Top of Page China is a very diverse land including deserts, mountains and fertile river basins. Much of western China is mountains with the Himalaya, Tian and Pamir ranges. Western China also has a large desert. Central China consists of mountainous regions. Rivers also play a major role in China, both for transportation and for irrigation. Much of the northern wheat fields and southern rice fields are irrigated from rivers. The Great Wall of China was built over 2,500 years ago to protect against invaders from the north. Troops would patrol the wall to defend China against attack. Once over 6,000 miles long, the wall is now about 3,750 miles long.

I-Forum hotel near the railroad station, Shenzen Anyone who tries to teach the geography of China faces the dilemma of either being very general (almost superficial) or delving into so many aspects and details as to be unable to complete the task in a single semester. How does one integrate three thousand years of history, language, local cultural practices, diets, architecture, et al. with basic physical geographies and economics that range from subsistence farming and herding to sophisticated electronics and computer industries, cities like Shanghai or Shenzhen? To provide a sense of China’s diversity and its rich cultural fabric, one should probably divide the political unit into its natural parts, parts that are distinct both physically as well as culturally. Many of these "parts" have had a distinct cultural and political history as ancient kingdoms or states. Examples would include the ancient states of Shu and Ba in modern Sichuan, or of Nanzhao in modern Yunnan. In fact, each of the geographic regions discussed below at one time contained a distinct and separate culture, which over time have become melded into what is modern China. Still, these regions remain distinct in many respects. But, one also should demonstrate the many ways in which China has been "united" and how many of its canals and rivers have been evolved and used to "unite" these many parts.

The eastern half of the country, its seacoast fringed with offshore islands , is a region of fertile lowlands, foothills and mountains, desert steppes , and subtropical areas. The western half of China is a region of sunken basins , rolling plateaus , and towering massifs , including a portion of the highest tableland on earth. The vastness of the country and the barrenness of the western hinterland have important implications for defense strategy. In spite of many good harbors along the approximately 18,000-kilometer coastline, the nation has traditionally oriented itself not toward the sea but inland, developing as an imperial power whose center lay in the middle and lower reaches of the

Geography - China View China from Space 1999 Original Picture from National Geographic Society China is one of the biggest countries in the world. It has an area of about 9.6 million square kilometers which comprises about 6.5 per cent of the world total land area. Its population of more than one billion accounts for 23 per cent of the world's population. China is the world's oldest continuous civilization. World Travel Organization predicts that by year 2020, China will become the number one travel destination in the world. China is situated in the eastern part of Asia on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest country in the world (after Canada and Russia). The distance from east to west measures over 5,200 kilometers and from north to south, over 5,500 kilometers. When the sun shines brightly over the Wusuli River in the east, the Pamire Plateau in the west is in the very early morning. When blizzards wrap the north along the Heilongjiang River in the winter, spring sowing is underway on Hainan Island in the south. China has a land border of 22,143.34 kilometers long and is bordered by twelve countries: Korea in the east; Russian in the northeast and the northwest; Mongolia in the north; India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Nepal in part of the west and southwest; Burma, Laos and Vietnam in the south.

Land as Varied as Her People

In land size alone, China is the fourth largest country in the world. For centuries, much of this mysterious nation was hidden from outsiders. But when traders and foreign adventurers explored within China's borders, they found mountains, high plateaus, deserts, plains, deltas, and hills that rivaled those of legends. China's second longest river, the Huang He, (Yellow River) rises in Qinghai province and flows some 5000 km to the Yellow Sea, slowing to create crystal clear lakes along its journey. Of course, the Chang Jiang (Yangzi or Yangtze River), China's longest river, is world-reknowned. As China's "main street," this artery courses over 6300 km, through China's most economically developed regions, where the Three Gorges Dam is located. A huge public works project - the largest dam in the world - the Three Gorges Dam project rivals the Grand Canal and Great Wall and is wrapped in environmental, engineering, and political controversy.
