubiquitous demonstrations are like Falun Gong itself, earnest and a little strange, often featuring someone sitting in a small cage or in chains, dabbed with fake blood to reenact the torture faced by practitioners in China.
